Chapter 397 The Annihilation of Iran's Top Leadership
In a corner of the Alborz Mountains north of Tehran, at the command post of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, all of Iran's top military and political leaders were gathered. They were not suddenly assembled here because of the missile unit's surprise attack, but to discuss the Supreme Leader's situation.
The Supreme Leader of Iran, also known as the Spiritual Leader or the Revolutionary Leader, is the representative of the reclusive Imam and the ultimate interpreter of the religion. He is the highest authority in Iran's political and religious system, wielding power far exceeding that of the president, and is the true supreme decision-maker of the country.
Armed forces, whether regular troops, the renowned Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or ordinary police, all regard the Supreme Leader as their supreme commander.
He decides on key government personnel appointments and the drafting of the constitution. Even more outrageous is that although the president is democratically elected and represents the will of the people, he can directly impeach him if he doesn't like him. Iran's first president was directly dismissed by the Supreme Leader after he had served his purpose.
Choosing the supreme leader is quite complicated. A group of senior religious jurists discuss the matter, and the discussion is almost like a real-life philosophy debate.
Therefore, before the Supreme Leader is established, there must be internal discussions within Iran. A power vacuum is unacceptable; someone must be able to exercise these powers and successfully transition the leadership.
There are simply too many high-level officials who need to meet and discuss matters together, and they are terrified of being wiped out by a few Israeli missiles. Adding to this, things haven't been very peaceful south of Tehran lately, and there are reports that Israel is planning a major surprise attack there.
Therefore, instead of choosing the government building in Tehran or the Revolutionary Guard headquarters in southern Tehran, they came to the command post of the armed forces.
The atmosphere in the conference room was not good at this moment. The various factions were unwilling to give in, and everyone spoke with a smile that concealed a knife, harboring eight million ulterior motives.
The sudden death of the Supreme Leader has left everyone somewhat restless. Although all power belongs to the Supreme Leader, what if he decides to relinquish it?
Therefore, the Revolutionary Guard began to favor Mujtaba, for a simple reason: the only reason Mujtaba could be considered a candidate was that he was the son of Harmenei. If the Revolutionary Guard successfully supported his rise to power, Mujtaba would inevitably need them to secure his position.
Shia Islam has a strict pyramidal hierarchy, starting with the religious apprentice Talib, then the intermediate Hojat Islamist, then the senior religious scholar Ayatollah, and finally the Grand Ayatollah, of which there are only a few dozen worldwide.
In theory, only the Grand Ayatollah is eligible to elect the Supreme Leader. However, there are some flexibility in this matter. In 1989, in order to allow his preferred successor to take over, the then Supreme Leader urgently amended the constitution, forcibly removing the clause that the Supreme Leader must be the Grand Ayatollah.
So it's not illegal for Mujtaba, who is just a mid-level nobody, to be forcibly chosen. It's just that hereditary succession is a sensitive issue, and the seminary might cause a stir.
The pragmatists, on the other hand, hoped to take the opportunity to put forward a moderate candidate. They had long wanted to stop fighting the Jews and were very dissatisfied with the union of church and state, but they did not dare to overthrow it directly. So they were preparing to put in a suitable person and take it slowly.
There are also some more radicals who feel that the current situation is too chaotic and that a military government should be established instead.
After arguing for half an hour, a dozen or so heavily armed soldiers suddenly ran in from outside.
The people present tensed up instantly. President Rouhani looked at the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Hassan: "What, are you planning a coup?"
Hassan immediately turned to look at the Revolutionary Guard Commander-in-Chief Jafari, with an expression that said, "I didn't expect you to have bribed so many people on my turf."
Jafari looked bewildered and turned to look at Defense Minister Haze.
Hazma then looked at Intelligence Minister Allawi.
Alavi frowned and asked, "What's going on?"
A dozen or so people came in and protected Alavi, saying, "A bunch of monsters have come outside, they look like American robots! We can't hold them off anymore, come with me quickly."
Those present quickly stood up and followed suit to seek refuge.
There was already some chaos outside the gate, with countless soldiers being organized by intelligence officers to go out and slow down the enemy's advance.
As the host, Hassan, ran, he said, "Come on, there's a very sturdy safe house down here."
Alavi's secretary quickly stopped him, saying, "We can't stay underground! We've received news that the missile brigade in Kermanshah has also been attacked. Their feedback is that they can't hold out at all. That robot is a new type of weapon, and we can't defeat it in a confined space."
"We're too limited with heavy weapons; we wouldn't survive using them ourselves. We can't even effectively use anti-tank guns here. We have to get out of here quickly; we need to get back to Tehran and disperse to hide."
Shocked by the dire situation, the group fled for refuge. Reaching a fork in the road, Allawi said, "I trust the judgment of my intelligence unit. The choice is yours: come with me or stay here. Hassan, if you're not coming with me, find a soldier to guide me; I don't know where your backup exit is."
Gunfire could be heard in the distance, and occasionally screams could be heard. In the empty underground passage, the sounds carried exceptionally far.
Hassan hesitated for a moment and said, "I'll go with you too, follow me, but that exit is a backup emergency exit. We don't have any cars here, just some motorcycles. Not counting your soldiers, there are more than forty of us. How are we going to get through?"
Alavi said nonchalantly, "It's alright, we couldn't use a car anyway. Where's the backup exit? Is it disguised?"
"It's disguised; it's on the mountain, and there are quite a few trees around it."
Alavi said confidently, "Great, we can't just send someone to pick us up. There are definitely drones and other drones around here, just waiting for us to come out and blow us up. If we go out by car, we'll die even faster."
"Once we go out, I'll send these dozen or so men out to report back. First, get someone to take care of the machines. We'll go up the mountain and find some crevices to hide in. We'll come out again once things have calmed down."
The forty-odd people around looked at Alavi with admiration. As expected of someone in intelligence, he remained calm and composed even in the face of such a cataclysmic event, and was still able to find a way to survive.
The road was long, and after a series of uphill climbs, the forty-odd people, panting, carefully pushed open a large door.
The gate was disguised as a mound of earth. Alavi took the lead, walked out of the gate to inspect the area, and then came in to call everyone out.
The soldiers around Alavi had disappeared. Alavi then said, "Find your own places. I'm going down the mountain for a bit. I'll issue a warning if anything happens. Then you'd better wish yourselves good luck and run away as fast as you can."
More than forty Iranian officers didn't say much and quickly ran up the mountain. One by one, they started climbing trees and digging into pits. A few even found crevices in the rocks and crawled inside, using leaves to cover themselves.
Although it was night, the summer night was not cool, and the silence around made one even more uneasy.
Hassan lay in a crevice in the rocks, feeling that something was wrong, but he couldn't pinpoint what it was. After what seemed like an eternity, he finally realized what was wrong.
Damn it, with Iran's intelligence capabilities, if it really was Israel that launched a surprise attack on the missile brigade, how could the intelligence have been transmitted so quickly!
I've been sold!
Hassan wanted to get up and do something, but he was afraid that he was wrong and would lose his life if he went out. He hesitated for a moment, and then heavy footsteps sounded around him.
He quickly held his breath; the leaves piled up in the cracks of the rocks could block his view. He just needed to endure it for a while and not make a sound.
He didn't know how much time had passed, but just when he thought he had dodged it, a metal arm pierced through the leaves and smashed his head cleanly.
At the foot of the mountain, Alavi listened to the curses, screams, wails, and pleas for mercy coming from above. Trembling slightly, he lit a cigarette, took a puff, and asked his secretary beside him, "Is everything resolved?"
"It's resolved. Everyone who came with us is dead. Minister, it all seems like a success, but those junior officers in the missile force were too audacious. They attacked the American base directly. How are we going to handle this?"
Allawi chuckled dismissively and said, "Ha, what's the point of worrying about an ending now? I used to wonder if I could change the status quo in Iran, but look at these robots, what can they change? Let them do whatever they want, as long as we can live, that's enough. Save up some money, and when we've saved enough, we'll immigrate to Singapore."
Just then, two more hundred-eyed robots approached. Alavi and his secretary tremblingly touched a signal device in their pockets. Only after the two hundred-eyed robots had passed did they breathe a sigh of relief.
But what was terrifying was that the robot's footsteps didn't go far; instead, they stopped behind them.
Alavi and his secretary exchanged a glance, neither daring to turn around.
All I can do is pray in my heart, God, give me a chance, God.
