Chapter 335 Two Chairpersons
Chen Yiran arrived in Hsinchu that evening and met with Jin Chenghao, who had been sent there earlier.
Upon meeting, Kim Sung-ho first gave an exaggerated bow, almost hitting his head on the ground.
"Thank you, boss. I will definitely work hard for the aurora borealis in the future."
Chen Yiran knew he was referring to the previous money-sharing. Jin Chenghao was an OPC operator whom he had recruited from Samsung, making him one of the earliest employees to join FlowEDA, aside from the initial 11 founders.
Moreover, he has always done a good job, being responsible for communication with Samsung regarding process technology. He has been doing well in recent years, and he is somewhat similar to Amit.
He was very responsive to all of Chen Yiran's actions; to put it bluntly, he was good at flattery, and the kind of person who was both capable and good at it. He was very easy to use, so after securing a seat on the TSMC board, Chen Yiran, after looking around, chose to send him to prepare for taking over TSMC.
Chen Yiran said with a joking smile, "No, how come I remember your ideal was to retire at 50? Then you would resign and travel the world with all kinds of high-end cameras and lenses to watch birds."
You've made a lot of money these past few years, haven't you? Now that you're getting these shares, it seems like you can retire now.
Kim Sung-ho immediately stood at attention: "No! I'm only 35 this year. I agreed to retire at 50, and I definitely won't retire earlier."
"You're not being sincere at all."
Kim Sung-ho bowed and smiled obsequiously: "Boss, to be honest, marriage is terrifying, and having children is even more terrifying. Two years ago, because the company was doing well, I got arrogant and broke my vow never to get married."
Marrying a young and beautiful wife suddenly increased household expenses.
Last year, the company gave out even more money, and I broke my vow that I would never have children and had one.
And then it got even more outrageous. Raising children is so expensive! And since I have twins, it cost even more.
And that means I can't retire now, plus my wife and parents are constantly urging me to be more ambitious.
He said Aurora Group is a once-in-a-millennium company, a great opportunity in my life that I must seize. He said the boss is a good person, kind to his employees, and sentimental. Working hard for the boss will guarantee my children's future.
"Alright, alright, stop flattering me. You're lucky, kid, twins! I'm too lazy to buy anything as a gift, I'll just give you a check later, you can decide what to buy for the kids."
"You've reminded me that the company should provide some subsidies or something when employees have children, as a company benefit."
Kim Sung-ho asked somewhat embarrassedly, "Boss, you don't need to give me anything, but can I ask you a question?"
"What's the problem?"
"Lanai Island, I didn't go this time, but everyone in the group is talking about it. The island has beautiful scenery, a great climate, and excellent conditions in all aspects, making it a great place to raise children."
I know Lanai is your private island. I'd like to ask what the process is if I want to move there, and how I apply? I want to bring my parents there to retire, and I'll go there after I retire.
Hawaii happens to be a birdwatching paradise.
"Slippery guy, just talk to Amit. There aren't many conditions for employees to move in. The villas at the Four Seasons Hotel were built very well before, and employees were eligible to rent or buy them. Okay, let's talk about the TSMC issue."
Kim Sung-ho bowed again, then turned on the projector and began to get down to business.
"Boss, TSMC's current situation is a bit delicate."
Morris Chang may have stepped down this time because he lost his will to retire after our surprise attack, but in fact he had made many preparations for retirement due to his age, but unexpected events kept happening.
In 2005, he retired and handed over the CEO position to Tsai Li-hsing. However, after the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, TSMC fell into operational decline and even had to lay off employees, so Morris Chang had no choice but to return to the helm.
Then in 2010, because of the rapid rise of FlowEDA, he launched the three-in-one succession plan, wanting to divide TSMC's main operations into three major functions: R&D, manufacturing, and marketing, with three people taking turns in charge.
Chiang Shang-yi was in charge of R&D, while Liu Te-yin and Wei Che-chia served as co-COOs, responsible for manufacturing and marketing. However, you managed to recruit Chiang Shang-yi to our Wan Guo Yuan company, so this system didn't materialize.
Research and development is a highly demanding organization. When Chiang Shang-yi was in charge, he was very adept at it, but problems would arise under Liu De-yin and Wei Zhejia, which is why Chang Chung-mou's second attempt at retirement failed.
Then this year, according to internal sources at TSMC, we learned that on the day of the shareholders' meeting, in addition to announcing major future decisions for the company, Morris Chang originally intended to announce his resignation as CEO, remaining only as chairman. He plans to gradually retire, first by implementing a dual-leadership system.
Although he chose to retire completely after the unexpected incident, he handed over the chairmanship to Zeng Fancheng, a senior technical figure and veteran of TSMC.
However, the dual leadership system he designated has still taken shape, with Liu Deyin and Dr. Wei Zhejia serving as general manager and co-CEO.
However, Morris Chang's initial plan was for two people to perform the duties assigned by the chairman and report directly to him. Furthermore, the finance and legal departments would still report directly to the chairman.
The two men, whom Morris Chang called his two henchmen, were willing to obey his orders. However, with Tseng Fan-cheng now the CEO, his prestige is insufficient. Therefore, TSMC is now in a state of great chaos, essentially fragmented into numerous factions.
Chen Yiran nodded: "You told me before that we should support one of these two people and kick the other out? Explain why."
Jin Chenghao then pushed out a small blackboard from the side, with Liu Deyin and Wei Zhe's portraits pinned to the top, and many lines drawn below connecting them to various people. It looked a bit like a detective drama.
"Boss, look at these two people's basic information and their main network of relationships."
Liu Deyin was described by Morris Chang as a scholar-general skilled in factory construction. He previously served as a process integration manager at Intel, responsible for developing silicon process technology for microprocessors. He also worked as a research manager at the High-Speed Electronics Research Laboratory at Bell Labs.
He joined TSMC in 1993 as deputy director of the engineering department, responsible for the construction of TSMC's first 8-inch wafer fab. He was also in charge of the integration of World Semiconductor Systems, which TSMC later acquired.
He is a master of factory construction and capacity management, and a driving force behind advanced process technology. His leadership style leans towards a strong-arm approach, and he is also the face of TSMC, representing the company externally and primarily responsible for strategy and government relations. He is known for his adeptness in navigating complex situations.
Wei Zhejia was called a fierce general by Morris Chang. His technical skills were even stronger. He was the first to measure the resistance of titanium alloys on wafers at Texas Instruments. He made more than a dozen patents in four years. Later, he went to STMicroelectronics and Chartered Semiconductor in Singapore, where he was responsible for technology and operations management.
He joined TSMC in 1998, where he was in charge of the Mainstream Technology Business Group, which consisted of the most important wafer fabs. Later, Morris Chang deliberately put him in charge of corporate development and business growth, grooming him as a core strategic figure.
Technically, he is superior to Liu Deyin. His leadership style is more versatile; he is said to be humorous and witty externally, but an iron-fisted leader internally.
I strongly suggest that we support Wei Zhejia taking over and completely controlling TSMC. Furthermore, we should oust Liu Deyin, and even his close associates, from the company.
There are two main reasons. First, in terms of loyalty, Liu Deyin is more loyal to Zhang Zhongmou. To some extent, he may not necessarily consider issues from the perspective of TSMC's interests, but will be loyal to his old leader.
I discovered this during my several exchanges with him after arriving in Taiwan. Although he did not explicitly express his dissatisfaction with us, he was clearly resistant to TSMC taking over all of Aurora's orders.
Wei Zhejia is different. Although he had previously led the technical team, his thinking was actually more customer-oriented. Overall, he was unwilling to confront us for the sake of the interests of so-called allies.
At the beginning of this year, Morris Chang carefully selected a team of 70 people to expand new customers and new business directions, which can be regarded as a department to deal with the crisis.
At the time, Liu Deyin didn't take over this small team; it was Wei Zhejia who took the initiative. He currently has a slogan: "Customers succeed first, TSMC succeeds second." He doesn't care much about whether TSMC will become someone else's puppet, as long as there's money to be made.
In this regard, we are in agreement. If TSMC can completely side with us, and even have the opportunity to directly merge with Aurora in the future, I think we can stop poaching people from TSMC.
These are secondary issues; there's a more crucial problem that compels us to support Wei Zhe's family.
Chen Yiran was a little curious: "Are all these reasons secondary? Then why did you go through all that trouble? Just tell me the main points first."
"Sorry, boss, I'm starting with the technical aspects. What I'm about to say is the political issue. Liu Deyin, although known for his smooth-talking and social skills, I heard a rumor from my fellow Korean that he's actually a die-hard."
He once said at a private cocktail party that a direct assault would result in an economic dead end. Furthermore, he harbors systemic prejudice against great Chinese businessmen, lacking both foresight and magnanimity; therefore, he is unsuitable.
Chen Yiran didn't say anything, but instead took out her phone.
Jin Chenghao waited patiently for nearly ten minutes before hearing Chen Yiran's reply.
"I don't mind if he's pro-American, but I can't accept his opposition. Let's do it your way and get rid of Liu Deyin. The dual leadership strategy can continue, and you can take his place."
Jin Chenghao was pleasantly surprised, but after hesitating for a moment, he still declined: "Boss, I know my own limitations. I can't hold things together here. At the board meeting, I can act as your shadow and supervise from here."
"If I were to join TSMC as CEO, I wouldn't be qualified, nor do I have enough experience or ability. My suggestion is, should we bring Mr. Chiang Shang-yi back?"
Chen Yiran felt this was unlikely, because Chiang Shang-yi was very comfortable on the mainland and clearly didn't want to move around much, plus he was already of retirement age.
After talking with Jasmine, we looked through all the capable people available for this period and found someone who was in a rather awkward situation but was exceptionally suitable to take over.
"No need, Mr. Jiang is quite comfortable living in Beijing. I have a better candidate who would be perfect to take over!"
