Chapter 94

After finishing his cigarette, Chen Li stubbed it out on the lid of a roadside trash can and turned to walk towards his car.

He opened the driver's side door, and his phone rang again.

It wasn't a phone call, it was a text message. The number was unfamiliar, and the message contained only one line:

"The weather is nice today, and your table is quite nice."

Chen Li's gaze lingered on the screen for two seconds. This card was newly replaced, and only Song Qingtong, Zhao Guangzhu, Chen Jia, and Sister Hong knew about it.

The other person's tone wasn't a joke between acquaintances; "that table" clearly referred to the oval-shaped long table in the conference room where he had crossed his legs—a detail that only those present at the time could see.

He dialed back, but the line was busy. He dialed again, but the phone was off.

Chen Li placed his phone on the center console, didn't start the car immediately, leaned back in his seat, thought for a few seconds, and sent a message to Song Qingtong:

"Sun Ji's secretary called the Juxian Chamber of Commerce at 7:00 AM this morning. Who exactly did he call?"

The reply came very quickly:

"The number registered with the administration office is Lu Changgeng's landline. The person who answers is uncertain. Lu Changgeng usually has morning tea at Mingyuan during that time."

What kind of place is Mingyuan?

"Lu Changgeng's own club is located halfway up a mountain in the western suburbs. It is very private, and he usually conducts business there."

In other words, Lu Changgeng was aware of every move Sun Ji made this morning.

By the time Chen Li entered the administration building, went up to the seventh floor, and opened the conference room door, Lu Changgeng should have already received the news the moment he walked into the lobby.

Then someone sent him this text message with a new SIM card, saying, "I know what you're doing, and I know where you are."

Chen Li closed his phone screen and started the car.

I shifted gears and drove out of the parking space, glancing at the car in the rearview mirror as I merged into the traffic.

A gray minivan merged onto him from the side road after he turned the corner, following at a distance of three cars, at a leisurely pace.

He changed lanes with one hand on the steering wheel, and the other car followed suit.

Then, at the next intersection, I turned right. The other car turned right two seconds later, and its taillights flickered in the mirror.

Chen Li's lips twitched slightly.

This level of surveillance doesn't seem like Lu Changgeng's doing; it's more like Ye Zong's people were hastily dispatched, without even changing the car.

He didn't speed up to shake them off, but maintained a steady speed as he drove onto the main road leading to the suburbs. His speed was neither too fast nor too slow, and the car behind him stayed about fifty meters behind.

He dialed Ah Kun's number, and after the answer came, he only said one sentence:

"I'm heading south on Chengxi Road, and a gray minivan is following me. Have someone pick me up at the next traffic light."

The sound of a chair being moved came from Ah Kun's side:

"Understood, Mr. Chen."

Ten minutes later, Chen Li's car stopped at a red light at the intersection of Chengxi Road and Jianshe Road. The gray minivan in the rearview mirror stopped two cars behind it.

The moment the green light turned on, a black SUV suddenly sped out from the side alley, blocking the gray minivan directly in front of it, its screeching brakes piercing and ear-piercing.

The gray minivan was forced to stop, and the driver leaned out to yell at people. The SUV door had already opened, and two men in dark jackets got out and blocked the sides.

Chen Li glanced at the car one last time in the rearview mirror, stepped on the gas, and the car smoothly drove through the intersection.

Just as I entered the gate of the Bihu Longting villa area, I received a call from Ah Kun:

"Mr. Chen, one of the people following you is a major wanted criminal. We'll have to wait for the police department's investigation results to find out their identities."

Chen Li praised:

"That was a brilliant move—using someone else to do the dirty work."

Ah Kun said respectfully:

"Thank you for your praise, Mr. Chen. I will do my best."

Back to Villa No. 28.

A black sedan had appeared at the entrance, but Chen Li couldn't recognize the license plate.

He parked his car and walked into the yard. As he crossed the lawn, he saw that the living room door was open, and he could hear Chen Jia talking to someone inside, his tone carrying a polite but distant quality.

He pushed open the door and went in, and saw a middle-aged man in a dark gray suit sitting on the sofa.

The man was rather thin, with slightly graying temples. He had his hands folded on his knees, his posture as proper as a junior clerk visiting a leader.

Upon seeing Chen Li enter, he stood up and gave a slight bow.

"Mr. Chen, I apologize for the intrusion. My surname is Xu, Xu Zhihai, and I am the legal representative of Renhe Company."

As he spoke, he took a business card out of his pocket and handed it over with both hands:

"I'm here on behalf of my uncle to talk to you about Chairman Sun's matter."

Chen Li glanced at him as he took the business card.

Xu Zhihai's hands were clean, his nails were neatly trimmed, and there were no calluses on his palms; he was an office worker.

Judging from the fact that he was already sitting in the living room before Chen Li entered, the people behind him trusted him enough to send him over as a messenger.

"Your uncle is Lu Changgeng."

Chen Li placed the business card on the coffee table. Shouldn't it be his nephew? Could it be that Song Qingtong can't distinguish between a nephew and a grandnephew?

"Yes, my uncle asked me to pass on a message. He said that Sun Ji went too far and brought this situation upon himself."

Xu Zhihai sat down again, took a brown paper envelope from his briefcase, placed it on the coffee table, and pushed it towards him:

"Inside is the original stamped document of Sun Ji's signed withdrawal of the closure notice, and the resignation letter from this afternoon has already been registered at the administration office. My uncle said that no one from the Medical Association will cause any more trouble for Harmony Hospital in the future."

Chen Jia had somehow retreated to the kitchen doorway, leaning against the doorframe and watching this side, holding a half-full glass of water in her hand without drinking it, quietly serving as a background figure.

Chen Li picked up the envelope, opened it, and looked at the documents inside. He confirmed that the official seal and signature were complete, put the documents away, and then looked up at Xu Zhihai:

"I didn't expect your uncle to be so decisive. He truly has the skills of a big shot. I really like this style."

Xu Zhihai's lips curved slightly, a faint smile, as if he had rehearsed it beforehand, as he replied:

"My uncle said that Mr. Chen is a smart man, and smart people don't beat around the bush."

"The 520,000 yuan in Sunji was an account that Tiger asked his uncle to arrange before he died. His uncle didn't explain in detail what it was used for."

"But since Tiger is dead and Sunji can't cover it up anymore, consider this money as Uncle learning a lesson."

"and then?"

Chen Li countered with a question, leaning back into the sofa, his gaze never leaving his face.

"Then my uncle said he would like to invite Mr. Chen to a casual meal tomorrow night at Mingyuan Restaurant."

Xu Zhihai took out another light gray card from his briefcase and placed it on the coffee table. It was a private invitation from Mingyuan.

"My uncle also said that the current president of the Juxian Chamber of Commerce is his son. Young people sometimes act a bit hastily, and he hopes Mr. Chen won't take offense. The elders' involvement is like setting the table up again."

He nodded slightly in acknowledgment, then turned and left.

The footsteps faded into the distance on the stone path in the courtyard, followed by the sound of a car engine starting and driving away.

The living room fell silent again.

Chen Jia carried her water glass to the sofa, sat down next to the armrest, and turned to look at him:

"Who is this person? He looks refined and gentle, but every word he speaks is sharp and witty."

"Lu Changgeng's nephew, he's here to deliver the message." Chen Li flipped the invitation over, looked at it, and put it in his shirt pocket. "He's treating everyone to dinner tomorrow night."

"Are you planning to go?" Chen Jia asked with some concern.
