Chapter 268 Joe Biden, Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Delaware
Although Biden has made many embarrassing mistakes in his old age, he has brought a lot of joy to people all over the world.
Although this guy doesn't seem like a good person, his son is even more unconventional.
Although he appears to be a soft spot within the Democratic Party.
But Biden is actually very capable; he has a deep understanding of American politics.
Biden graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in history and political science. In 1968, he received a Juris Doctor degree from Syracuse University, ranking 76th out of 85 students.
However, he was a player with a strong mentality, and he passed the extremely rigorous bar exam in the United States back then.
He then returned to his home in Delaware and joined a law firm, where he began representing large corporations in lawsuits.
But the nationwide unrest following Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination and the subsequent patrols of the streets by the National Guard inspired him to become a public defender.
Biden’s clients are almost all African Americans from Wilmington’s East Side, and his flamboyant courtroom style often annoys judges and opposing lawyers.
Just two years later, he realized that studying law couldn't save America.
He entered politics, running for Newcastle County Councilman in Delaware in 1970, making a stunning debut in the political arena.
In a situation where most Democratic candidates in Delaware lost, he defeated a veteran Republican politician by a staggering 10,000 to 2,000 votes.
In 1972, Biden decided to go a step further and run for U.S. Senator from Delaware, where his opponent was incumbent Republican Senator James Caleb Boggs.
James Caleb Boggs is a two-term U.S. Representative, a two-term Governor of Delaware, and a two-term U.S. Senator.
Then-President Richard Nixon persuaded him to run for a third term to ensure the Republican Party retained a senator seat in Delaware.
At that time, the Democratic Party was practically non-existent in Delaware; they had even decided to abandon the state altogether and did not send anyone to challenge Boggs.
Only Biden, a young man with only two years of experience as a county councilor, was not afraid of losing face. He shouted, "It is our duty to rebuild the glory of the Democratic Party!" and then took his whole family on stage.
Biden didn't have many professional helpers; his main support came from his family. His sister Valerie was the campaign manager, his brother James was the finance chairman, and his brother Frank was the volunteer coordinator.
Biden initially had only 18% approval rating in Delaware, while Boggs had 93%.
But Biden has excellent oratory skills and can grasp important issues.
Ultimately, when Republican President Nixon won the Delaware presidential election by a landslide, Democrat Biden surprisingly defeated Bogues by 3162 votes and was elected Delaware Senator.
The U.S. Constitution stipulates that the minimum age for a U.S. Senator is 30. When Biden was elected, he was not even eligible and was only 29 years old. When he was sworn in, he was just over 30.
Just when everything was going well, his wife Nelia took their youngest daughter and two young sons out to buy a Christmas tree before Christmas that year. They were involved in a traffic accident and were hit by a truck. Nelia and her daughter Naomi died on the spot, and their two sons were also seriously injured.
Biden once contemplated suicide, though he ultimately abandoned the idea because of his two children, but he still had to resign.
To keep him in check, the Democrats forced a Senate resolution allowing Biden to be sworn in at his sons' hospital bedsides. They also promised him suitable jobs that would allow him to commute daily between Washington and Delaware.
Finally, at his son's bedside, with his deceased wife's father holding the Bible, Biden officially announced his inauguration.
Then he began his legendary career as a senator. From 1972 to 2008, he was re-elected six times, making him the longest-serving U.S. senator in Delaware history, winning more than 60% of the vote each time.
Prior to this, Delaware had always been considered a swing state, with Republicans winning far more often.
However, thanks to Biden's political maneuvering, Delaware became a Democratic stronghold after 1988.
Over the course of thirty years, the Republican Party sent out various talented individuals to challenge his position, all of whom were defeated by a huge margin.
In Delaware, no politician can threaten Biden, and if Biden were to form a People's Party in Delaware someday, the chances of success would be quite high.
In terms of actual political affairs, Biden is also very capable. Given the Democratic Party's long period of opposition after the 1980s, it suffers from a lack of diplomatic talent, and Biden is the only one it can truly rely on.
When Carter came to power, he frequently traveled between the United States and the Soviet Union as a special envoy, and mediated the Strategic Nuclear Weapons Limitation Treaty with Soviet leaders such as Leonid Brezhnev and Alexei Kosygin.
Regardless of which party comes to power, Biden will often be needed to do some diplomatic work.
He is also the only politician since 9/11 who dared to express reservations about Bush's unilateralism.
He is also the only person who, after the Iraq War, explicitly stated that the government had problems and that he had cast the wrong vote.
Although his life was full of regrets, and he failed to win several party primaries, he was one of the strongest pillars of the Democratic Party. Without his unique appeal to white working-class voters and Senate centrists, Obama would have had a very difficult time being elected.
He was also the least elite member of the Democratic Party, a graduate of a prestigious Ivy League school, capable of speaking directly to workers in union halls. However, his intellectual abilities were strong enough that in the first vice-presidential debate of the 2012 election, he completely overwhelmed his opponent, Paul Ryan, easing the shadow of Obama's initial defeat.
Now that Obama has won re-election, Biden has returned to his alma mater for the first time to participate in an event, and the scale of the event can be imagined.
It was certain that the entire audience would stand up and applaud, and the people on stage would come down to greet them.
The subsequent activities basically consisted of Biden endorsing Obama.
Half an hour later, the event officially ended.
But the real exchange had only just begun when the student reporters and some government officials who had only come to make up the numbers left.
The staff who had been waiting outside began setting out various cold dishes, turning the place into a luncheon gathering.
Those who remained were the true elites of the University of Delaware.
Biden spoke with almost everyone for a while, then walked over to Chen Yiran, glanced around, and said in a low voice, "Fred Sears has already told me to thank you for your support of the Delaware Community Foundation. Of course, I'm more interested in the role of that technology you mentioned in the election."
