After being forced into a marriage with a wealthy family, the virtuous wife caused a huge uproar.
Chapter 77 Horse Training
"Miss, I'm sorry." Yinghong knew she had made a mistake and apologized immediately.
"It's alright, step back, be careful not to get trampled by the horse." Rong Yingluo sat up straight.
The servant led the horse and began to circle the racetrack.
Rong Yingluo then noticed that several young ladies had ridden off at full gallop, while only three others were being led by the horse like her.
It seems too embarrassing.
She saw that Princess Jinyang had not yet mounted her horse and was communicating with the precious steed.
As she approached, Rong Yingluo saw Princess Jinyang feeding the horse a small clump of grass.
"Princess, the horses have already eaten their fill in the stable. Giving them more grass won't do much good," Rong Yingluo kindly reminded her.
"What should we do then?" Princess Jinyang asked, somewhat bewildered.
She always used to coax the horse like this, so why did it fail today?
"You can try maltose. I've heard that horses like sweets." This was something her master told her. She had once encountered a wild and untamed horse, and after taming it, she used sugar to coax it into submission.
"Really?" Princess Jinyang had never heard of this before.
"You'll know once you try," Rong Yingluo said confidently.
Princess Jinyang immediately ordered the palace maids who had come with her to fetch some malt sugar.
The servant led the horse faster and faster.
"Young Madam Gu, sit tight, I'm about to speed up," the servant reminded her. Seeing that Rong Yingluo was sitting very steadily, he planned to make the horse trot.
The servant was very dutiful; when the horse started running, he would remind Rong Yingluo to hold on tight from time to time.
After running two laps without any mishaps, the servant looked at her with admiration: "Young Madam Gu, you are the most stable rider I have ever met."
"Give me the reins, let me try controlling the horse myself." Rong Yingluo felt she had acted long enough and could try to do it herself.
"But you've only walked two laps," the servant said, still worried.
"It's okay, I'll take responsibility if anything goes wrong, I won't blame you." Rong Yingluo wanted to get started quickly, so she pretended to be working very hard.
Seeing that she said that, the servant had no choice but to hand over the reins.
Rong Yingluo gently spurred the horse, and it began to trot, running steadily and at a leisurely pace. However, to make it more realistic, she would occasionally sway her body, pretending to be about to fall off. But after only two laps, she was perfectly steady.
The other two young ladies, who also relied on servants to lead their horses, were filled with envy when they saw how quickly she could control her horse on her own.
Rong Yingluo gently waved the whip in her hand, and the horse quickened its pace upon hearing the sound.
The exhilaration of running against the wind made Rong Yingluo feel as if she had returned to the time when she traveled with her master.
She hasn't ridden a horse for almost a month since she got married.
"Wow, Mrs. Gu is a genius. She can ride a horse by herself after only two laps!" someone exclaimed.
Gu Qingya saw it too, and cursed inwardly, "Damn merchant girl, how could she be so capable?"
She also flicked her whip, quickened her horse's speed, circled halfway, and caught up with Rong Yingluo from behind.
"Sister-in-law, are you pretending you can't ride a horse?" Gu Qingya didn't believe that someone could ride a horse so well on their first try.
"You flatter me, little sister," Rong Yingluo said, pulling on the reins to slow the horse down.
But at that moment, Gu Qingya swung her whip and lashed it out, striking Rong Yingluo's horse.
The horse, in pain, neighed and suddenly bolted forward.
Rong Yingluo didn't expect Gu Qingya to pull this move. She leaned back and pulled the reins tight.
But the tighter she pulled, the less obedient the horse became.
Rong Yingluo screamed in panic.
But in just a short while, she regained control of her body, crawling forward and bracing her feet firmly against the stirrups.
She portrayed the process of a novice growing up in a very engaging way.
"I knew she could ride a horse; she was just pretending to show us," Gu Qingya scoffed.
"That's your sister-in-law, aren't you afraid your brother will punish you?" Princess Xiangyi was walking alongside Gu Qingya, and she was actually quite happy to see Gu Qingya punish Rong Yingluo.
"What are you afraid of? I didn't say anything wrong. How could a newcomer possibly do as well as her? I think she just doesn't want to participate in our competition. I'm going to tear off her disguise." Gu Qingya still believed that Rong Yingluo was faking it.
Rong Yingluo ran two laps before the horse was brought under control.
"Wow, Mrs. Gu, you're amazing! You rode so well on your first time riding a horse," Yu Qiannian exclaimed, pulling on the reins.
"Yes, Mrs. Gu gets the hang of it really quickly. We're going to have a competition after warming up, it seems you can join in too." Fang Yuening also came over to praise her.
"There's a competition?" Rong Yingluo was unaware of this.
"The princess probably didn't know you learned to ride a horse so quickly, so she didn't tell you. We have a competition every time we come to the racetrack. The princess has prepared a prize; whoever wins will receive the prize prepared by the princess," Fang Yuening explained.
"Do you know what the prize is?" Rong Yingluo was somewhat tempted. If the prize was one she liked, she could give it a try.
"The racecourse entrance pass allows you to ride horses here anytime without spending money or bringing your own horse."
"Only members of the royal family can obtain such tokens. You can't buy them even if you have money," Fang Yuening continued.
Rong Yingluo was truly moved.
"Then I'll run a few more laps. I'm going to participate in the competition later. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a token." Rong Yingluo made up her mind.
Gu Qingya overheard her words and was secretly delighted. Since she was going to participate, that was perfect.
Next, Rong Yingluo practiced horseback riding very seriously.
Everyone witnessed her growth, and Rong Yingluo rode better and better as time went on.
Princess Jinyang successfully mounted the reddish-brown Akhal-Teke horse.
She rode up to Rong Yingluo, pulled on the reins, and kept pace with Rong Yingluo.
"Young Madam Gu, you're really something! You learned to ride a horse so quickly. The first time I learned to ride a horse was when I was twelve years old. It took me a whole day to learn how to get on and off the horse, and to trot slowly. I even fell off the horse twice." Princess Jinyang recounted her embarrassing past.
"Princess, I am now sixteen years old and have grown up, so I can learn faster. When I was at my parents' home, I learned a little bit from my brother, but my mother wouldn't let me ride, so I haven't touched a horse since."
"But I just felt a natural affinity for horses. This horse is very gentle and easy to tame," Rong Yingluo said with a smile, making sure to reveal that she had handled horses before, otherwise it really wouldn't make sense.
"Would you like to try this horse?" Princess Jinyang saw that she rode very well and, having promised to share her prized horse with her, could not go back on her word.
"Alright, Princess, ride it a few times and then let me try it." Rong Yingluo was already very envious.
Princess Jinyang kept her word and, after riding a few more laps, handed the reins to Rong Yingluo.
"Be careful, this guy is very difficult to tame."
Sure enough, when the horse saw a stranger approaching, it immediately backed away, shaking its head several times, trying to break free of the reins.
Rong Yingluo loosened the reins, letting the horse retreat a few steps.
She took out some maltose candy, peeled off a piece, and ate it herself. The sweet aroma of the candy quickly filled the air.
The horse smelled a scent it liked and calmed down.
Rong Yingluo peeled another one and held it out in her hand.
The horse smelled the aroma and took two steps forward.
Seeing that it was tempted, Rong Yingluo put another one in her hand. The horse noticed her action and slowly walked towards her.
When she came to Rong Yingluo, she rolled her tongue and put two candies into her mouth, smacked her lips twice, and looked like she was enjoying herself.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Rong Yingluo reached out and gently touched the horse's neck. Seeing that it did not resist, she slowly moved her hand to its back.
"You're truly remarkable," Princess Jinyang exclaimed in admiration.
Taking advantage of the horse's docile state, Rong Yingluo stepped into the stirrups and leaped onto the horse.
Before she could even settle in, the horse went berserk, leaping back and forth on its hind legs, startling everyone into gasping in alarm.
