Chapter 195 Ultron's Beginning
Mid-December in Silicon Valley wasn't cold. Sunlight streamed through the palm trees lining Highway 101 and onto the car roof. Chen Yiran rode in a black Escalade south from Palo Alto for about thirty minutes, arriving at a detached house near Cupertino.
The house is located on a quiet street called Kensington Road, lined with detached houses of similar size on both sides. It has red tiled roofs, beige exterior walls, a lawn in the front yard, and a driveway that can park two cars.
To the left of the main entrance is the living room, with a high ceiling reaching the roof, a gas fireplace, and light oak composite flooring. To the right is the open-plan kitchen.
The hallway leads to a bedroom, and opposite is a garage that can also hold two cars. Many families use the garage as a storage room and park their cars directly in the driveway.
The second floor has three bedrooms: two smaller ones sharing a bathroom, a larger master bedroom, a walk-in closet, and a large ensuite bathroom.
The backyard isn't big, but it's not small either, about a hundred square meters. Half of it is paved with stone slabs, while the other half is overgrown with weeds.
This is a typical American middle-class detached house, and the neighborhood is also a typical American middle-class neighborhood, nothing special. But right now, the main personnel of Aochuang Technology are all in the house, waiting for Chen Yiran's arrival.
This ordinary middle-class detached villa is not used as an office, but as a show flat.
When Chen Yiran entered, looking at the room full of people, he first laughed and joked, "Holding a meeting in the living room is weird. How about we go to the garage? I've never experienced starting a business in a garage before."
The engineers smiled shyly, and James Costello, the operations director sent by Bain, stood up and said, "I agree, and to be honest, I'd like to try it out myself."
Christina, the person in charge at Apple and also the chief technology officer at Altron, stood up immediately: "Let's go, let's go to the garage. There seems to be a blackboard in the garage that the previous owner didn't take. We can use it."
Upon arriving at the garage, Chen Yiran looked at the nine people below. James Costello, who was there specifically to coordinate the business arrangements, was now consciously positioned on the outermost perimeter.
The other eight people were all engineers who came from Apple. Christina was the hardware integration lead for the iPod project, and the others were all very experienced designers and integrators.
Chen Yiran took out his phone and shared a file with the project team, then began to explain: "Now that everyone's here, I'll get straight to the goal. First, our timeline is the Apple spring launch event in March. We'll build everything that moves in this building ourselves."
First, we need to define our own proprietary communication protocol, called AoChuang Connect, which runs on the 2.4GHz open frequency band and uses low-power radio frequency. I will send you this protocol; the underlying frame structure, device pairing sequence, AES encrypted handshake, and packet loss retransmission strategy are all readily available.
Once the system is online, we will make the communication specifications and authentication process of this protocol public so that third parties can perform compatibility authentication.
Remember, our company's core goal is to set an example. We will produce the best hardware, but some people will definitely find it too expensive and buy third-party compatible products. That's fine; we will earn enough profit from the agreement.
Let me now explain my initial requirements, which are not difficult to put into words.
Lights. Replace all the light bulbs in the house with our own E26 screw-in bulb sockets, which use the Aotron protocol for signal transmission and reception. The bulbs should be controllable via mobile phones, allowing individual adjustment of brightness and color temperature.
Air conditioning. We replaced the thermostat with our own and connected it to the building's HVAC control panel. We set the temperature on our phones and let it turn on and off automatically according to our schedule.
Doorbell. Install a doorbell with a camera and microphone outside the door. When someone rings the bell, the image is displayed on your phone, allowing you to talk to the person at the door.
Indoor cameras. Four wide-angle cameras: one on the living room ceiling, one in the upper left corner of the kitchen, one in the hallway outside the master bedroom, and one in the porch outside the back door. The footage will be transmitted via Wi-Fi to a mobile phone, and video calls are also needed for easy communication with pets.
The camera needs to have anti-theft and identification functions; I will license this technology to the company later.
Robotic vacuum cleaners should also be integrated, and they should be able to define designated areas and charge themselves.
The curtains, living room floor-to-ceiling windows, and master bedroom windows were replaced with two sets of electric tracks, featuring low-noise tubular motors and receiver modules with the Aotron protocol, allowing for timed opening and closing.
We also need to make a few pet feeders, preferably with cameras installed. Pet-related money is the easiest to make; it'll be great if those people can watch their dogs come to eat while they're at work. Lots of people will definitely buy them. Now, if you have any questions, ask away.
An engineer in a plaid shirt raised his hand and asked, "I have no problem with the protocol layer; adaptation isn't difficult. But how do we handle latency and frame drops from the gateway to the mobile application?"
"I have enough technology. A Chinese company has a dragon-shaped front end. I use it to run inference on the local gateway. The camera image is compressed after being labeled by inference before being pushed to the mobile phone."
Instead of pushing the raw stream, we push the labeled image, reducing the transmission volume by half. Hardware encoding and decoding runs on the gateway, compressing all four streams simultaneously. I also have this part readily available for you.
Christina raised her hand and asked, "What about the manufacturing cycle? Can we design it and still manufacture it in time? For each item, from mold making to manufacturing, we need to find a surface mount production line in advance."
"Have confidence in China's manufacturing industry. I have companies that can directly handle the manufacturing of most of the products. For other products that need to be manufactured, we can go to Shenzhen. As long as the money is in place, we can expedite the process."
After some discussion, Chen Yiran wrote March 10th in big letters on the blackboard and said loudly, "The date is here. I want to see a rough finished product by February!"
To be honest, these aren't particularly difficult things in themselves. I've given you all the parts that require some effort. All you have to do is perfectly integrate and optimize them!
"Ultron pays me licensing fees every year! As long as you guys do a good job, I'll share that money as bonuses! I've really made enough money; I collect so many licensing fees every year, I'm almost numb to it."
James Costello of Bain & Company looked a bit gloomy, as he had a feeling that they and Apple ultimately benefited Chen Yiran, with a significant portion of their profits going towards licensing fees.
But there's no way around it, the vision of this whole-house smart system is just too beautiful. Bain Capital is already imagining what it will look like when it goes public in a few years.
After giving the group a pep talk, Chen Yiran left with her bodyguards.
As he neared home, Chen Yiran stared at his phone; time was almost up, and he was waiting.
Yesterday, the carnivorous plant secretly obtained information from Google that Google was going to publish a paper.
Soon after, Chen Yiran saw Google's paper on arXiv: the Transformer developed by the Google Brain project team had been released.
