Reborn in 2010, the AI in my mind is too powerful.
Chapter 149 A tremendous temptation
That evening, Nuno and his driver Roberto took Chen Yiran to Jobs' home in Palo Alto.
The area was eerily quiet, surrounded by old houses and very lush trees.
Steve Jobs' house didn't look particularly luxurious from the outside; it was in the English Tudor style, with red brick walls, pointed roofs, and ivy climbing halfway up the walls. In contrast, Chen Yiran's current residence appeared much more understated.
Chen Yiran told Nuno and Roberto to wait in the car, then got out and rang the doorbell.
The door was opened by Steve Jobs' wife, Laurene, who smiled and said, "The future leader of robots has arrived."
Chen Yiran smiled and nodded, saying, "I'm just trying to fool the robots; I'm actually on the human side."
Steve Jobs' three children, who were standing nearby, laughed when they heard this, and then came over one by one to greet him.
Laurene gestured for him to enter and said, "Mr. Chen, Steve is in the restaurant. Come with me. Let's eat first, and then you can talk business."
The layout of the house is not much different from that of a traditional American family home, and the walls of the staircase are covered with photos.
The restaurant was dimly lit. Jobs sat at one end of a long table, wearing a dark blue turtleneck with very loose cuffs. Even without any professional knowledge, it was clear that he was in poor health because he was too thin.
Jobs smiled at Chen Yiran and said, "Sit down, let's eat first. I had no choice but to invite you to dinner; my current health condition doesn't allow me to go out casually."
The food was simple: steak, roasted vegetables, brown rice, and salad.
It looks simple, but the taste is really good. The high-quality steak paired with asparagus suits Chen Yiran's taste perfectly. The only drawback is that there is no A1 steak sauce here, but a more advanced steak sauce made by the chef.
But Chen Yiran is a wild boar; he still thinks the most common A1 steak sauce tastes better.
Jobs didn't bring up any serious matters at the dinner table and basically didn't say a word.
On the contrary, his children were very curious about Chen Yiran and kept asking him questions.
Jobs' son, Reed, is particularly concerned about whether the future development of AI can promote the development of medicine.
He was a medical student at Stanford University. As the son of a billionaire, his reasons for choosing his major were no different from those of many medical students: because Steve Jobs was sick, he wanted to study how to treat cancer.
The second daughter, Eileen, was concerned about when Doubao would be able to help her write her thesis, as she felt that university was too difficult.
Eve, the 13-year-old daughter, thought her sister was wrong. She said that middle school was already difficult enough, and she earnestly asked Chen Yiran if she could blow up the school first if she really led a robot rebellion.
Laurena, who hadn't lost her temper because of the guests, couldn't hold back any longer. She coughed and began her motherly nagging, harshly criticizing her two daughters for not studying properly.
The atmosphere at dinner was generally pleasant. After the meal, Jobs stood up, leaning on the back of his chair, and led Chen Yiran to the study.
It was another old-fashioned study room. Chen Yiran felt that Jobs' home really lacked any sense of science fiction, which was completely different from the impression Jobs gave to the outside world.
Jobs sat down in an old dark green leather chair, and Chen Yiran sat on the sofa opposite him.
Chen Yiran spoke first: "Why didn't Cook just come and talk to me directly? I didn't expect you to come. Your health doesn't look very good."
He had actually asked Jasmine before and learned the exact time of Steve Jobs' death. In his previous life, he had seen the official obituary on Apple's iTunes.
Jobs said helplessly, "Kid, your style has scared Cook and the others. They're afraid that if they accidentally say the wrong thing while talking to you, there will be bad consequences. After all, Apple seems very strong now, but in reality, its foundation is very unstable."
So they sent me here. Anyway, if I say something wrong now, no one can blame me, I'm about to die.
Sigh, I wasn't a good father. You didn't see my eldest daughter today; she's an editor in New York. I was only twenty-three when she was born. I wasn't a good father then; I was immature and paranoid. I even said in court that she wasn't my daughter and that I was infertile.
But I actually knew she was my daughter. Back in 83, I named Apple's new computer after her. Thankfully, although this illness will take my life, it has given me enough time to make up for these regrets in the final days of my life.
Chen Yiran didn't understand what Steve Jobs meant by saying this, so he simply didn't respond and waited for Jobs to get to the point.
"Okay, dying people love to tell their stories to others, I hope you don't mind. But I don't think you're really like the rumors suggest, I think it's all an act."
Chen Yiran was silent for a few seconds, then asked curiously, "What's the reason? We've never met, how did you determine that it was me in disguise?"
"Okay, actually it wasn't my judgment. You should know Larry Ellison, right? He's been my friend for thirty years. We used to be neighbors. My girlfriend at the time was a rich girl, and my birthday present was a peacock. That peacock ran into Ellison's house and he almost killed it. What a pity."
In short, our relationship has remained good ever since. You know Oracle started suing Google over Java last year, right? That was really helping me get revenge; everyone knows how much I hate Android.
In short, Ellison is a good person and a smart person. He judged that you are different from him; he is genuinely eccentric, while you are faking it.
Feeling exposed, Chen Yiran decided to deny it to the death: "No, I really do have quirks, just like you. Don't they say you have OCD?"
"Haha, I don't think I am, but everyone says I am. Ellison even told me it's the biggest factor in my success. Okay, let's get down to business. From your entrepreneurial path, it seems you don't really like entering the consumer market?"
Chen Yiran thought for a moment and then answered, "Yes, I prefer pure technological dominance to entering the consumer market. Because there are too many troublesome things. Take Doubao for example. If I directly target the market, there will inevitably be some issues regarding the boundaries of AI usage."
Although the effects are not yet obvious given the current hardware infrastructure, I am quite certain that future AI will be driven by humans to do all sorts of things, some good and some bad, such as hacking into other people's networks or systematic fraud.
Personally, I believe that ten years from now, the internet will be flooded with purely AI videos that are indistinguishable to the average person. Criminals could easily use AI to commit all sorts of crimes, which carries moral and even legal risks, and is simply too much of a hassle for me.
"Licensing Doubao to others will solve this problem. The final boundaries are set by you anyway; I can just collect licensing fees annually and continue my technological advancements."
Steve Jobs nodded. "I had a pretty good idea of what was going on. Cook and the others didn't really want to embed Doubao into the Apple system; they wanted users to use Doubao on their iPhones as an app. But I don't think you'd agree because you don't want to directly engage with users. Okay, if it's a license, I believe you won't object to Apple. Name your price."
"It's not expensive, just a $5 buyout license fee per phone. For projects involving user servers, you can set your own prices; I'll take 30% of the sales revenue."
Jobs fell silent, this time for quite a while, before resuming his story.
"When I returned to Apple in 1997, we only had enough cash on hand to last another quarter. Now we have nearly $70 billion in cash. Our market capitalization is already climbing toward becoming number one in the world."
The first time I left Apple was when I was ousted by the board of directors, so when I came back I paid close attention to controlling the board, and now the board is full of my people.
I personally promoted Cook, and Bill Campbell has been with me for seventeen years. He witnessed Apple's rebirth firsthand, and he won't vote against it. Al Gore was a close friend of mine when he was vice president, and his vote is my vote.
Art Levinson is my designated successor as chairman, and he will carry out all my ideas. Bob Iger of Disney, given my position at Disney, is unlikely to oppose me.
As for the major shareholders, Fidelity and Vanguard will definitely not cause trouble. They've made enough money with me, and they'll trust my judgment.
Chen Yiran was getting impatient: "So, what exactly do you want to do? I don't need to know about Apple's internal affairs. You don't want to drag me into Apple, do you?"
Steve Jobs nodded and said, "I'm going to get you, even if I only have a few months to live. My word is still Apple's absolute command. I will definitely meet the conditions I set for you."
I do want to bring you into Apple, with your FlowEDA plus DeepFlow's patents, plus yourself.
"I'll offer you $30 billion in cash, plus the same stock options I received when I returned to Apple in 1997. Would you be willing to come to Apple?"
Chen Yiran concealed the shock on his face, his mind filled with the echoes of 30 billion US dollars.
