Chapter 298 Operation Wutong Wood
Langley, a suburb of Virginia, is located on the border between Washington, D.C. and Virginia, next to the Potomac River.
Before 1961, this place was just an ordinary rural outskirts. But after 1961, the CIA moved its headquarters here and carried out a major construction project in the following years, building a comprehensive integrated office and training base.
Although all the buildings were designed to be surrounded by trees and physically completely hidden, they are not even visible from the road.
However, since then, the name Langley has become the exclusive name for the headquarters of the CIA, and most Americans no longer know that it is a place name.
Starting in April 2013, the St. Paul's Action Group, responsible for the Syrian region, was established in Langley. They were busy gathering information and establishing communication channels.
Syria has little oil and an underdeveloped economy, but its geographical location is extremely important. It is Iran's only strategic corridor in the Arab world, Russia's key to the Mediterranean, and it also controls Qatar's gas pipeline, as well as the Kurds, whom Türkiye is concerned about.
So this place has always been a powder keg.
The Syrian government forces of the Assad family had already begun a complete collapse in early 2013 and were on the verge of collapse.
However, in April, three forces began to frantically support Assad, with Iran being the most prominent among them.
Despite its own dire economic situation, Iran continues to inject billions of dollars into Syria annually. This is because Assad's Nusserian sect in Syria is a branch of Shia Islam.
Iran supports and advocates for the establishment of a Shiite crescent stretching from Tehran to Beirut. Iran cannot afford to lose this civil war, so they have directly intervened. Officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are directly in command of the operations, and the Quds Force is responsible for sending Shiite militias from Iraq and Afghanistan into Syria.
The second force is Hezbollah in Lebanon. In April 2013, they deployed over 1000 elite troops to Qusayr, marking Hezbollah's first large-scale positional warfare operation outside its own borders. Their logic is simpler: the Assad regime is their arms supply route, and if Syria falls, Hezbollah will be trapped.
The third force is Russia, which has not yet intervened but is eager to act, having vetoed all resolutions concerning Syria in the UN Security Council.
Tartus is Russia's only ice-free port and supply depot in the Mediterranean, and they have even been trying to turn it into a permanent naval base. Once Assad falls, Russia's access to the Mediterranean will be effectively closed.
The government forces have supporters, and the opposition also has supporters.
However, the situation on the opposition side was much more chaotic, with three opposing camps humiliated and cobbling together under the same flag.
The Free Syrian Army was the earliest opposition group to emerge, formed by defecting officers from the Syrian government army. They used the banner of democracy and freedom to obtain funding and weapons from the United States. However, most of these individuals were opportunists seeking to make money; their combat effectiveness was poor, and they lacked unified command, with local armed groups fighting independently, essentially functioning as warlords.
Then there are the truly capable Sunni Islamic militias like the Islamic Army and the Free Sham Islamic Movement. They are not trained by the United States; they are supported by countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Although they are all Muslim countries, the relationship between these countries and Iran is probably worse than that between the United States and Iran.
The last one is even more terrifying; they're called the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's branch in Syria. They're a clearly defined terrorist organization, recognized and listed as a terrorist organization by the United Nations. They're even more capable and more ruthless.
They acted as troublemakers, causing the US and Israel to consistently misjudge the situation regarding Syria.
Then there are the Kurds, who don't fight or vie for anything. They control an autonomous region in northeastern Syria, living in their own territory, ignoring both sides, and just guarding their home.
This brings up another troublemaker, Turkey. They are completely indifferent to the internal conflicts in Syria; their sole aim is to eliminate the Kurdish regime. This is because there are over 20 million Kurds in southeastern Turkey, and the presence of a Kurdish regime on their doorstep makes them extremely uneasy.
Amid the chaotic situation, the Wutongmu Action Group had no other options but to start spending money everywhere to purchase suitable weapons and send them into Syria.
Spreading money is a skill, and weapons and equipment aren't easy to sell either. Due to the Soviet Union's regional influence and its later complete loss of control over weapons manufacturing, all parties in Syria were essentially using Soviet-made equipment.
For ease of communication and operation, Operation Sycamore had to purchase various used equipment from Eastern Europe and send it over. This, of course, meant that defense contractors in the United States wouldn't be able to profit from the project, which was a major drawback.
So the Stony Wood Operations Group started leaking information and gave some conditions. They needed some cheap, easy-to-use equipment, such as surveillance equipment and electronic warfare equipment. They just needed to purchase a few to make up for the kickbacks from the major arms dealers. However, Kratos Corporation brought them an unexpected surprise.
At the Dagway Proving Ground in Utah, several CIA field weapons analysts reviewed the data provided to them by Kratos and the weapons demonstrations they had conducted.
Due to the inherent limitations of the drone's system, Kratos employed a special operating method, flying the drone to the edge of a small canyon and using inertia to drop an M67 fragmentation grenade down from the edge.
Kratos's engineer, standing nearby, enthusiastically explained, "The potential of this platform is far more than this. If we get orders, we can ask Aurora to do more personalized customizations."
There are two possible approaches. One is a higher-performance version that can drop weapons from two to three thousand meters down during a stalemate, keeping the enemy in a state of constant panic. This is more terrifying than a regular airstrike because airstrikes are always intermittent in scale, and these drones will keep you up at night.
The second option is to customize some smaller, lighter, and less heavy products, which can be used directly as disposable suicide drones. Their flight control is so powerful that, as long as they are lightweight enough, their flexibility will be incredibly exaggerated.
It's perfect for urban stalemates and street battles. Even inside buildings, safety won't be guaranteed; the sheer number of suicide drones will drive people insane.
The agents from Operation Wutongmu didn't say anything, but examined the drone carefully from all angles, then pointed to a line of English labels and said, "Made in China? Are you kidding me?"
Eric Demarco quickly explained, "Aurora Group is a huge multinational corporation based in Singapore. It just happens to have a factory in China. We can supply it to other countries for manufacturing."
"Now that you've got it all sorted out, let us handle it."
"The normal procedure would be for us to contact Aurora first, sign a supply agreement, and then come back to you once everything is ready. But isn't this an emergency situation? A demand-driven supply chain lock-in is reasonable, right? We need a quote from you before we talk to Aurora Group."
"There are still risks involved, after all, Aurora doesn't have the qualifications to buy and sell weapons."
Eric Demarco grinned broadly: "We didn't buy weapons from him. He only sold a batch of civilian drones and AI avionics modules to an American defense integrator."
"Okay, if you can get it done in 3 months, I can place an order for 3 million US dollars. You need to hurry."
