Chapter 220 A Net Worth of 510 Billion US Dollars
Just as the mobile phone market was in turmoil, with major players constantly negotiating, breaching contracts, and hurling insults at each other.
On March 16, 2012, Forbes magazine released its annual list of the world's billionaires.
This list, released annually in March, uses mid-February of the same year as the base date for net worth calculations and is the world's most closely watched wealth ranking list. This year's list includes a record 1226 people.
This year, one name has become the absolute protagonist of this year's rich list.
Chen Yiran, a 20-year-old Chinese tech tycoon, ranks third on the global rich list with a net worth of $51 billion.
This is second only to the Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim's $690 billion and Microsoft founder Bill Gates' $610 billion. Even Warren Buffett, the legendary investor, ranks behind this twenty-year-old with $440 billion.
This isn't the first time Chen Yiran has been on the list. He appeared on last year's Forbes list.
In 2011, Forbes included Chen Yiran in its global rich list for the first time. At that time, his main asset was his shares in FlowEDA. Because it was not a publicly traded company, Forbes valued FlowEDA based on the valuations of the three major EDA companies previously listed, setting his net worth at $30 billion.
This figure is already astonishing enough, allowing Chen Yiran to break the record set by Zuckerberg in 2008. Zuckerberg was worth $15 billion when he first appeared on the list at the age of 23, while Chen Yiran was only 19 when he first appeared on the list, with a net worth more than double that of Zuckerberg at that time.
But compared to this year, $30 billion is nothing.
Within a year, Chen Yiran's net worth skyrocketed from 30 billion to 510 billion.
Many economists do not agree with this figure.
According to Forbes' statistical standards, the valuation of private companies is usually based on the most recent round of financing transactions with actual capital inflows and outflows. Chase's investment was indeed substantial, and the valuation of 1000 billion is justifiable. However, in its final calculation, Forbes referenced Bloomberg's valuation method for private companies, applying a certain discount to assets with lower liquidity.
Ultimately, Forbes valued Chen Yiran's stake in Aurora Group at around $480 billion, and combined with his personal assets in McLaren Group, Apple, and other investments, his total net worth was estimated at $510 billion.
Many economists believe that Forbes editors lacked the courage to rank a 20-year-old as the second most valuable person in the world. While they may not be able to reach the top spot, they believe that Chen Yiran's net worth is certainly at least second in the world.
Forbes explained this by including a feature article alongside the list, titled "Third Place in Twenty Years Old".
"Chen Yiran is rewriting the definition of the word 'billionaire.' Before him, no one under the age of thirty had ever appeared in the top ten of the global rich list. The previous record holder was Bill Gates, who was thirty-one years old when he first entered the top ten in 1987. Chen Yiran has brought that record forward by a full eleven years."
What's even more noteworthy is the composition of his wealth. Unlike most billionaires, Chen Yiran's net worth comes almost entirely from the technology companies he founded, rather than from inheritance or investment gains. Aurora Group possesses core technology patents in multiple fields such as chip design, EDA software, and AI, and is considered by the industry to be one of the world's most technologically advanced technology companies.
Chen Yiran is also the first Chinese citizen to enter the top ten of the global rich list. Previously, the highest-ranked Chinese person was Li Ka-shing of Hong Kong, with US$255 billion, ranking ninth.
There will certainly be controversy regarding Chen Yiran's net worth, since Aurora Group is not a publicly listed company, while JPMorgan Chase's valuation is as high as $100 billion. We usually adopt this valuation directly, as JPMorgan Chase is a large investment institution with sufficient credibility.
However, many of Aurora Group's technologies were too cutting-edge, including numerous applications of deep learning. We didn't have good quantification capabilities, so we could only make estimates based on the revenue figures presented at the time. We felt that this valuation was definitely overestimated in the short term.
So, in February, when the magazine was finalized, we set the price at $51 billion. You have to understand, that was before March, before the timeline-changing press conference, and before we knew Ultron's true power.
Forbes' press release essentially implied that they might have underestimated Chen Yiran's worth.
But that's no longer important; being the world's third richest person at the age of twenty is already impressive enough.
The list caused a global media frenzy after it was released.
CNN dedicated a full ten minutes to reporting on this in its evening news, with the anchors marveling at the vast differences between people.
The BBC produced a special feature, inviting three economists to discuss the Chen Yiran phenomenon.
One of them put it most bluntly: "This is not the story of a rich man; it is the story of an era. When a twenty-year-old can create such enormous value through technology, it shows that the logic of wealth distribution in the world is undergoing a fundamental change."
The New York Times headline was even more interesting: "The new king of Silicon Valley is not yet old enough to drink."
Foreign media began reporting on Chen Yiran's rise to wealth in all aspects, with some tabloids even sending people to stake out FlowEDA. Some of the bolder ones even prepared to sneak inside and take photos.
However, they chose the wrong place. When Chen Yiran only had eleven employees, he set the tone: the company's technology does not necessarily have to be the strongest, but its martial spirit must be abundant.
Under Chen Yiran's leadership, the company regularly conducts outdoor team building activities, delves into indoor close-quarters combat, and receives meticulous instruction from various professional veterans, engaging in interesting exercises.
Even the most entertaining team-building activities are high-intensity name tag ripping games.
After several paparazzi were identified by the camera, a few bolder employees, together with security guards, arrested them first and then called the police, even demonstrating a naked choke technique.
Of course, no matter how much international attention it receives, it's still not as exaggerated as in China.
A native-born Chinese man has truly become a world leader in core technologies and, as a result, the world's third richest man, all at the young age of twenty!
The Chinese media went into a frenzy that very day.
