Game of Thrones: Dance of the Dragons
Chapter 13 When the snipe and the clam fight, the fisherman benefits.
"But even if we give up the Stone Steps Islands to them or take them back, the Kingdom of the Three Daughters and Dorne will definitely continue to harass us," Renilla voiced her doubts.
She wasn't interested in politics; she only enjoyed reading historical stories and flying over King's Landing on her Syracuse.
Viserys nodded, clearly not denying it.
But he didn't choose to pause; instead, he looked at Baylor expectantly, hoping his eldest son could bring him more surprises.
"My child, now that you see the importance of the Stone Steps Islands to the kingdom, how do you plan to resolve the current troubles?"
Baylor had anticipated his father's question, but he was also worried that if he said he wanted to conquer Dorne and the Kingdom of the Three Daughters, his father would scold him.
According to information he received from Baylor, his father did not like war.
Even in his earlier years, before he was even born, Viserys wanted to use his sister Rhaenyra to arrange a marriage between himself and Prince Martell of Dorne, due to the frequent frictions on the Dornish border.
Viserys noticed Baylor's hesitation and spoke up, reassuring him.
"My child, speak your truest thoughts, and your father will not blame you."
Baylor said earnestly, "Dragon!"
"Conquer the Three Daughters Kingdom with dragons and sever their ties with Dorne; only then can the safety of the Stepstone Islands be guaranteed."
"If I have another chance, I will gather the dragon riders within my family and eliminate the opposing forces within Dorne that oppose the kingdom, so that it can truly integrate into the Seven Kingdoms."
Beller's extremely sharp analysis greatly surprised Renera, who had spent the most time with him.
To everyone's surprise, her seemingly gentle and refined younger brother, who exuded royal bearing, actually shared thoughts almost identical to those of her uncle, Prince Damon.
Judging from Viserys's reaction, this peace-loving king showed no anger or rage, but rather obvious joy.
Viserys cupped Baylor's cheek and gently kissed his left side.
"Baelor, my son, your intelligence and political acumen far exceed my expectations and imagination!"
"The only pity is that I only got half of the answers right."
"Half?" Baylor was clearly taken aback.
Renilla was even more incredulous. "Father, I thought Baylor's answer was perfect. How could his answer only be half right?"
Viserys smiled at the siblings and gestured for them to sit next to him.
"Do you know why? Why I've been delaying and refusing to send troops and provide support to the Stone Steps Islands?"
"Because your focus is on negotiating a peaceful resolution to the war with the Third Daughter Kingdom," Renilla said confidently, believing she knew her father best.
Viserys gave a soft "hmm," not denying that he had such thoughts, but that was not his ultimate goal.
"Baelor, my child, what is your opinion on this matter?"
Baylor frowned. Since his father hadn't rejected his idea of war, it meant he had someone else to worry about.
Throughout the entire continent of Westeros, the only one who could pose a real threat to House Tancredi was Corliss Valerian, the sea serpent who lived on Tidehead Island, married the Uncrowned Queen, and had three dragon riders.
"Father, are you trying to use this opportunity to weaken the Valerian family's power?" Baylor asked, enunciating each word clearly.
Viserys patted Baylor on the shoulder gently, adding with satisfaction, "Good, and your uncle too, my damned and good-for-nothing brother, Damon!"
"He has always coveted my throne, and even uttered the words 'Crown Prince for a day' on the day you were born—a crime punishable by death!"
When Damon is mentioned, Viserys' tone is full of disappointment and frustration.
In his eyes, Damon is like a child who never grows up. He's already in his thirties, yet he's still making such childish and fatal mistakes!
"Father, I once dreamed of a proverb on a distant continent: When the snipe and the clam fight, the fisherman benefits."
"I think that's a very fitting description of Uncle Damon and Lord Sea Serpent at this moment."
Viserys pondered for a moment, then smiled and gave an affirmative answer, "Eight simple words, yet containing profound wisdom!"
Hearing their conversation, Renilla was stunned. She never imagined that her father's usually kind smile concealed such a dangerous scheme.
Baylor was not surprised.
Having become the king of the Seven Kingdoms and peacefully ruling Westeros for over a decade, Viserys's political wisdom is absolutely not to be underestimated.
"Renera, you've been a sommelier for almost three years, yet your political acumen isn't even half that of your brother. You need to work harder!" Viserys said to Renera.
"My younger brother is special!"
"Not only did he receive the blessing of the Kingsguard, the White Stag, but he's also a Dreamwalker of House Targaryen. Isn't it normal for him to be stronger than me?"
That's what she said, but Renilla's hands kept kneading Beller's cheeks, the pressure just right for her to vent her anger!
Upon hearing the words "Dreamwalker," Viserys' tone became extremely serious. "Baelor, my child, you must remember this forever."
"Our family has many dragon riders, but very few dream walkers."
"Every dream may well foreshadow the future of House Targaryen. You must accept and understand the warnings your dreams bring!"
At this point, Viserys suddenly tilted his head back and took a deep breath. "Long ago, I also lost your mother in pursuit of that elusive dream."
"Baelor, my child, prophecies and dreams may bring you unexpected gains, so be sure to cherish them."
"I will, Father," Baylor said solemnly.
After discussing these matters, Viserys closed his eyes, feeling utterly exhausted, and leaned back on the wooden bench.
Then, he waved his hand, signaling the siblings to leave.
……
Outside the council chamber, the siblings walked aimlessly down the corridor.
Renilla suddenly spoke up: "Do you think Father was right not to support the Stone Steps Islands?"
Baylor nodded without hesitation. "Of course. One of them is trying to seize the throne, and the other is from the wealthiest family in the Seven Kingdoms, who owns a three-headed dragon."
At this point, Baylor's purple eyes turned noticeably cold. After looking up to make sure no one was around, he said in a low voice, "Actually, I'm even more cold-blooded than my father."
"I wish they both had died in this battle."
No wonder the father rejected both of them.
Without prior notification and disregarding the dignity of the royal family, they went to war with the Kingdom of the Three Daughters!
Isn't it just because they possess a dragon that they think they are invincible?
However, this incident greatly inspired Baylor and made him realize that the power of the royal family was far too weak.
To suppress Damon and the sea serpent, he must tame a dragon, a dragon that can suppress the bloodworm Korachu and Melias!
