Chapter 118 Connection
Just as Chen Yiran was about to make the call, her phone rang. To her surprise, it was Ted calling.
"Boss, we've been back for several days now. Have you found any work for us?"
Chen Yiran was surprised: "You're so good at predicting things! I actually have something for you guys to do, I was just about to make a call."
"Okay, you tell me where to point and I'll shoot."
"Mingdao"
"Mingdao is already in such a bad situation lately, what do you want to do? Should we strike while the iron is hot and use legal action to torment them? Most of their annual subscribers won't renew their contracts, and their cash flow probably won't last more than a few years. With the lawsuits, they could easily collapse. Or should we take advantage of their current weakness and low price and just acquire them?"
"No, I want to license DeepFlow to them and I want 10% of their revenue."
"Okay, that shouldn't be difficult. Icahn cleared out his entire portfolio last week, and the company is on the verge of collapse. If you offer them an olive branch now, they won't refuse."
"Okay, get the general contract sorted out as soon as possible, then help me get things done over there."
Ted coughed for a moment before explaining the purpose of the call: "Okay, leave it to me. Actually, I called today because of something else. You see, your company now has over six hundred people. So many users worldwide, right? Daily contract reviews, IP protection, employee agreements—it's all very troublesome."
Chen Yiran was furious: "Seriously?! I've been patronizing your law firm every day lately, and you're going to raise your prices again?"
"No, no, the price definitely won't go up. What I mean is, your company also needs its own legal staff, which can help share our workload. You know, we charge by the hour, and it's very expensive. It's much more suitable for you to hire your own legal counsel. Besides, even if a large company doesn't have a large legal team, it still needs at least one basic one."
"Ted, something's not right with you. You'd bring up something that's affecting your firm's business? Tell me, what's your scheme?"
Ted, true to his seasoned litigator nature, immediately adopted a pitiful tone: "How could there be a conspiracy! I'm really doing this for your own good! I'm just thinking about when you'll reach a market capitalization of 2 trillion US dollars, and then quickly give me some shares."
"No, I won't look for another firm. I'll just use your firm. I'm used to it anyway."
Ted paused for a few seconds, then sighed and said, "Sigh, my son has had a tough time. He studied hard for many years and finally passed the California bar exam, an exam that only half of the people can pass. My son passed it on his first try."
I had planned to find him a decent company after so many years in the industry, preferably a promising young company that had already made a name for itself. Good compensation would be even better. But to my surprise, the very first person I contacted rejected me.
"Are you sure his skill level is acceptable?"
"Trust me, there won't be any problem. He's been exposed to music by me since he was little, so his skills are pretty good."
"Okay, then let him work for our company next year. As for Mingdao's matter, get it done for me as soon as possible."
"Don't worry, I'll get there as fast as I can."
Chen Yiran completely forgot about Ming Dao's trivial matter.
Two days later, Chen Yiran participated in a television program for the first time in her life.
Although it was just a remote connection, and only lasted for a short ten minutes.
However, CNBC's "Squawk Box," which airs from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. every day, is the most influential morning program in the American financial world.
Every Wall Street trader watches it before the market opens, and Chen Yiran was, of course, featured on the program before.
The main reason the production team contacted Chen Yiran this time was because of Icahn's departure from the show a few days ago.
As a regular on the show, Icahn gave a live interview yesterday, confidently stating that this was just an experiment. He didn't put much effort into it, and the final losses were minimal. He then began criticizing Chen Yiran, saying that while she understands the technology, she doesn't understand business, and so on.
I contacted Chen Yiran today to see if she would retaliate in any way.
Chen Yiran's interview was scheduled for 8:30, which was the last segment before the Wall Street market opened. The host was Joe Kernen, who had worked at CNBC for over a decade and had a close relationship with Icahn, but he wouldn't take Icahn's side. It was also his decision to interview Chen Yiran to make fun of Icahn.
Chen Yiran didn't choose to connect from the study, feeling that would make him seem a bit bookish. He took his laptop and sat down in the yard.
At 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, the countdown on the laptop screen finished, and Joe Kernen's face appeared on the screen.
"Welcome back. Today our guest is Chen Yiran, the founder and CEO of FlowEDA. At nineteen, he is Silicon Valley's youngest entrepreneur. Last year, he sold his first software product and then facilitated the $2 billion acquisition of Cadbury before Christmas. Chen Yiran, thank you for joining us on the show."
"Thank you, Joe. Although I don't quite understand why a financial program would contact me, I feel that I still make a living through my skills. But I'm very happy to be on TV for the first time. It's only a little past 5 a.m. Pacific Time, and I got up to connect."
Joe chuckled: "Okay, thanks for your support. We certainly know you're known for your technical skills, and your skills have really cost Icahn dearly. He mentioned you on this show, and do you know what he said?"
"I've heard some of that. He said I'm a kid who doesn't understand business. All I know is how to write code, and I don't know whether the money I make is due to luck or skill."
"That's roughly the idea. Do you want to respond?"
"I think Mr. Icahn may have forgotten one thing: none of the companies in Silicon Valley started out with capital. Intel relied on integrated circuit patents, Apple relied on personal computer design, and Google relied on PageRank. Capital has always been an aid, not the core, on this street."
If technology doesn't triumph over capital, it's not that technology is useless, it's that the technology isn't good enough. I don't know about other companies in the world, but Silicon Valley's development absolutely relies on the gathering of technical talent; venture capital and the like are just additional advantages.
"So you think your skills are enough? You can ignore the pressure from capital?"
"That's enough. This is a financial program, and I don't want to use a lot of technical jargon. You just need to know that my technology is unique. Someone like Icahn might succeed in other industries, but in Silicon Valley, in the face of absolute technology, he's nothing."
"What you're making seems a bit out of reach for us, so is it possible for ordinary consumers to come into contact with your products? Do you have any plans for that?"
"I do have a lot of great ideas, but I'm too lazy to do most of them; it's too time-consuming."
"Why not do it?"
"Because that would force me to contend with capital and various sales channels, which I find too troublesome. So I'll create my own versions of some of my good ideas for fun, but I have no plans to enter the consumer market. Come on, let me show you some of the little things I made last year. Xiaoju! Give me an iced cola."
After a commotion, a drone flew over, carrying a small basket with a glass of iced cola on it.
Joe was a little stunned: "Are you sure this wasn't prepared in advance by you?"
Chen Yiran simply took her laptop to the kitchen: "Look, next to this small refrigerator, I set up a magnetic device that can open and close automatically. Then, this mechanical shelf will grab the cola and put it into this small drone."
This little drone is one I made myself. Some of its components use MakerBot's 3D printer. Although their technology is still immature—you can see the edges are quite rough—I believe they will improve it in the future.
"This is what you meant by 'making it for fun'?"
Chen Yiran said with a smile, "You can't actually see the real technology there. The robotic arm and the drone can use cameras to identify the location and accurately take out the Coke and deliver it to my location. That's my technology."
I'm pretty sure that even in five or ten years, it's unlikely anyone will be able to match my current technology. But for civilian use, it's too complicated. So, I'm too lazy to do it.
Let's talk about something closer to home. Getting a Coke like that is too cumbersome. A unified platform for simple air conditioning, lighting, including garage doors and security systems—we should have more products like that soon. Although it certainly won't be as good as what I have at home.
As Chen Yiran spoke, he pointed to several lights, which then began to turn on and off, and even adjust their brightness, following his finger.
After that, Chen Yiran began to show off a large number of gadgets he had made at home, which he had made out of boredom, and of course, they all had some security effects.
The production team was very interested in these things and ultimately extended the visit by ten minutes.
Chen Yiran felt that he performed quite well this time, and maybe he could compete with Musk for the Iron Man position in the future.
As Chen Yiran pondered this, he began preparing. He was going to Emily's party that evening, and he planned to bring her some handmade trinkets. Just in case Emily suddenly became erect again someday.
At 5 p.m., Chen Yiran took Pidan and prepared to leave for the party.
Before he even left home, he received a call from Chiang Shang-yi, who brought him some incredibly good news.
