Reborn in 2010, the AI in my mind is too powerful.
Chapter 423 Enhancement Experiment
In science fiction, there is a specific genre called Uplift, which means lifting or raising.
This is a science fiction tradition, a question that countless science fiction novels have loved to explore: the process by which intelligent beings transform less intelligent animals into more intelligent species. Common transformation processes include using technology, culture, and gene editing to achieve this enhancement.
This concept likely originated from H.G. Wells' 1896 science fiction novel, *The Island of Doctor Moreau*, in which Doctor Moreau surgically alters various animals on the island, turning them into beastmen, some of whom possess intelligence approaching or even surpassing that of humans.
Countless science fiction novels that followed can be said to have included the concept of "enhancement".
For example, in "2001: A Space Odyssey," the black monolith elevates apes; in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," human medicine unexpectedly elevates apes; and even the first Doraemon movie, "Nobita's Dinosaur," can be considered this type of novel.
Aurora didn't specifically plan to do this kind of research, but since we have wet components, it's reasonable to test their application on animals.
Moreover, Chen Yiran had discussed with Jasmine from the very beginning that they wanted to create a world with preserved eggs!
Although he had preserved the cells of the preserved egg, the last resort would be to clone a preserved egg.
However, since the cloned product is not the original preserved egg, Chen Yiran still prefers to overcome the technical difficulties as soon as possible so that the animal's consciousness can be transferred and then transplanted into the clone.
Such research is related to human research, because it involves replicating humans, tweaking them, inserting a chip into their brains, and then transferring their consciousness. This is the next step in Aurora's research, since not everyone can accept a mechanical body.
Animals are even more susceptible to this. Their low intelligence makes their cognitive abilities very poor, and when they are directly connected to a mechanical body, they have no idea what is happening.
Naturally, a new project group emerged in Hawaii dedicated to studying the issue of animal consciousness.
Humans have long studied ways to enhance animal intelligence.
In 2012, the University of Southern California and the University of Kentucky conducted an experiment using five Ganges monkeys. They implanted electrodes in the monkeys' brains and then used a slight electric current to stimulate the brains to assist learning.
The experimental results showed that their learning efficiency improved by 10%. They even went further, deliberately getting the monkeys stained with flour, causing cognitive impairment.
They then discovered that even while the medication was still in the body, the learning efficiency could be maintained simply by using electrical stimulation.
Another paper published in 2014, based on research conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in 2009, directly replaced two human-specific amino acids on the human FOXP2 protein by knocking them into the mouse's own Foxp2 gene, creating two humanoid mice.
Although there is little difference between human mice and ordinary mice in terms of pure spatial single memory patterns, human mice are significantly faster when the task requires unconscious procedural learning. For example, they will autonomously judge that turning left will get them a chocolate reward based on the ground texture, which will become an instinct for them.
The success of these predecessors has greatly inspired the research on aurora borealis. The researchers directly set up two project groups. One of them used the mice's own neurons to make wet components, then connected them to the mouse brains. Without trying to equip them with translators, they relied solely on external rewards to directly connect them to silicon and let them perform in a completely unrestricted manner to see the results.
Another test involved connecting mice to a common human-derived wet device and actively using a translator to attempt to establish a connection between the mouse's brain and the wet device.
The effect was very obvious. The mice with the mouse-like neuronal wet device became significantly smarter. Although there was no translator, with the help of chocolate rewards and the autonomous memory translation of the neurons, the mice cleared hundreds of mazes in a single day.
The human-derived wet device mice are even more extreme. After a brief pause at the beginning, the detected wet device will carry out ultra-large-scale computational thinking along with the silicon-based chip.
Then the mice will even refuse to participate in the experiment and try to find an exit to escape from the experiment.
The researchers were very surprised and then began even more exaggerated large-scale experiments.
Monkeys, dolphins, and all sorts of animals were brought into the lab. Chen Yiran even gave direct instructions, demanding that they work on the dogs first and get them out as soon as possible.
At Chen Yiran's home, Brett Kagan, the current head of wet component research at Aurora, gave Chen Yiran his final report.
"We've conducted experiments on 16 dogs, three of whom developed severe cognitive problems and eventually died from starvation. The remaining 13 all exhibited varying degrees of behavioral confusion. In short, they clearly still retain some canine instincts, but their rapid intellectual growth has made them less adaptable."
Moreover, strictly speaking, I believe it's different from humans using wet parts. We humans possess self-awareness, but animals have very poor self-awareness. We believe that what we've created can no longer be considered dogs that can only be improved by using wet parts; we've created a completely new kind of being with a new understanding.
Pidan was wearing noise-canceling headphones and seemed very uncomfortable. He kept shaking his head and even tried to paw at them, but Chen Yiran caught him in her arms.
"It can't be a completely new species, can it? After all, it's just an external wet object; there wasn't actually any implantation. What about other animals? What happened to them?"
Brett Kagan, looking displeased, said, "This is the next issue I want to discuss with you. In all our mammalian experiments, we have found that all the animals participating in the experiments have undergone very significant changes in their brains. These are not simple changes, but structural mutations."
According to our current experiments, after a mouse is connected to the wet device for two weeks, its brain undergoes significant changes, becoming increasingly similar to that of our wet device. We are currently unsure of the long-term consequences of these changes.
However, our tests showed that even after stopping the use of wet components, their long-term intelligence improved to varying degrees after the mutation.
The most extreme example is the chimpanzee. After two weeks of wet testing, the chimpanzee's intelligence and cognition were almost indistinguishable from those of humans.
Even if the supply of wet parts is stopped, they will not revert to their former chimpanzee forms, but will instead resemble mentally challenged humans, with their overall behavioral patterns completely altered.
However, on the other hand, we discovered even worse phenomena in our experiments with dolphins.
Because it takes place in water, we cannot implant the device like we would a land-based creature wearing a helmet and connected via wires. Instead, we use an implantation device combined with Starlink data transmission to connect to the wet component.
Five days later, we began to communicate with the dolphins through various interactive boards, and we were quite certain that their overall intelligence and cognitive abilities were almost identical to those of humans.
However, their behavior is somewhat frightening; they have become more friendly towards humans but more ferocious towards other species.
Intelligent creatures like orcas and dolphins naturally enjoy playing with other animals, likely driven by their heightened curiosity following their increased intelligence.
Although Chen Yiran is becoming increasingly lazy, his knowledge is growing exponentially. He felt that what Brett said wasn't enough to make this researcher, who had been working in wet components for many years, look so bad; there must be something even bigger to come.
"Tell me directly what the most serious problem is; you look terrible."
Brett pulled out several documents and said, "We found that any wet parts that had been connected to those animals had varying degrees of... well, I don't know if I should use the word 'evolution'."
In short, they exhibited a kind of autonomy, even beginning to autonomously transmit electrical signals to the connected translator. Although these were just meaningless electrical signals, like wandering around in the dark.
"If you're going to tell me that some kind of neural tissue inexplicably developed self-awareness, then I can only send you to Europe. That's a ghost story that Europeans tell."
Brett quickly waved his hand: "No, no, neurons themselves have autonomy, but after being connected with animals, they seem to become too autonomous."
Based on changes in animal brains and our initial experiments with human consciousness transfer, I believe this is simply a biological phenomenon of upward perception.
Moreover, this phenomenon is contagious. For example, if a wet device A used a chip B in a data center for computation, then a wet device C, which is supported by chip B, will also exhibit this phenomenon even if no animals are connected to it.
"Luckily, you isolated the various research centers from the beginning, so only our institute is experiencing problems now."
Chen Yiran understood Brett's meaning and the significance of that displeased expression. Aurora couldn't possibly ignore this situation; the animals had to be euthanized.
However, those problematic wet components cannot be ignored. In fact, Aurora needs to conduct experiments to test whether they have any other special characteristics.
This requires testing with a real wet brain; to put it bluntly, it needs to be tested with real human consciousness.
Chen Yiran closed his eyes and thought for a while, and came up with a new guess, but he still had to test it to confirm it.
However, before that, we should remind Google.
Google and Aurora are different; their technology is insufficient. Their brain-computer interface currently connects to the brain to provide some basic vision and hearing.
Wet components have never been able to evolve into a wet component brain as a carrier of consciousness; they can only be used by AI.
They must have conducted many more experiments internally, but what if they didn't discover this phenomenon? What if their wet components were actually contaminated with this unknown phenomenon?
It's worth noting that Google's Virtual Space is about to launch in Europe, at which time brain-computer interfaces with wet components will be available for sale. Who knows what problems these problematic wet components might cause?
PS: Here's a brief explanation of the various confusing and nonsensical settings that have recently come out.
Wet components: biological parts composed of living neurons and other cells, equipped with silicon-based chips, can be used by AI, significantly enhancing AI's creativity. They are alive and require nutrient solutions to maintain their function. In the Aurora system, wet components are not purchased outright; continuous payment is required, otherwise they can be remotely shut down.
A "wet brain" is defined as human consciousness transferred from a wet device; it can only be called a "wet brain" for short.
Translator: A key component for communication and transfer between wet devices and human consciousness. Aurora has one, while Google currently only supports communication and brain-computer interfaces, not consciousness transfer.
Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a device made with wet components that transmits data to the human brain, enabling it to generate various senses. Aurora's product is called the Wanderer, and the model specifically designed for the Instance Project is called the Water Lily series.
Newborns: People whose consciousness has been transferred to the wet brain. This is the internal terminology used within Aurora; in society, they are called "adjusted beings." They can choose to have a physical body or choose to live only in the wet brain repository at the center of Aurora.
Aurora's basic immortality service: only the consciousness is uploaded, without a body. The fee is very low, and the consciousness can live in the oasis while fully conscious.
The plan is as follows: Every night, the brain can be scanned for ten minutes using the advanced brain-computer interface from the Water Lily series, and then uploaded to a satellite. In the event of an accidental death, the brain can be revived in the Oasis using the latest scanned consciousness, and then transformed into an altered human.
