Reborn in 2010, the AI in my mind is too powerful.
Chapter 232 Three Robots
To build advanced LEGO sets, you first need various advanced parts.
Yaskawa Electric Corporation Headquarters Technical Center, Kitakyushu, Japan.
Masashi Nakamura, the head of the design department at Yaskawa Technical Center, is leading a meeting.
The news of Aurora Group's acquisition of Yaskawa caused a sensation in the Japanese business world, with many companies feeling like they had won the lottery.
Servo motors were originally an open supply, and now, luckily, even the company has been sold.
Yaskawa knew that Chen Yiran would definitely get involved in the robotics industry, but they didn't expect it to happen so quickly.
Less than a week after the acquisition was completed, Yaskawa's technology center received an email from Silicon Valley.
The sender was Chen Yiran, the big boss of Aurora Group, and the attachment was a list of servo motor requirements.
Kobayashi, who was in charge of the motor design, frowned after glancing at it twice: "This specification of 50 Nm peak torque, and the maximum weight is listed as 800 grams? Including the motor and encoder?"
Nakamura nodded: "That is indeed a bit outrageous."
"Our 60mm frame Σ-V series weighs two kilograms and only outputs 0.5 Nm. Now, to achieve a peak power of 50 Nm and a weight of 800 grams, the power density needs to more than double. The existing neodymium iron boron magnet solution is nearing its limit, the rotor structure needs to be completely redesigned, and the stator windings may need to be replaced with flat wire technology."
This is equivalent to developing an entire series from scratch, and it requires a significant upgrade to existing processes.
Nakamura didn't reply, but continued to flip through the list. There were twelve specifications, ranging from 20 Nm to 120 Nm, each marked with continuous torque, maximum speed, weight limit, size limit, encoder accuracy, and communication protocol.
The parameters are described in great detail, including torque curves, inertia matching, and heat dissipation conditions.
Nakamura pointed to the second category and said, "These medium-sized ones are fine, ranging from 50 to 80 Newton-meters, with 14 specifications. It looks similar to our existing product line."
"Torque is not a problem; existing products can cover it. It's just that the control frequency requirement is 1 kilohertz, which is double that of the conventional one."
"What the driver can do, our Σ-V series can already run at 1000 Hz. The third type below is something we can't do."
Kobayashi lowered his gaze and was then shocked.
"Within 12 millimeters in diameter, within 30 millimeters in length, and a peak torque of 0.5 Nm, plus an encoder. This size is half the size of our smallest product, which has a 20-millimeter frame. To make it 12 millimeters, the magnetic circuit, windings, and bearings all have to be redesigned from scratch, and current encoders can't fit in there."
Nakamura said, "To my recollection, no one seems to have this kind of solution. Do you remember any places where I can order it from outside?"
Kobayashi shook his head: "There are only a handful of manufacturers worldwide that can make servo motors smaller than 12 millimeters. Maxon in Switzerland has small sizes, but the torque isn't high enough. Shinano Electric in Japan has micro stepper motors, but there's no ready-made solution for this size for servos."
Nakamura scratched his head: "Never mind, it's the boss's direct order, we'll just do it. Prioritize achieving the technological breakthrough, and we can work on the mass production technology later. I reckon we're not the only ones who received this order, and we're definitely not the only ones scratching our heads."
Nakamura was right. At the same time, Chen Yiran sent similar lists to many of his subsidiaries and project teams.
Shadow Robotics received a request from Dexterous Hands to simplify their existing technology, reducing the degree of freedom required, but retaining the fingertip tactile sensors.
Qingjing Robotics received a chassis modification request, requiring the addition of four-wheel independent steering function, while also adapting to Yaskawa's servo motor parameters.
Universal Robots received a request to adapt the collaborative arm to replace the torque motor of the UR5 with a Yaskawa servo motor.
Linac received a custom order for linear push rods, while Harmonic Drive received a request for fine-tuning of harmonic reducers, with backlash controlled to within 30 arcseconds.
KUKA received the mechanical structure design task, including the skeleton, joint shell, and wiring harness routing.
DJI received a request for a small drone mount module, while Uniview received the custom parameters for a camera module.
Even iRobot, which is still going through the handover process, has received the task of making Roomba's cleaning module into a standardized interface that can be mounted on a mobile chassis.
Each company received a complete specification sheet, with parameters accurate to torque, speed, weight, dimensions, and communication protocol.
These lists are for the three robot services that Chen Yiran and Jasmine designed together.
The first one is a four-legged mechanical dog.
Each leg has three joints: the hip, knee, and ankle. Each joint is powered by a Yaskawa servo motor paired with a Harmonic Drive reducer.
It has twelve drive systems, a target weight of 45 kilograms, and a dynamic load of up to 15 kilograms per leg.
It uses A123-specific lithium iron phosphate cells, with sixteen cells in series and nine in parallel, a nominal voltage of 51.2 volts, and a capacity of 20 amp-hours.
The back also features an expansion interface, allowing the attachment of DJI's small drones, or security modules such as stun guns, tear gas spray, and high-intensity flashlights.
The second type is a wheeled intelligent platform.
Using the Qingjing chassis, modify it to have four-wheel independent steering, supporting in-place rotation. Mount a Universal Robots UR5 collaborative arm (six degrees of freedom) on top, with a Shadow 16-degree-of-freedom dexterous hand at the end effector. This requires a significant number of servo motors, at least thirty.
It is positioned as a multi-functional service robot that can be used both indoors and outdoors. The technology is the most mature, and all modules are readily available and can be assembled and used immediately.
The third type is the humanoid robot that the public is quite obsessed with.
It has 25 degrees of freedom throughout its body, with six joints in each leg, five in each arm, two in the waist, and two in the neck.
The peak torque of the hip joint is 120 Nm and that of the knee joint is 90 Nm, which is more than twice that of a quadruped robot.
Dynamic balance during bipedal walking is much more difficult than that of quadrupedal walking. The moment of gait transition involves supporting the body on only one leg, resulting in a significantly greater impact torque on the joints. Humanoid designs require the highest motor power density, and whether Yaskawa can achieve that remains to be seen.
With the furthest reach, mass production is impossible in the short term, but Chen Yiran wants to build a prototype first to accumulate control experience for bipedal walking.
All three robots have some practical value, but their greatest value lies in their ability to accumulate a large amount of data.
Of course, he still needs to do one more thing: start optimizing the R&D process of his companies.
Without the help of AI, these R&D upgrades would be quite lengthy, and he would have to create a full-platform system for his subsidiaries to use.
