At 1 p.m. local time, the coffee shop downstairs in an office building in downtown Los Angeles was packed with people.

The aroma of coffee beans mingled with the scent of croissant butter, floating in the air.

Jiang Wan sat by the window, replying to messages with her head down. A strand of long hair fell down from behind her ear, and Lu Jingshi naturally helped her tuck it back up.

Sensing his movement, Jiang Wan looked up and found that Lu Jingshi had been staring at her.

"You're much happier after you came out."

Jiang Wan paused, unsure how to respond.

Everything in the country is a responsibility she can't shake off; she can't ignore it.

Once she leaves that environment, whether she forgets it subconsciously or ignores it intentionally, she can temporarily let go of it and no longer be overwhelmed by those things.

Not only him, but even Lu Jingshi seems to have changed a bit.

The two of them pretended that none of those things existed, as if they were tacitly acknowledging each other.

Jiang Wan was silent for a moment, then asked, "What did you do today? Did it go smoothly?"

Lu Jingshi's eyes flickered: "Some private matters, nothing important."

Seeing that he was unwilling to say more, Jiang Wan did not press him further.

Just then, someone pushed open the door and came in. A beautiful woman with brown skin and wavy hair looked around and then walked straight towards them in high heels.

"Hi, guy, Lao Lu!"

The brown-skinned beauty excitedly hugged Lu Jingshi, and her eyes lit up instantly when she glanced at Jiang Wan.

"Hello, I'm Lao Lu's friend. You can call me Alena. You're so beautiful."

Jiang Wan thanked her politely, "You're very beautiful too. I really like your figure. Just call me Jiang Wan."

"Jiang Wan?" Alena sat down opposite the two, repeatedly muttering the name. "My God, I remember who you are!"

"You're the one who made Lao Lu cry and shout, 'Why did you abandon me?' after he got drunk at the party?"

Lu Jingshi's face darkened instantly. He turned to Jiang Wan and earnestly explained, "I didn't cry."

Then, looking at the person opposite with disdain, she said, "Haven't seen you for a year, what happened to you, you look like a foreign devil?"

"This is the current beauty trend. I specifically went to get a tan, and this big butt is what Americans like. You don't know anything about it."

Alena glared at him. "If you say that again, I'll tell everyone that you've been secretly following other people's accounts."

This was the first time Jiang Wan had seen Lu Jingshi suffer a setback, and she had expected him to fly into a rage.

Unexpectedly, he suppressed his anger and didn't say a word in rebuttal, even though his face was flushed with anger.

"You now..."

Alena's gossipy gaze swept back and forth between the two of them.

"Director Lu is now my superior, my former superior. I've been suspended from my duties," Jiang Wan explained with a wry smile.

"I see. Okay, let's get down to business. The couple that Lao Lu asked you to check for me did indeed apply for a loan with our company and are now my clients."

"However, I've already made an excuse to end this. Now, can you tell me what happened to him?"

Jiang Wan spoke in a low voice, recounting the whole story.

Alena's expression grew increasingly serious as she listened. When she heard Lin Yue's live stream, she trembled slightly and cursed through gritted teeth.

"How could he deserve to die? Didn't you see how obsequious they were to these foreigners?"

She took a piece of paper out of her bag, pushed it over, and showed it to me. It had an address written on it.

"When he heard that my review process had been interrupted, he asked me to meet him here tomorrow to resubmit my materials."

Jiang Wan gratefully put away the paper and decided to meet the in-laws the next day.

The three chatted for a while longer, and Jiang Wan invited her to have dinner together, but Alena declined with a smile.

"My boyfriend and I are going to see the opera, let's make it another time. Oh, he's here."

Jiang Wan casually turned her head, but the moment she saw the person who had come, she was as if struck by lightning, and she stood there dumbfounded.

All the sounds around me seemed to be muffled and indistinct, as if viewed through a thick layer of frosted glass.

The man, who appeared to be of Chinese descent, had clearly seen her as well, and covered his head in surprise.

"Wow, Jiang Wan! What a coincidence! How are you doing since returning to China?"

Jiang Wan nodded stiffly, "Everything is fine."

Alena looked at the two of them in surprise.

"You know each other? Amazing! This is my high school classmate, Lao Lu, and his...assistant. Lao Lu, this is my boyfriend, Eric, a doctor."

Lu Jingshi's gaze suddenly froze: "Eric? The doctor?"

He suddenly remembered the information Shen Juan had found for him before.

Eric is Jiang Wan's doctor in the United States!

He suppressed the turmoil in his heart and calmly extended his hand: "Hello, I am Lu Jingshi."

Eric laughed heartily: "What a small world! I know you. You're Fang Tian's fiancé, right? She posted photos of your vacation on Instagram."

After he finished speaking, the other three people fell silent, while he alone remained cheerful.

"Didn't Fang Tian come? I haven't seen her since graduating from high school. I heard you two are getting engaged soon. She was asking me last week where would be a good place for your honeymoon."

Alena nudged him in the chest with her elbow, silencing him.

"Jiang Wan, don't take it to heart that he's a bit slow. It's almost time, we should go now. Don't forget about tomorrow."

She shoved Eric to his feet, but he glanced at his watch.

"Isn't it still early? I haven't seen Jiang Wan in a long time, and I wanted to ask about her health."

"Don't you have contact information? How can you talk about this with so many people around? Don't expose other people's privacy, let's go!"

Eric suddenly realized and quickly stood up: "Jiang Wan, remember to come see me before you go back to China. I'll be going now."

The two left in a hurry.

Jiang Wan and Lu Jingshi were both preoccupied with their own thoughts and remained silent, neither speaking first.

Finally, Jiang Wan's phone ringing broke the deadlock.

Gu Yang's name flashed on the screen, and Jiang Wan pressed the answer button.

"Hey, Gu Yang."

Even through the microphone, Gu Yang's voice still betrayed his worry and disappointment.

"Wanwan, why did you go to LA by yourself without telling me? I was planning to go back with you."

There was a pause on the other end of the phone before the voice continued, "Then remember to go to the hospital for another checkup, just in case it really becomes a chronic condition."

The distance wasn't far, and Gu Yang's words reached Lu Jingshi's ears.

His hand on the table slowly tightened, his knuckles turning a pale white from restraint.

Jiang Wan didn't want to say much, so she gave a few perfunctory replies and hung up the phone.

"I can go with you."

Jiang Wan instinctively refused: "No need, I'm used to being alone."

Lu Jingshi's eyes darkened slightly, and a layer of heartache crept into his gaze.
