All-out Tower Defense: My Card-Drawing Talent is a Bit Strange
Chapter 9: Tentacle Nest
Some lords become passive and unmotivated during the year-end exams. It may not be that they fail the exams, but they use the excuse that the losses have outweighed the gains to cover up their true intention to reopen the system.
Yang Fei didn't want any regrets, nor did he want to do it all over again. So, if he could accumulate resources faster, he would never give up trying. But... looking at the precious gray crystal in his hand, this thing could save his life in a critical moment.
If the next wave doesn't produce any more, rounding up, it means we've lost a chance to try and fail. Is it really worth using those resources?
After thinking for a moment, Yang Fei looked at the random troop building nest in his backpack. This was the basic reward for clearing the first wave of easy difficulty. The normal difficulty reward was city walls and city gates, the hard difficulty reward was a lumber mill that could produce infinitely, and the extreme difficulty reward was a quarry. Everyone got the same reward.
As for the subsequent double-limit modes, they are for those who are prepared or ambitious to try. The one-time limit is the quarry, the two-time limit is the lumber mill, the five-time limit is the castle, and the ten-time limit is the random nest.
The doubled limit mode, in some cases, simply provides an extra basic reward, making it easier for ambitious lords to accumulate resources more efficiently—a kind of reward for the brave.
The difference between lords is already marked with a price during each wave of monster sieges. Those who dare to try can accumulate double the resources from the very beginning, and even summon double the soldiers, while those who do not want to try or dare not try will always be inferior, and it will be difficult to make up for it.
This is also a major reason for the low pass rate of the assessment. Nobody wants to be at a disadvantage from the start, especially with the first wave of troop nests that offer ten times the maximum reward. That's the only chance in the early stages to get high-level troops for free, so nobody wants to miss it.
Moreover, once a troop nest is established, one troop can be summoned every day without cost. With the addition of the troop nest at the highest difficulty, this means two soldiers every day. Unlike the lords who have no combat power in the early stages, these are real combat units.
In the early game, when defensive towers are either expensive to buy or dropped by monsters, having extra combat power, especially these ground blocking positions, is invaluable.
In addition to the previously mentioned higher wave count, the richer the daily rewards, this wave count not only refers to the four basic difficulties that must be cleared in one wave, but also includes clearing the doubled extreme mode.
For example, if two people have only completed the second wave of easy difficulty, why is the resource reward from the daily challenge much better for one person than the other? The answer is that the first person must have completed one or more of the doubled extreme modes, even if it's only the single extreme mode, it still has this effect.
Therefore, the person behind the scenes may be using this kind of interest relationship to constantly entice people to challenge high difficulty, resulting in a consistently low success rate. After all, watching everyone struggle for more benefits, only to end up with nothing, losing their lord status, and ending up with nothing, is also a kind of fun.
"Let's see what kind of troop type the nest will be. If it can help me defend the city, then I'll use these two items and try the normal difficulty. If the troops are too weak, then I'll just stick to the minimum rewards and not waste my precious energy crystals."
Having made up his mind, Yang Fei no longer hesitated and directly took out the random unit nest card to use.
"Using a random unit nest card, in the process of randomizing, randomization complete. Congratulations, Yang Fei-1 Apprentice Lord, you have obtained the Tentacle Monster Nest. Please specify the construction location." The familiar voice rang out, and before Yang Fei could hear the specific content, he was once again in God's-eye view.
"Holy crap, a tentacle monster? What is that thing?" As the only basic reward in the early stages that offers a chance to obtain high-level troops, Yang Fei was no stranger to the random troop nest cards from the simple wave rewards.
Although this thing is random, in most cases, the units you get are humanoid units. The better ones are just as powerful as ordinary monsters, such as orcs and elves, while the weaker ones might be goblins or gnomes.
Even if these aren't human, they're still considered a subhuman species, which at least makes them acceptable to humans. This can be seen as a form of protection for newcomers, because this world actually has indigenous peoples and language barriers. It's easier for the lord to manage subordinates who are as similar to themselves in race or in appearance as possible.
Furthermore, whether it is one's own race or a similar sub-race, it is best if the two have similar ideas, so that even if the recruited people have language barriers, they can communicate through other means.
But why is mine so bizarre, a tentacle monster? This thing doesn't even sound human! Putting aside its language and fighting ability, the more crucial question is, does it eat humans? If it doesn't eat human traffickers, won't I have to spend extra money to feed these creatures?
There was no other way; I was already in build mode, so I could only recruit them and see what happened. After thinking for a while and looking at my current Sky Island, I finally decided to build this unit's nest about ten meters to the left of the core thatched hut.
After using the God's-eye view to select his chosen location, the view returned to normal. In the distance, a flash of black light appeared, and 18 black tentacles, each about ten meters long, burst forth from the ground, dancing and waving in the air as if cheering or roaring. For some reason, Yang Fei actually felt this emotion, which made his scalp tingle.
Subsequently, the tips of the tentacles gradually gathered together, forming an airtight sphere, while the limbs of the tentacles at the bottom intertwined and solidified in place. From a distance, this living building looked like a small black tree.
Tentacle Nest (Initial): Troop Nest. You can recruit one tentacle monster for free each day. You can store ten tentacle monsters. Currently, you can store two. You can recruit an additional tentacle monster for 100 gray or 50 white magic cores.
Tentacle Nest (Upgradeable): Upgrades the building by spending 100 Green Magic Cores. The potential to recruit tentacle monsters will be comparable to that of ferocious beasts. At the same time, the additional cost will be 50 Green Magic Cores, increasing the probability of recruiting other types of tentacle monsters.
Looking at the surface of this "black little tree" that resembled a tentacle tower, Yang Fei swallowed hard, suppressed his fear, and communicated with the tentacle nest to recruit the two tentacle monsters he had stored there.
A rustling sound arose, and the crown of the small black tree slowly expanded, transforming back into 18 tentacles that spread out in all directions. Then, in the center, a small creature with a bald head, eighteen tiny tentacles beneath it, and a appearance resembling a jellyfish, slowly stood up, leaning against its tiny tentacles.
The 18 tentacles on the nest danced, as if celebrating the birth of the little guy. Then, one tentacle broke away from the group, carefully rolled the little guy down from the center of the black sapling's canopy, and gently placed it in front of Yang Fei.
