Even if I'm a useless bum at Whampoa Military Academy, I'll be invincible in the War of Re

Chapter 318: The reconnaissance unit takes action and intercepts the Japanese supply convoy.

"Commander, the Japanese convoy has thirty-seven trucks, with two tanks leading the way. Eight of the trucks are filled with infantrymen, and with the soldiers escorting the other vehicles, it's at least an infantry company."

Battalion Commander Leng Feng leaned close to Xiao Jianyun and reported that after the reconnaissance battalion was upgraded to a regiment, it would have two reconnaissance battalions and one special service battalion under its command.

This was a unique organizational structure personally devised by Zhao Yunwen. The reconnaissance brigade was similar in nature to the previous one, with a special operations battalion structure, directly commanding four companies, each with more than 150 people.

The special operations battalion consisted of an artillery company, a supply company, an infantry company, and a communications platoon, totaling over 600 personnel, and operated in coordination with the reconnaissance battalion.

The regiment has more than 1300 personnel, equipped with 6 82mm mortars, 4 Type 92 infantry guns, 18 rocket launchers, more than 60 mules and horses, 3 radios, and carries a month's worth of supplies, enabling it to operate independently for extended periods.

The core mission of the reconnaissance regiment was to harass the Japanese supply lines. After tracking the movements of the Japanese convoy, Xiao Jianyun set up an ambush on the Huangtugang Heights in Liujiazhuang, ready to destroy the Japanese convoy.

Liujiazhuang is located southwest of Zhengkai Highway. It is an ordinary village with several hundred people. The loess hill outside the village is two to three meters higher than the surrounding area and is planted with corn and sorghum, which is perfect for hiding.

The special operations battalion played the leading role in this ambush, while the reconnaissance battalion cleaned up the mess. The rocket launcher teams were ambushed in the fields on both sides of the road, about 100 meters apart, which is the optimal range for rocket launchers.

Xiao Jianyun snorted coldly:

"We can't let this easy prey slip through our fingers! Notify the artillery company to use rocket launchers to take out the 'Iron Turtle' and the lead vehicle, blocking the convoy. The rest, proceed according to plan!"

Leng Feng accepted the order and left, while Xiao Jianyun continued to observe through his binoculars. With a reconnaissance regiment ambush the Japanese supply train, he had a firm grip on the situation, and his task was to minimize casualties as much as possible.

On the highway, the Japanese tanks were swaying along. Because it was in the rear, there had been no incidents of supply lines being harassed, so they were not very vigilant.

The chariot moved through an empty field without stopping or noticing anything unusual in its surroundings.

The lead trucks were filled with Japanese soldiers who served as guards. Without exception, two machine guns were mounted on the roof of each truck, guarding both sides.

The middle section consisted of vehicles fully loaded with supplies, each with four Japanese soldiers escorting it. The last two vehicles were also filled with Japanese soldiers.

The journey was tedious, so the Japanese soldiers started singing "The Gentleman's Song." The song carried far and wide, bringing a great sense of relaxation, and the officer in charge didn't stop them.

Several rockets shot out of the fields without warning, heading straight for the two bean-carrying tanks and the lead vehicle. This was the key target and the start of the attack, and was under the control of the artillery company commander.

The bean-shaped tanks were instantly detonated, billowing thick smoke. On average, each tank was hit by three or four high-explosive shells, and even a miracle couldn't save them.

The lead vehicle was also hit by three rockets. The entire truck overturned under the shockwave and inertia, and the Japanese soldiers on it were thrown out like sacks and then slammed heavily to the ground, their internal organs spilling out.

The first wave of attack went better than expected. All three targets were destroyed, the road was blocked, other vehicles braked suddenly, and some even collided with each other, creating chaos.

The second wave of attacks followed immediately, carried out by the rocket launcher platoon, and was launched in three phases.

The head section had twelve rocket launcher groups, which focused their fire on the three trucks full of Japanese soldiers. The middle section had six rocket launcher groups, which concentrated their fire to destroy the two trucks. The rear section was attacked by infantry artillery.

These were all pre-arranged tasks: strike at the head, cut off the tail, pull the waist, and cut off the enemy. No matter how the Japanese arranged their marching formations, this tactic could defeat everything.

The actual combat proved to be surprisingly effective. Almost all of the troop carriers were brought down, the escort squadron suffered nearly half its casualties, and the entire convoy was paralyzed, becoming lambs to the slaughter.

Then three signal flares pierced the sky, and the ambushers on both flanks emerged, unleashing a fierce barrage of fire from thirty light and heavy machine guns, inflicting heavy casualties on the panicked Japanese soldiers.

Snipers targeted key objectives, and any remaining Japanese machine guns that peeked out were instantly killed, leaving the remaining Japanese soldiers with no chance to fight back.

This ambush was textbook perfect. The escort squadron played almost no role; officers and machine gunners were all sniped. They were shot at head-on from beginning to end, and most of the guards didn't even have a chance to fire a shot.

Seeing that the situation was under control, Xiao Jianyun decisively ordered a charge. Hundreds of ambushing soldiers rushed out of the fields and began clearing the area.

They worked in groups of three, using submachine guns and rifles in coordination, with snipers providing long-range suppression, giving the Japanese no chance to turn the tide.

The company commander survived to the end by sheer luck, but he was stunned by the airtight tactics of the ambush.

"Baka yarou! It's a Chinese! A despicable Chinese person launched a sneak attack!"

The company commander tried to gather the remaining soldiers, but a burst of submachine gun fire swept through, instantly turning them into sieves.

The infantry company and reconnaissance battalion responsible for the assault successfully completed their mission, and all the remaining Japanese soldiers were wiped out.

The second reconnaissance battalion was responsible for perimeter security, while the others quickly cleared the battlefield and removed the destroyed vehicles from the main road.

The results were quickly tallied, and the special operations battalion commander excitedly came to report:

"Commander, we've struck it rich! A full 31 truckloads of supplies, 237 Japanese guards and drivers killed, 2 tanks and 8 trucks destroyed, more than 170 rifles and pistols captured, 29 intact trucks, and a radio."

There are too many supplies to inventory, including large quantities of artillery shells, bullets, grenades, food, and medicine. What should we do?

Xiao Jianyun hadn't expected to gain so much. These Japanese weapons and ammunition could replenish the troops' supplies, and food and medicine were in high demand. All he needed to do was get away from the roads and railways.

Thinking of this, Xiao Jianyun had an idea and said loudly:

"Distribute the supplies from the destroyed vehicles evenly to the other vehicles, take the spoils with you, and move the convoy along side roads to groves and villages to hide it."

Heading south, they will detour across the river to deliver the supplies back to headquarters. The First Reconnaissance Battalion will remain behind to continue monitoring the Japanese.

The special operations battalion commander accepted the order and left. What Xiao Jianyun said seemed easy, but in reality, it was fraught with danger. He needed to report to Zhao Yunwen and then receive the secret plan.

After receiving Xiao Jianyun's report, Zhao Yunwen quickly formulated a corresponding transfer plan and marching route for him, and arranged for the Independent Regiment, which was on guard in the south, to provide support.

After reading the brilliant plan, Xiao Jianyun ordered his men to change into the Japanese military uniforms they carried with them and drive the Japanese transport truck south in a swaggering manner.

They bypassed the Fifth and Sixteenth Divisions, then turned west, maneuvering and weaving right under the noses of the Japanese. With the optimal route planned on the minimap, they arrived safely at the Independent Regiment's defense zone and handed over the supplies to the Independent Regiment, all in just one day and one night.

The supply convoy was under the command of the Pengcheng garrison and was originally intended for the 5th and 16th Divisions, but it lost contact.

Radio calls went unanswered, and reconnaissance planes were dispatched to search along the Zhengkai Highway, but no trace was found. They were extremely anxious.

This incident shocked the North China Area Army Command, indicating that the rear was no longer peaceful and that a strong force had to be dispatched to clear out the enemy and ensure the safety of the supply lines.

The Japanese troops were in complete chaos, and Zhao Yunwen, not content with the chaos, ordered the main force of the reconnaissance regiment to return to the vicinity of the Longhai Railway to await orders.

Soon the Japanese discovered several abandoned trucks left by the reconnaissance team, as well as a large number of Japanese corpses. Enraged, they sent men to search for the convoy and the attackers, causing chaos and confusion.

At the Fifth Division headquarters, Itagaki Seishiro frowned deeply, while his chief of staff stood by, barely daring to breathe.

Seishiro Itagaki, known as the "Courage of the Empire," swept across North China with half a division at the beginning of the war, earning a formidable reputation. However, he unexpectedly suffered a series of setbacks east of Linyi, Lanfeng, Kaifeng, and Zhengxian.

The Jialu River defense line had already caused him to lose face, and now his supplies had been intercepted. All of this was related to one person, who seemed to have become his nemesis.

"Baka yarou, what kind of person is Zhao Yunwen?! A good-for-nothing from Huangpu Military Academy, how could he be transformed overnight?"

Was he hiding his true abilities, or had he suddenly had a breakthrough?
