Mystery: Death Singer
Chapter 45 The Hanged Man Stood Still
On Monday morning, Edric put down his copy of the Backlund Morning Post, which still contained no mention of Ernst's acquisition of goods.
Edric looked frustrated. He had been waiting for almost a week, but the gathering of extraordinary individuals that the fat pharmacist had mentioned still hadn't happened.
However, ordinary, low-level participants in gatherings of extraordinary individuals do not recognize extraordinary characteristics, let alone determine the authenticity of things. This is why the few extraordinary characteristics he currently possesses have not been converted into gold pounds.
However, Edric wasn't idle during this week. He sold all the revolvers he had "picked up" from the Black Skull gang to Caspas, keeping only a few high explosives that might come in handy someday.
It is worth mentioning that Kaspass showed great respect to Edric on his second visit, and was even willing to buy back the product at a price slightly higher than the market price.
—He had his own sources of information and learned that all the high-ranking members of the Black Skull Party had died tragically overnight, leaving no trace of their bodies.
Around noon, Edric randomly picked a decent-looking coffee shop near his rented apartment and ordered a plate of lamb stew with tender peas, two loaves of bread, and a cup of cheap tea.
Considering that the meal only cost a little over ten pence, Edric didn't mind the shortcomings in the taste of the lunch and quickly devoured it all.
After returning to his residence under the less glaring sun, Edric ground some more herbs from the necromantic realm and collected the powder for use the next time he needed to communicate with spirits.
Before he knew it, it was already 2:50 p.m. Edric put down the mortar and pestle and lay down comfortably on the bed.
The instant three o'clock arrived, a familiar crimson light emerged from every corner, pulling Edric's consciousness up and sending him to infinite heights.
As soon as Edric opened his eyes, he heard Miss Justice's light and cheerful voice in his ear:
"Good afternoon, Mr. Fool. I have another page of Emperor Roselle's diary here."
"Good afternoon, Mr. Sun. Did you get the 'Mind Reader' formula?"
Edric leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes in a good mood, and felt that the sense of death he felt had faded considerably under the influence of Miss Justice's cheerful mood.
When Klein offered "Justice" Audrey an anonymous account at Backlund Bank with the classic reason, "I have a follower," the corners of his mouth began to turn up uncontrollably.
Edric never expected that the master of the bathroom would go to such lengths for a mere three hundred pounds. Unfortunately, apart from the person involved, Klein, and himself, no one else present understood the joke and could only secretly enjoy it to himself.
After the daily reading session ended, Klein looked at the members of the Tarot Club and said calmly:
"You are free to communicate now."
Alger, the "Hanged Man" who had been eagerly waiting, immediately spoke up:
"Mr. Fool, Mr. Death, Ms. Justice, I have obtained new intelligence. Hurricane Admiral Ziringus has infiltrated Backlund to complete a difficult mission. He may stay there for a long time and commit a horrific tragedy."
"Furthermore, I also know that this matter involves a very important item that can help Qilingus quickly become a high-sequence powerhouse."
"Won't he become a high-sequence leader soon? Isn't he afraid of losing control?" Audrey asked with a puzzled expression.
"Perhaps 'becoming' is just an adjective," Edric continued. "You could also think of it as a word like 'comparable to'."
"For example, a level one sealed artifact with relatively mild negative effects, as long as it possesses sufficient spiritual energy, can enable any mid-series extraordinary individual to acquire high-series level combat power in a short period of time."
"Of course, there is another possibility, such as that important item actually referring to the potion recipe that Zilingus will need next. With 'Crawling Hunger' around, the only things that limit Zilingus' growth are various resources and time."
"If he masters the role-playing method and successfully obtains the Sequence 5 and Sequence 4 recipes of the 'Sailor' path, he can indeed become the new king of the sea before other pirate generals."
Upon hearing this, Alger's eyes flashed with a fierce light, and almost instantly he thought of a certain undeveloped primitive island. His murderous intent towards Zilingus surged even more fiercely.
Just then, Edric suddenly changed the subject:
"Moreover, I think I have a pretty good idea of what this pirate general is planning to do by secretly infiltrating Backlund."
"What does he want to do?!" Alger's pupils constricted, and he quickly asked.
"Justice" Audrey also became very interested, her eyes shining as she looked intently at Edric's location.
Edric didn't keep them in suspense and went straight to the point:
"Think back to the extraordinary abilities that Zilingus possesses. He has the mobility granted by the 'Wind-Cherisher,' while the 'Crawling Hunger' makes him versatile enough to handle all sorts of unexpected situations. Most importantly, Zilingus also has the ability to transform into different people's appearances."
"In my opinion, Zilingus is more suited to be an assassin than a 'pirate general'—a top-tier assassin with diverse skills, capable of both fighting and running away, and able to blend into the crowd at any time."
"You mean, Zilingus secretly infiltrated Backlund to carry out an important assassination?!" Audrey, utterly shocked, snapped out of her "spectator" mode.
She immediately thought of her father, Earl Hall. After all, for a pirate general to leave the sea on his own initiative, his goal must be quite important.
It's currently social season, and although there are many nobles in Backlund, only a handful can be considered "important," and Earl Hall happens to be one of them!
"Justice" Audrey pursed her lips, taking the search for Ziringus's whereabouts even more seriously, and hurriedly asked "The Hanged Man" Alger for more details about Ziringus.
Throughout their conversation, Edric listened quietly. Although he knew that Zillingus had accomplished nothing and died at the hands of Mr. Azik, who happened to be passing by out of curiosity, he still treated the news as gossip.
Finally, after Alger, the "Hanged Man," finally stopped, Edric asked in a cryptic tone:
"Mr. Hanged Man, you seem unusually familiar with Qilingus. The information you just provided far exceeds what we could normally obtain..."
