There was a knock on the door.

The two women got out of Lin Hui's arms.

After the door opened, the village chief, Li Hairong, entered with an anxious expression.

Li Hairong is getting old and has recently been exhausted by the plight of the refugees.

He sat opposite Lin Hui, looking tired.

Lin Hui asked, "Village Chief, what brings you here?"

After Li Hairong sat down, he sighed, "Ah, Lin Hui, people are all panicking now. Nobody in the village dares to sleep at night. I really don't know what to do."

"With so many refugees, if they break in, what will we do...?"

Li Hairong did not continue speaking.

Lin Hui poured tea for Li Hairong before saying, "Village Chief, the situation has reached a critical point where there is no way to resolve it. In my opinion, if you want to live in peace, you have to protect yourself."

"So how exactly should we do it?"

Lin Hui said, "Actually, it's simple. Just organize everyone and form an organized defense."

"However, the current practice of holding farm tools at the village entrance to intimidate people is ineffective. It can't stop hungry refugees."

Li Hairong stared intently at Lin Hui.

"Village chief, Sigou Village has a unique terrain that is both offensive and defensive, which is our natural advantage. We can dig trenches and set up checkpoints."

Lin Hui dipped his finger in some tea and drew on the table: "Village chief, look, this is our village. It's surrounded by mountains on two sides, and only these two sides need to be defended."

"The key is this section at the village entrance. The village is surrounded, with a gap left to be guarded. If someone wants to get in, there's only one way. If they want to force their way in, they'll have to cross the moat and go through the wall."

"As long as it is built according to my instructions, it will not only be able to hold off the refugees, but it will also be able to fight against the Northern Wilderness army."

Li Hairong was at his wits' end, but when Lin Hui offered a solution, he immediately agreed.

He then said, "Lin Hui, I am over seventy years old. I want to pass the position of village chief to you so that you can lead everyone to resist foreign enemies."

Lin Hui wanted to decline, but looking at Li Hairong's earnest eyes, he ultimately didn't say no.

"Uncle Li, don't worry. As long as I'm here, I won't let a single person in Sigou Village die in vain."

"Okay, I'm relieved to hear that."

Li Hairong left with his cane, and soon after, the entire village, young and old, gathered in the open space outside Lin Hui's courtyard.

Hearing that everyone had arrived, Lin Hui and the other two went out.

Village chief Li Hairong stood at the front of the crowd, leaning on his cane.

Seeing Lin Hui come out, Li Hairong staggered to Lin Hui's side and said to all the villagers, "Listen to me, everyone, I'm old, it's time to replace the village chief."

"Lin Hui's achievements are evident to all, and he will be the village chief from now on."

As Li Hairong announced the end of the meeting, the villagers fell into a brief silence, followed by cheers.

Everyone wholeheartedly supported Lin Hui's decision to build the village.

Li Hairong smiled with satisfaction as he watched the villagers wholeheartedly support Lin Hui.

"Lin Hui, you're the village chief now, say a few words to everyone."

Lin Hui nodded and said loudly, "Everyone, I have been appointed as the village chief in a time of crisis. Next, I ask you to do two things: dig trenches and set up fences to surround the entire Sigou Village."

"Village chief, will this really work?"

"The refugees are too fierce. What if we end up putting in all our effort for nothing?"

Lin Hui chuckled: "Don't worry, here, there's no such thing as working for nothing."

"I know that each family doesn't have much food left, and most families rely on digging up wild vegetable roots to survive. Now that I've become your village chief, I won't let you go hungry."

"Starting this afternoon, each person will receive a bowl of thin porridge every day."

"Village chief, are you telling the truth? You're really going to give us porridge?"

"Don't worry, everyone, I mean what I say."

With just a bowl of rice, Lin Hui reassured everyone, and they quickly sprang into action.

The women and children were responsible for digging the trenches, while the men all went up the mountain to cut down trees and build fences.

According to Lin Hui's design, the trench was to be 2.5 meters deep. He thought it would be a huge project, but after he actually started, he found that the loess soil around Sigou Village was incredibly deep and easy to dig.

The moat was in front, and the fence was behind. The fence was made of wooden stakes as thick as a bowl, driven deep into the ground, making it extremely sturdy.

Lin Hui, along with the village's old carpenter, built a gate that could be opened and closed automatically, which could be operated by just one person.

In addition, a small wooden hut was built near the checkpoint specifically for the guards to stay in.

After the fence was completed, towers were built every three meters. Standing on one of these towers, one could clearly see what was happening several miles away from the village.

A row of braziers is neatly arranged along the fence, placed on a wooden frame a meter high. Once lit, they can illuminate the inside and outside of the fence as if it were daytime at night.

Three days later, the trenches, fences, and towers were all completed, truly demonstrating the power of numbers.

Looking at the results of their three days of hard work, the villagers instantly felt more confident.

With these things acting as a barrier, refugees simply couldn't get in.

Afterwards, Lin Hui categorized the villagers: the elderly stayed at home, children under ten years old stayed at home, and everyone else had their own tasks.

Nine people guarded the pass in three shifts, in groups of three. The women and children rested at night, while during the day they repaired the defenses of each house in the village, one by one, as a second line of defense.

Apart from the nine men guarding the pass, the other men went up the mountain every day to cut down trees, and all the trees they brought back were piled up in the open space in the village.

The old carpenter and two young men worked day after day making barricades.

That night, Lin Hui had just finished his intimate moments with his two wives, and Ling Ziyi was still convulsing, when there was a sudden knock on the door.

"Village chief, village chief..."

Upon hearing the sound, Lin Hui immediately sensed something was wrong; someone coming at this time must mean something big was about to happen.

Lin Hui got up and opened the door.

One of the guards standing at the gate said, "Village chief, I'm sorry to disturb your intimate moment with your two ladies, but the matter is urgent."

Lin Hui snapped, "Stop talking nonsense and get down to business."

"Village chief, we can see from the tower that a fast horse is coming towards Sigou Village from five miles away."

"Hmm? A fast horse?"

"Yes, village chief, there's no mistake. Everyone is carrying a torch, and they're moving very fast."

Lin Hui frowned, and after a brief moment of thought, said, "Go and guard the checkpoint. I'll be right there."

Lin Hui entered the house, dressed neatly, with the Zhentian Bow on his back and the Shenwei Lieshui Gun in his hand.

Seeing Lin Hui leave with weapons, Ling Ziyi asked, "What happened?"

"We don't know yet. They say a pair of fast horses are heading towards Sigou Village. At this time of year, riding fast horses, they can't be refugees."

Upon hearing this, Ling Ziyi immediately sat up, dressed herself as quickly as possible, and followed Lin Hui with a similar knife.

As Shui Feiyuan watched the two leave, she said, "Husband, Ziyi, be careful."

The two arrived at the village entrance, climbed the tower, and looked into the distance.

Two miles away on the official road, there were about twenty people, all on horseback, coming in a menacing manner.

Lin Hui couldn't immediately determine who it was.

He then ordered, "Go door to door and inform the entire village security team to assemble. The elderly and children are not allowed to go out."

"Yes, village chief."

Having arranged everything, Lin Hui waited quietly for the cavalry to approach from afar.

One mile, half a mile, and finally we arrived.

They stopped in front of the barricades outside the trench, and Lin Hui could finally see them clearly in the firelight.

There were twenty-seven people in total, all wearing tattered armor and carrying weapons.

Their faces were red and white from the cold, and some even had cracks on their faces from the cold.

Two words popped into Lin Hui's mind.

Broken troops.
