Chapter 117 An Unresolved Misunderstanding

Chapter 117

No response.

He patted it again, this time with more force:

"Su Wan, you've come to the wrong room."

Su Wan's eyelashes trembled slightly, and her brows furrowed a little, like the instinctive protest of someone whose dream has been disturbed.

She didn't open her eyes, but instead shrank further under the covers. The hand that was on his waist tightened a little, her fingertips gripping the hem of his pajamas. She muttered again, "Don't make a sound."

This time he heard it clearly.

Chen Li lay back on the pillow and stared at the ceiling for a few seconds.

Moonlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, casting a thin beam of light on the white ceiling.

He reached out and pulled the blanket up to cover Su Wan's bare shoulders, then turned his head to look at her peaceful sleeping face.

Forget it.

Wait for her to wake up on her own.

He turned off the bedside lamp, lay back down in the dark, keeping in a position that avoided touching her as much as possible, and closed his eyes.

Su Wan woke up as dawn broke.

When she opened her eyes, she saw a section of a man's neck and half of his jawline, the morning light seeping in through the curtains and illuminating his silhouette.

Her pupils dilated and then contracted, and her memory rapidly rewound from a state of blankness within seconds: red wine, going upstairs, finding a room, pushing open the door, getting into bed.

She glanced down at the towel on her body, then at Chen Li's pajamas, and then slowly, very slowly, withdrew her hand from his waist.

Chen Li woke up the moment she touched her hand.

He didn't open his eyes or move. Only after she had completely withdrawn her hand did he turn his head and open his eyes, his gaze calmly falling on the tips of her reddened ears.

"You've come to the wrong room."

Su Wan's ears turned red from the tips to the entire earlobe.

She pulled the blanket up to her chin, covering half her face, leaving only her eyes visible as she looked at Chen Li, her voice hoarse, low, and urgent, as if she had just woken up:

"I drank too much yesterday and went to the wrong place. I didn't mean to. Why didn't you wake me up?"

"I called, I called twice, and you told me to be quiet."

Su Wan blinked twice, then buried her face completely under the covers.

A few seconds later, a muffled sound came from under the covers:

"Turn around."

Chen Li did as instructed.

He had his back to her and heard the rustling sound of fabric behind him.

She got out of bed, her bare feet making a soft sound on the floor, followed by the sound of the door opening and closing. Before the door closed, she uttered a sentence:

"I'll wait for you downstairs."

The door closed.

Chen Li looked at the blank wall opposite him, his lips twitched, and then he got out of bed.

Twenty minutes later, when he changed his clothes and came downstairs, Su Wan was already sitting in the living room.

She changed back into the light-colored knit sweater and jeans she wore yesterday, tied her hair up again, and wore light makeup, but there was still a trace of light pink on the tips of her ears that hadn't completely faded.

She was sitting on the edge of the sofa with a cup of hot water in her hand. When she saw Chen Li come down, her gaze lingered on him for a moment before moving away.

"There's breakfast in the kitchen. Xiaoyu came this morning and made porridge and fried eggs."

She tried to maintain her usual calm tone when she said this, but her speaking speed was a little faster than usual.

Chen Li walked to the dining table, sat down, and ladled out a bowl of porridge.

Su Wan carried her water glass to the opposite side of the dining table and sat down. She took a small sip from the rim of the glass against her lower lip, and after a while, she spoke:

"Those three people last night...you said they weren't sent by Lin Xiao."

"no."

"Who is that?"

"Lu Changgeng, the former president of Juxian Chamber of Commerce. He wants to break off my relationship with you, thinking that Lin Xiao's people hurt you, so that I will turn against Lin Xiao, and Lin Xiao will be forced to take his side."

Su Wan's fingers tightened slightly as she gripped the water glass.

"So, has he succeeded now?"

"No. Now that you're sitting here instead of lying in a hospital, his plan has failed. I'll handle the rest. You can stay here for the next few days and continue with your work as usual, but I'll have someone take you out."

Su Wan looked at him, and the morning light shone in through the French windows, casting a thin layer of gold on his shoulders.

She didn't say thank you because what happened last night and this morning went beyond what could be settled with a thank you.

She simply nodded, picked up her water glass, took another sip, then stood up, took two steps toward the kitchen, stopped, and turned to the side.

"I'll remember that the guest room door is the second one on the left tonight."

She said that and without waiting for his reply, she quickly walked into the kitchen.

Chen Li sat at the dining table, picked up a fried egg, took a bite, and the yolk oozed out and stuck to the tip of his chopsticks. He looked down at it and continued eating.

"interesting."

This is a comment on the big star Su Wan. Wouldn't it be shocking for fans to know that their idol is like a silly goose?

After finishing breakfast, Chen Li went to the tea room and sat for a while.

Su Wan came out of the kitchen not long after, holding a freshly brewed cup of tea. She paused in the passageway between the living room and the tea room, as if hesitating whether to come in.

Chen Li looked up at her, then gestured with his chin toward the prayer mat opposite him:

"sit."

Su Wan brought in tea and sat down on the futon.

She wasn't wearing shoes; her bare feet were on the bamboo mat, her toes slightly curled, as if she wasn't used to this sitting posture.

She placed the teacup on the low table, glanced around the furnishings of the tea room, and then looked back at Chen Li's face.

"I have a photoshoot for a brand this morning and a media interview this afternoon," she said. "You said someone would drive you out, when will they arrive?"

Chen Li glanced at his phone:

"Ah Kun will be here in ten minutes. He'll stay outside when you arrive at the filming location and bring you back after you're done. If anyone asks to meet you in the meantime, no matter who it is or what their reason is, please let Ah Kun know first."

Su Wan nodded, picked up her teacup, took a sip, and put it down with a very soft, crisp sound as the bottom of the cup hit the table.

"So what did you do this morning?"

"I wasn't planning on doing anything, but now I'm going to go find someone."

Su Wan did not ask who that person was.

She put down her teacup, stood up, straightened her clothes, took two steps towards the door, then stopped and turned back:

"By the way, there's still more than half a bottle of red wine left from last night. I... won't drink it tonight."

Chen Li looked up at her. She was standing at the entrance of the tea room, and the morning light shone in from behind her, giving her a fuzzy golden edge.

Her ears were no longer red, but her gaze lingered on his face for a moment before she looked away, then turned and walked towards the door.

Ah Kun arrived precisely ten minutes later.

After Su drove his car home, Chen Li returned to the teahouse and dialed Ye Qinglian's number.

"Of those three men in the alley yesterday, one of them claimed to be from the Green Dragon Gang. How's your investigation going?"
