Chapter 115 Fleeing from Justice?
Chapter 115
The meal was very relaxing.
Su Wan talked more than last time, chatting about the details of the recording and mentioning Ling Wei's conversation backstage. Her tone carried a relaxed feeling that she no longer took Ling Wei seriously.
She placed a piece of steamed perch on Chen Li's plate, saying, "The fish at this restaurant are caught fresh from the river every day. Try it."
Chen Li took a bite and found the meat to be indeed tender. Dipped in the sauce, it was sweet and delicious, and he nodded in approval repeatedly.
Seeing that her recommendation of delicious food was appreciated, Su Wan was especially happy. She felt that Chen Li was not as scary as others had said. He was easygoing and easy to get along with.
"The second episode will be recorded next week, and the production team said they want to put me in the last spot."
Su Wan took a sip of warm water, her eyes crinkling slightly at the corners, and then said:
"Ling Wei's agent called the production team this morning to request a change in the order of appearance, but Chen Guodong refused outright. I heard this from Sister Hong."
"The fact that he dared to refuse shows that he's no longer afraid of the Li family causing trouble for him." Chen Li put down his chopsticks. "You said before that someone was suppressing you, but now that you're standing on this stage and outshining them, how does it feel?"
Su Wan thought for a moment, and the curve of her lips deepened slightly:
"It was more uneventful than I expected. I didn't have time to think about any of that while I was on stage. It wasn't until I finished singing that I realized I had won. After winning, there wasn't anything particularly special about it. I just felt like it was all over."
"However, I know that the reason I was able to win applause so easily is all because of you."
"So, I'd like to propose a toast to you."
Chen Li raised his glass and clinked it with hers:
"Don't drink too much if you're going to drive."
Towards the end of the meal, Su Wan went to the restroom.
When Su Wan came out of the restroom, Chen Li noticed that someone seemed to be following her intentionally or unintentionally, probably because they recognized her as a big star.
The two went downstairs to pay the bill.
The boss was a plump old man with gray hair. He clearly knew Su Wan and greeted her with a smile.
"Let me know next time you come, and I'll save some river crabs for you."
"Thank you, Uncle Zhang, I'm so lucky!"
Su Wan replied with a smile, taking out her phone to scan the QR code.
"How long has this store been open?"
Chen Li asked out of curiosity, having nothing else to do.
The old man held up three fingers and said with a proud look:
"I started working in this small restaurant with my father when I was thirteen, and it's been fifty-four years now. This used to be a small fishing village. People would come here after fishing to have a drink and relax."
"Now that life is better, people come here to reminisce about the old days, or some young people who haven't seen what it used to be like come here for something new."
Su Wan paid the bill, and the two said goodbye to the old man.
Stepping out of the private restaurant, you'll find yourself surrounded by old-style residential buildings. The alley is narrow, and the streetlights are spaced far apart, casting a dim, yellowish glow on the cobblestone pavement.
The evening breeze from the riverbank blew in from the alley entrance, carrying moisture and a slight fishy smell.
The two walked side by side toward the parking lot at the alley entrance.
When Chen Li reached the middle of the alley, his pace suddenly slowed down.
His ears caught a sound that didn't belong to the night wind—a faint metallic scraping sound coming from the shadows of the building to his right, like someone drawing a knife from its sheath.
At the same time, there was a very short breathing sound coming from behind the security door on the first floor of the residential building on the left, and the rhythm was off.
Chen Li gently pushed Su Wan's lower back, the force was light but it pushed her forward half a step, as if to remind her:
"Walk straight ahead to the alley entrance, and don't look back."
Su Wan was stunned for a moment, but her reaction was much faster than that of an ordinary person. She didn't ask why, nor did she stop and turn around to look. Instead, she quickened her pace and walked forward.
She was wearing flat shoes, her steps were steady, and her breathing was not disordered.
Chen Li stopped behind her and stepped aside to block the middle of the alleyway.
He drew the short blade from behind his waist with his right hand, pushed open the scabbard with his thumb, and the blade gleamed for a moment in the dim light of the street lamp.
Two people emerged from the shadows of the building on the right. They were dressed in dark clothes, their faces covered with black masks, and they held short knives in their hands.
A third person emerged from behind the security door on the left, holding a long-handled crowbar. He wasn't wearing a mask, revealing a pair of bloodshot eyes.
The three of them moved almost simultaneously, their footsteps clattering on the bluestone slabs as they rushed towards Chen Li and Su Wan.
Su Wan had already walked five or six steps when she heard the noise behind her and instinctively wanted to turn around.
Chen Li reminded:
Keep moving forward! Don't stop!
He was worried that it was too gory and would give her nightmares if she watched it.
His voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable sense of pressure. Su Wan paused for a moment, then quickened her pace and ran towards the brighter streetlight at the alley entrance.
The first person with a knife rushed to a position three steps away from Chen Li, raised his right hand, and thrust the knife tip toward Chen Li's chest.
Chen Li moved with incredible speed, knocking the dagger away and delivering a powerful horizontal kick.
With a bang, the man was sent flying backward, crashing into the wall and bouncing to the ground. His skull was cracked open, and blood gushed down the bluestone floor. He didn't even have the strength to struggle.
The second and third moves, no matter what they were, were meaningless in Chen Li's eyes.
Chen Li killed one person with a single blow.
There was one left, whom he beat severely, pinned against the wall, and forced to interrogate with a knife to his neck:
"Who sent you?"
The man gritted his teeth and remained silent.
Chen Li's blade tip slid from his collar to his collarbone, increasing the force, and the blade tip pierced the surface of his skin, oozing a bead of blood.
The man's Adam's apple bobbed, and he finally spoke, his voice hoarse like sandpaper scraping against cement:
"The Azure Dragon Hall... sent by General Manager Lin."
Chen Li looked at him, his gaze unchanged.
But he suspected that this statement was false. If Lin Xiao wanted to harm Su Wan, he wouldn't send three armed men with knives into such a narrow alley.
Is it possible that Lu Changgeng was behind this, using Lin Xiao's name?
Worried that others might still be surrounding Su Wan, Chen Li didn't waste any words with him. He slit Su Wan's throat with a knife and chased after him towards the alley entrance.
Chen Li walked up to Su Wan, and a question came from the police station on her phone. He took the phone from her and said into the microphone:
"Three thugs tried to kill me, and I killed them in self-defense. I wasn't injured. The address is in the alley next to the Tingchao Restaurant by the river. You can send someone to handle it."
"What? I'm staying here and have to go back with you to give a statement?"
"I'm sorry, if you have any questions, please go directly to Song Qingtong. My name is Chen Li."
He hung up the call and returned the phone to Su Wan.
Su Wan's hand trembled slightly as she took the phone, but her gaze remained steady as she nervously asked:
"Kill them all?"
Chen Li nodded and said:
"Yes, they're all dead."
Su Wan found it hard to believe:
"How dare you speak to the police like that? If we leave, wouldn't that be considered fleeing from justice?"
