Even if I'm a useless bum at Whampoa Military Academy, I'll be invincible in the War of Re

Chapter 330: Night Battle, Another Crushing of the Itagaki Division

"Brothers, beat them to a pulp!"

Zhang Yaoda fired his gun while shouting instructions. Grassroots commanders need to shout and yell more; a silent person can't command a battle.

Luo Guangxu was the complete opposite; he remained silent as a mountain, showing no emotion whatsoever towards the Japanese soldiers who fell under his guns, whom he saw as no different from beasts.

The Japanese owe him too much blood debt; the entire class is waiting for him to avenge them. It wouldn't be unreasonable for one to be exchanged for ten.

Bullets sprayed out like a flowing stream, and in a short time he had emptied half of the ammunition belt. In the instant the bolt jammed, Luo Guangxu shouted at the top of his lungs:

"Bullets, give me bullets, hurry up!"

The assistant gunner hurriedly and deftly loaded the ammunition belt in his hand. He had practiced this action countless times and could do it with his eyes closed without making a mistake. He couldn't afford to make a mistake, as time was of the essence.

Luo Guangxu's machine gun once again spewed out long tongues of fire, and Japanese soldiers fell one after another wherever it passed. His assistant gunner kept providing him with battlefield information and confirming the results of the battle.

Under the guidance of his assistant gunner, Luo Guangxu's machine gun became the Japanese devils' nightmare. The number of Japanese soldiers who died under his gun was countless, but he didn't care.

It's just a number, no matter how you look at it.

Private First Class Iguchi had almost lost all his comrades, and it was extremely fortunate that he had survived until now; the defenders' firepower had exceeded his expectations.

We can't get through it, we simply can't get through it!

Ignoring the foul-smelling muddy water, he lay face down on the ground, bullets whizzing overhead, too terrified to even lift his head.

"You bunch of useless cowards! Charge now, or you're dead!"

The company commander was driving them forward like a death knell. Private First Class Iguchi initially pretended not to hear, but after witnessing the company commander shoot down two cowards in succession, he had no choice but to grit his teeth, get up from the mud, and continue charging through the hail of bullets.

Private First Class Iguchi finally rushed onto the riverbank and began to face the defending troops directly.

Zhang Yaoda, who was opposite him, launched another counterattack, rushing out of the trench to meet the Japanese soldiers, and the two sides immediately engaged in a brutal hand-to-hand battle.

Private First Class Iguchi was overjoyed. Assassination was his forte, and he could finally avenge his friend.

"Go to hell!"

Private First Class Iguchi thrust his bayonet fiercely into a garrison corporal, who did not dodge but instinctively pulled the trigger.

Several submachine gun bullets pierced his chest, leaving it a bloody mess. Using submachine guns in bayonet fighting was just too much.

Private First Class Iguchi's strength vanished like flowing water, and his vision became blurred.

He felt as if he had returned to his hometown of Hiroshima, where there were rows of cherry blossom trees and his sister was waving to him from under them.

"What a nice view!"

Private First Class Iguchi collapsed heavily, his friend's urn rolling to the ground as he carried it. He couldn't care less about that now; his body was still soaking in the stinking puddle, and he didn't know when someone would collect it.

The corporal spat at him with disgust and then lunged at another Japanese soldier.

The Japanese were horrified to discover that the defending troops were growing in number and momentum, and the battle line was quickly stabilized and slowly pushed eastward.

In the chaos of battle, the defenders' assault rifles proved incredibly effective. A skilled assassin who had been trained for several years was easily killed by a new recruit with no assassination experience, rendering the so-called assassination technique useless.

The defenders were divided into groups of three, with a submachine gun or automatic rifle in front and two riflemen behind to protect the flanks. The submachine gunners only needed to spray bullets at the Japanese soldiers.

Short bursts of three to five rounds were used, while long bursts were used when the Japanese soldiers were grouped together. A combat team equipped with automatic weapons could completely defeat half a squad of Japanese soldiers in an assassination.

Each platoon of the defending troops had three such combat teams, giving them a significant advantage in platoon-level combat. Both the 645th and 646th Regiments were based on the Training Corps and were not afraid of the Japanese in any way.

With the addition of the reserve 650th Regiment, the balance of victory completely tipped in favor of the 323rd Division. The Japanese were driven back in disarray, with countless soldiers trampled to death in the ensuing chaos.

The Japanese troops who launched the night attack were once again driven back into the river. This time, the 323rd Division did not stop there but launched a full-scale counterattack, chasing the Japanese across the Jinshui River.

The Sakamoto Brigade suffered a crushing defeat, losing all will to fight and scrambling to escape, with no one willing to stay behind to cover their retreat.

The 323rd Division, with thousands of soldiers, pursued and killed their way through the enemy lines, driving the fleeing troops deep into the enemy camp.

Sakamoto Jun did not expect to be pushed back. The number of troops left behind was not large, and they could not stop the onslaught of the fleeing soldiers. They could only abandon supplies and heavy equipment and retreat towards the Kunisaki Brigade and Division Headquarters.

At the Fifth Division headquarters, Itagaki Seishiro had lost his composure and was roaring at the top of his lungs:

"Baka yarou, hold on, you have to hold on!"

"Useless! A bunch of useless trash! You've completely disgraced the Steel Army!"

"Telegram to Kunisaki-kun: Under no circumstances should the routed soldiers be allowed to break through the lines! Kill them all!"

Chief of Staff Takeshi Sakurada had never seen Seishiro Itagaki so out of control. The Sakamoto Brigade was the unit that made him famous, and it had been utterly routed by the Chinese Tiger Army.

In order to prevent the division headquarters from being disrupted, he did not hesitate to order the Kunisaki Brigade to shoot down the fleeing soldiers.

Sakurada Takeshi tried to dissuade him:

"Division Commander, these are all elite warriors of the Empire. Should we send someone to guide them to evacuate to the flanks?"

"Baka yarou, it's too late. It's pitch black, and the fleeing soldiers have lost their minds. They'll just charge at our position without thinking."

This is a Chinese conspiracy! Execute the orders!

Sakurada Takeshi dared not be a waste any longer, and slung his military sword over his shoulder and strode away.

Seishiro Itagaki saw things clearly: the only way to survive was to cut off the tail and hold the division's main camp, otherwise the entire division would be wiped out.

From the outer perimeter of the Kunisaki Brigade, a tide of fleeing soldiers surged in, densely packed like a herd of wildebeest, threatening to breach the defensive line at any moment.

Kunisaki Toru, his face ashen, stared at the approaching routs of soldiers, suppressing his last shred of compassion. His voice was icy, as if it came from hell:

"Fire!"

The pre-positioned machine gun array spewed out tongues of fire, sweeping down rows of fleeing soldiers without mercy.

With obstacles ahead and pursuers behind, the routed soldiers were on the verge of death. It was Sakamoto Jun who was smart and led the way to escape to the left flank.

Other Japanese soldiers followed suit. With no way forward, they had to split into two groups on either side and finally found an exit.

When the commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 645th Regiment, who was leading the charge, saw the bursts of gunfire ahead, he knew there was no chance. The Japanese were ruthless not only to the Chinese, but also to their own people.

He promptly halted the pursuit and switched to defense on the spot;

The troops that followed also stopped one after another. Under the command of their officers, they cleaned up the battlefield and scavenged the equipment and supplies left behind by the Japanese. They actually managed to pick up quite a few good things.

The Sakamoto Brigade was routed so quickly that its main camp was scattered. In the rush, the brigade headquarters only took some important documents with it. Artillery, supplies, and even wounded soldiers from the field hospital were abandoned.

When Company Commander Zhang Yaoda led his soldiers to the field hospital, the medical staff inside screamed in terror, and some even tried to resist.

Doctor Yoshii Hatano bravely protested in Chinese:

"We are medical personnel and wounded soldiers, protected by international law. You are not allowed to enter!"

Zhang Yaoda coldly shouted:

"You didn't say that in Nanjing. Why didn't you mention international law then?"

After Zhang Yaoda finished speaking, he led his men into the hospital, but Yoshii Hatano and more than a dozen medical staff tried to stop them and protect the wounded.

Zhang Yaoda completely lost his patience and said righteously and sternly:

"You have been captured. We need to separate the medical staff from the wounded. Please cooperate."

Yoshii Hatano seemed to have guessed what Zhang Yaoda was going to do, and relying on her status as a medical worker, she desperately tried to stop him.

Zhang Yaoda had lost his patience. He had crawled out of piles of corpses in Jinling City. A cold glint flashed in his eyes, and he loudly ordered:

"These Japanese devils ambushed us, wipe them out!"

A flicker of panic crossed Yoshii Hatano's eyes as she protested loudly:

"You can't kill people, we are medical staff, we are prisoners—"

Gunshots rang out, and Yoshii Hatano stared in disbelief at Zhang Yaoda, whose gun was still emitting wisps of smoke.

When the other medical staff saw that Zhang Yaoda had actually fired a shot, they screamed and ran away in terror. The brothers from the Second Company, expressionless, opened fire and killed them all.

They then massacred the Third Field Hospital, killing more than 300 wounded soldiers who intended to die with them.

Zhang Yaoda casually shoved a grenade into Hatano's hand, and the others followed suit, some shoving grenades into the wounded, others shoving bayonets.

After clearing the scene, Zhang Yaoda reported back to the regimental commander, Li Xikai, who merely glanced at him and impatiently said:

"What a bunch of stubborn fools, bury them!"

A major excitedly came over to report:

"Commander, we're rich! We're rich!"
