Amit stood in the garage for about two minutes longer before remembering he was still carrying the cake. He turned off the Camry, opened the small door leading from the garage to the living room, and placed the cake box on the kitchen counter.

Priya sat on the sofa with Kabir in her arms, while the TV was showing "The Genius Doctor".

Kabir staggered to his feet and said happily, "Happy birthday, Dad! I was going to wait for you to get up this morning, but I was too sleepy and fell asleep."

"It's okay, Dad doesn't really like celebrating birthdays either. Come on, let's have some cake."

Priya began serving dinner, smiling as she said, "I didn't make rice pudding for you today, otherwise dinner would be too sweet. I'll make it for you tomorrow, so it's like you have two birthdays in one year, which isn't bad, right?"

"That's fine. Kabir loves cake, so let him have some today."

The family of three chatted and ate. Although Amit tried his best to hide his emotions, Priya noticed that something was wrong with him. However, she didn't say anything, assuming that it was his birthday and that Amit was letting off some steam because he was under too much pressure.

She had a job back then; she was a nursing graduate and earned a decent salary. Five years ago, when Kabir was born, they were a promising family with an annual income of over 5.

However, after Kabir fell ill, she had to quit her job to stay home and take care of her children. The family income decreased by a third, medical expenses rose, the plan to buy a house was out of the question, and they began to intentionally lower the quality of their food, clothing, and other necessities.

After watching TV for a while, the two of them, as usual, massaged Kabir and coaxed him to sleep before going back to their room to sleep.

Exhausted from the day, Amit forced himself not to think about the red-haired monster's words and quickly fell into a deep sleep. But in the middle of the night, Kabir had another problem and started vomiting.

Amit wanted to go and take care of her, but Priya stopped him.

"Go to sleep, you have to go to work tomorrow. I know you're tired, but that's our child, Amit, we can only persevere."

Amit lay in bed, but couldn't fall asleep.

The red-haired weirdo offered him very good terms to do something that would betray the company.

First, at this quarter's customer technology handover meeting, we left a bug in the optimization module that wouldn't be blocked by automatic testing. It doesn't need to be big; it just needs to affect the timing a little.

Then, some signal delays are introduced into the data exchanged with specific clients.

Finally, and even more ruthlessly, they directly sabotaged the underlying data chain during the company's operations.

The offer was five million US dollars, which would be deposited directly into his wife's account in India. More importantly, they could use their connections to get his son included in the clinical trial pool for the new drug tocilizumab.

Amit knew that the other side must be people from NewThink, and only people from NewThink would have such a need to cause trouble.

To be honest, Amit thought the other side was incredibly stupid.

He actually thought these conditions could buy his future. Doing these things will definitely land him in prison. He doesn't know exactly how long, but the economic losses he caused certainly won't be short.

Five million US dollars is a number that ordinary people may never be able to reach in their lifetime, but it is worth risking their lives for.

However, for the Amit industry, this number is not astronomical. Even with average skills, one can earn that much in twenty years.

If you have good skills, you'll have a chance in about fifteen years. If you have some other opportunities, it's possible to earn money in five or ten years.

He just happened to have encountered an opportunity. FlowEDA's future is incredibly bright. As the company's earliest employee, employee number 004, he is confident that he can earn this money within ten years.

The case of tocilizumab further proves that the other party didn't actually do much work; they were just making assumptions.

Indeed, the drug resistance of Kabir is becoming more and more serious, the previous preparations are becoming less and less effective, and he is also experiencing intermittent fever and vomiting.

But tocilizumab can also develop resistance, so what's the point of adding it to the list? Does he really have to go to jail just to be able to use it a year or two earlier?

This is simply not worthwhile. What if a new drug comes along this time? What if tocilizumab becomes ineffective, and then another experimental drug is developed? When he's in prison, who will be able to help Kabir obtain the new drug?

Moreover, Chen Yiran is indeed a good boss. He pays very generously and offers excellent benefits. The only time Kabir ever went on a long trip was for a company team-building event.

And that miraculous technology made him feel that if he followed Chen Yiran, he might be able to earn five million in five years.

Another thing that prevented Amit from doing anything foolish was that Chen Yiran was notoriously vengeful. For the past few months, Silicon Valley has been abuzz with rumors about Chen Yiran and TSMC.

For such a trivial matter, TSMC is now begging for cooperation. And so, the contract finally signed a few days ago won't be fulfilled for another six months. Chen Yiran's reason was that he didn't want to disappoint Samsung and GlobalFoundries, who initially supported him.

Amit felt that even if the money was transferred to India, Chen Yiran would still go to India to recruit people to file lawsuits, and he was unsure whether his wife and children could really get the money safely.

But even though his reason told him he absolutely couldn't do it, he couldn't help but think that if he did it, he could go to prison without worry and not think about anything anymore.

He was truly exhausted. For the past three years, he had had almost no entertainment. His life revolved solely around home, the company, and the hospital. He was constantly calculating medical expenses, living expenses, and watching his savings dwindle.

Last June, when he went to watch an NBA game, it was not only the first time that Kabir went out to play, but also the only time he had traveled in three years.

Why not just do it? I'll gamble that the boss is kind-hearted and won't make things difficult for his wife and kids.

And even if something really goes wrong, it has nothing to do with him anymore. He has already done his best. He even went to jail to earn money for his son's medical treatment. What else can he do? These things will no longer be his responsibility.

In the following days, Amit went to work as usual and began to pay attention to the negotiations between the company and Synaptics. The newcomer, Wang Zhiwu, was an outsider with no sense of confidentiality and told Amit almost everything about the progress of the negotiations.

He knew that it would be difficult for the two sides to reach an agreement, and that in a few days, Xinsi might ask him to start taking action.

Chen Yiran hasn't been to the company lately either; it seems she's on vacation again. The boss is a god, but clearly a rather lazy one.

Many tasks assigned to him, things that the boss could finish in minutes, might take him several hours.

However, this also has its advantages: if you ultimately decide to do something bad, it's best to do it when the boss isn't around.

Two days later, the red-haired weirdo came again. He handed over a USB drive and said, "You can take a look first. This is a strategy we came up with using speculative data. Of course, since you're a professional, you can modify it yourself."

Our goal is singular: to slow them down, make them stagnate, or at least reduce their pace.

Amit paused for a few seconds, then took the phone and asked, "Don't you need to create some kind of Trojan horse? Also, if you just stand still, it will be very difficult for you to catch up. Without getting the Deepflow license, you have no chance."

"We will get the license, but not the best terms. We still can't compete with Chen Yiran's technology. So we need you to help us stall them. We don't need to match Chen Yiran's technology completely, just something close enough. As long as we can survive by lowering the price, that's fine."

"Where's the money? Where's my son's medicine?"

"You definitely have to work first. After all, we've given you the money to secure a spot for your child. If you turn your back on us and refuse to work, there's nothing we can do."

But you have to do it first. If things turn sour, you can just call the police. Of course, I have to remind you, once you take the money, you can't back out and call the police, otherwise the money will be considered stolen money and will be recovered.

Amit nodded silently.

Silicon Valley tech companies always organize all sorts of events to cater to the culture of geeks or nerds.

FlowEDA is no exception; April Fool's Day is the company's dress code day. This was learned from other companies, though it's unclear which company came up with the idea. Normally, no one in Silicon Valley wears suits; everyone wears casual attire year-round.

On April Fool's Day, everyone dressed in suits and ties became the amusing thing.

When Amit arrived at the company, he found that his chair was gone, and a yoga ball was placed there instead.

Looking around, everything else was a mess. Some seats were wrapped in tin foil, the meeting room was filled with balloons, and some people's keycaps had been ripped off and rearranged.

Amit smiled and walked toward the front desk. As she passed the coffee corner, she noticed a sign that said only decaffeinated coffee was available today.

When Catherine, the receptionist, saw him, she smiled and said, "If you can't work, you can't work. The boss said April Fool's Day is for fun. We'll just have some activities later. Anyway, today and tomorrow are a holiday."

"Is the boss coming today?"

"I don't know. He told me this morning that he was coming today, so how would I know if he's actually coming or not?"

Amit walked out of the company with a sigh, pondered for a while in a corner, and then called Chen Yiran.

"Hey, boss, I have something very important to tell you."
