At the 65th Regiment headquarters, the two commanders were in so much pain that their facial muscles were contorted. Although they had requested artillery retaliation, it was impossible for the Okamoto Battalion to return.

This was a third of the 65th Regiment's strength, and not a single one returned; they vanished without a trace, with only occasional noises heard.

"You idiot! Okamoto, you piece of trash, how did you even fight a war?!"

"An entire battalion of warriors, even if it were more than nine hundred pigs, couldn't have been wiped out by the Chinese in such a short time! When did the Imperial Army become so easily defeated?!"

The senior staff officer dared not speak. Who could have imagined such an outcome? The feint attack on Fujinshan resulted in only thirty casualties, while the surprise attack on Hill 203 was a complete annihilation.

"Baka yarou, you're mute! What do we do now?"

The two teams had lost their composure, and their three consecutive attacks ended in failure. The entire team had suffered more than half of its casualties.

This is not just a case of more than half the troops being killed or wounded; it's a case of the 65th Regiment being killed in action and seriously wounded, rendering it incapable of fighting.

The senior staff officer then forced himself to speak:

"Commander, the 65th Regiment is exhausted. Fujinshan is simply not a regiment that can be taken. Please request tactical guidance from the division headquarters!"

"You idiot! You're boosting the morale of the Chinese while diminishing our own! The Two-Cornered Regiment must get up wherever they fall."

The two business partners were clearly unwilling to be sidelined, but they had to face the harsh reality. A senior staff officer reminded them:

"Commander, the entire regiment has only a little over 1700 men left, and many of them are non-combatants."

Even if we want to save face, we need to replenish our ranks first; the division headquarters still has a considerable number of replacement soldiers.

The two officers' expressions improved slightly. Replenishing their ranks was the top priority; otherwise, they couldn't accomplish anything with these remnants.

After figuring this out, the two students deflated like a punctured balloon.

"Send a telegram to the division headquarters requesting tactical guidance!"

At the 71st Army headquarters on Fujinshan Mountain, Song Yingguo, who had just dozed off after being tormented by the Japanese all night, was greeted by Chief of Staff Chen Sunong bursting in excitedly, his voice preceding his arrival:

"Commander, we've figured it out! The Japanese are using a feint attack on Fujinshan, but in reality, they're launching a surprise attack on the Tiger Army's artillery positions."

Fortunately, they were well-prepared. After a fierce battle in the middle of the night, they annihilated the invading enemy, an entire battalion of over 900 men, and captured two Type 92 infantry guns, one of which was destroyed that day.

Song Yingguo could hardly believe his ears. Only after receiving confirmation from Chen Sunong did he exclaim in astonishment:

"I had always heard that Brother Yunwen was amazing. The outside world called the Tiger Army the strongest army in the world, but I was still a little unconvinced. I thought they were just well-equipped."

Now it seems we were so wrong. It wasn't that we overestimated Yunwen and the Tiger Army, but rather that we seriously underestimated them!

"In such a short time, he wiped out an entire battalion, as easily as cutting melons and vegetables. He truly deserves to be called the top student of Whampoa Military Academy; I am far inferior to him."

Song Yingguo was usually a proud and arrogant person. When Zhao Yunwen was just the head of the security regiment, he was already the lieutenant general and commander of the German-equipped division, and the commander of the 71st Army. He was considered to be in the first tier among the first batch of graduates.

Who could have imagined that in just one year, Zhao Yunwen would make a complete turnaround, transforming from a useless student at Whampoa Military Academy into the most recognized leader of the Four Outstanding Talents?

Chen Sunong couldn't help but say:

"It seems that Senior Zhao saw through the Japanese devils' tricks long ago, anticipated the enemy's moves, and set up a trap in advance for the prey to enter. This kind of mind is beyond the reach of ordinary people."

With such strong reinforcements, the battle for Fujinshan will be much easier for my 71st Army.

Song Yingguo nodded and said:

"It seems I still need to consult Brother Yunwen again, and draft a congratulatory telegram!"

Because the 65th Regiment had suffered heavy losses, the Japanese were very well-behaved throughout the morning and did not launch any new attacks. This was the third day of the Battle of Fujinsan, and both sides were probing each other more.

The 36th Division worked quickly to restore fortifications, replenish supplies, and evacuate the wounded, while the 88th Division on the right flank was also preparing for battle.

As one of the earliest three German-equipped divisions, after being decimated in the Battle of Nanjing, it was as if its soul had been ripped out, losing its magic and thus withdrawing from the ranks of front-line elite troops.

During the Battle of Lanfeng, Division Commander Long Muhang fled before the battle even began, abandoning Lanfeng City. He was eventually executed by order of Chiang Kai-shek, becoming the first high-ranking officer who graduated from the Whampoa Military Academy to be killed since the start of the War of Resistance.

The execution of the division commander was an absolute disgrace to the 88th Division. After taking over as division commander, Zhong Bin was determined to turn the tide.

For the first three days, the Japanese focused their attacks on the front, with almost no impact on the right flank. But Zhong Song knew that once the front was blocked, they would definitely turn to the flanks, at which point the 88th Division would be able to turn the tide.

Chief of Staff Yang Wenchuan, while accompanying Zhong Bin on an inspection of the position, said:

"Senior, I heard that the Japanese launched a night attack on the Tiger Army's artillery position yesterday, but the attack failed and they were wiped out by Crazy Qiu. More than 900 of them were killed, but they still managed to show off."

Yang Wenquan was a graduate of the second cohort and a classmate of Qiu Fengzi. They knew each other well, and his words carried a hint of sourness.

Zhong Bin graduated from the first class of the Whampoa Military Academy and was a classmate of Zhao Yunwen. Long before the Battle of Shanghai, he was already the major general cadet commander of the Central Military Academy.

He also wanted to make a name for himself after taking over as the lieutenant general commander of the 88th Division, believing that the battlefield was the only place to achieve great things!

"Brother Wenquan, Brother Yunwen is the number one warrior in your Civil Engineering Department, and his reputation has surpassed that of Commander Luo."

During the Battle of Nanjing, Qiu Fengzi was only a colonel chief of staff. After following Zhao Yunwen, his career rose rapidly, and he became a lieutenant general and division commander.

Are you interested in seeking a future in the Tiger Legion?

Yang Wenquan wanted to go, but he didn't have the connections. All the positions above division commander in the Tiger Army were already taken, so he could only wait for an opportunity while he was still the division chief of staff.

"Senior is joking. The division commanders around Commander Zhao are all people who followed him in the security regiment in his early years. There is no place for me."

Zhong Bin was just testing the waters with words, patting Yang Wenchuan on the shoulder and saying:

"Fu Jinshan might be an opportunity. Brother Wenquan, you are a man of talent who once served as the principal's aide. As long as we win this battle and make some moves, it shouldn't be difficult to fill the vacancy of lieutenant general and division commander."

Chung Bin himself only filled the vacancy in June, so it would be extremely difficult for Yang Wenchuan to skip the deputy division commander resume and be promoted directly to division commander.

Yang Wenchuan did consider using Chen Cixiu's connections to join the Tiger Army. After all, they were both from the Civil Engineering faction, so it shouldn't be difficult for him to become a deputy division commander, but forget about becoming a division commander.

As the two were chatting idly, the rumble of an engine roared from the horizon. Yang Wenchuan's face changed drastically, and he said in terror:

"Commander, enemy planes! It's dangerous here, get back to command immediately!"

Zhong Bin coldly shouted:

"What's the panic? He can't possibly blow me up!"

Yang Wenchuan dared not hesitate and pulled him towards the tunnel where the command post was located.

Before long, the aircraft flew over Fujin Mountain and dropped a series of bombs. The right flank positions where the 88th Division was located were not spared either. It seemed that the Japanese bombing was mainly focused on the right flank.

Zhong Bin was not annoyed at all; on the contrary, he keenly sensed an opportunity and excitedly gave the order:

"The Japanese are probably going to break through from the right flank. Tell the brothers to get ready; the time has come to avenge our defeat!"

Zhong Bin considered the Lanfeng incident a disgrace. If they couldn't turn the tide, the future of these senior generals would be bleak.

The Japanese bombing caused great damage to the 88th Division's fortifications. Sections of trenches were destroyed, and many brothers never got up again. There were many casualties.

At the 264th Brigade's position, Major General Liao Lingqi, the brigade commander, shook off the loose dirt from his clothes and roared:

"The Japanese are about to launch a ground offensive! Prepare for battle!"

Liao Lingqi was one of the few remaining officers of regimental rank or above from the 88th Division after the Battle of Yuhuatai. He had participated in the Battle of Shanghai and had extensive combat experience.

He guessed, purely by instinct, that the Japanese were about to attack the right flank, and immediately ordered his troops to engage.

Not long after Liao Lingqi's order was relayed, a large number of Japanese infantrymen surged forward, skipping even the artillery barrage, clearly intending to catch the 88th Division off guard.

The 527th Regiment was the first to engage the Japanese, followed by the 528th Regiment, and the sound of gunfire erupted.

The 88th Division consisted almost entirely of newly recruited soldiers, but its officers were veterans who had participated in the Battle of Shanghai and the Battle of Nanjing, possessing rich combat experience and high tactical skills.

Under the command and orders of the officers, the 264th Brigade quickly halted the Japanese offensive and stabilized the situation.

The 104th Regiment, another regiment of the Yamada Brigade attacking the 88th Division's position, was full of confidence. Colonel Kinji Satomi, the regimental commander, had already obtained intelligence and knew that the defenders were a group of new recruits.

He had hoped to break through the 88th Division's defenses in one fell swoop by using aerial bombardment, but the result greatly disappointed him, and he angrily cursed:

"A bunch of useless trash! Fire the cannons and kill the Chinese!"

The 104th Regiment's artillery group immediately opened fire on the 88th Division, and thick smoke billowed from the position. The defending soldiers suffered heavy casualties, and the Japanese infantry took the opportunity to launch a fierce attack, causing the 88th Division's defense line to weaken.
