From rejecting the beautiful female CEO to becoming extremely powerful

Chapter 173 The Year the Nightingale Disappeared

Ning Shuang took the teacup, glanced at the tea inside, and then reopened the black folder.

Han Yun stood to the side, holding a recording device in her hand.

She originally thought Ning Shuang would continue to press Shen Luoyan and Feng Qianyi about their relationship, but to her surprise, Ning Shuang only turned to the last page, picked up a pen, and signed her name.

"Proceed with the Nanwan Old Port project according to this plan."

Ning Shuang put down her pen and pointed to the payment milestone.

"Every transaction must be recorded. Anyone who dares to tamper with it will be investigated thoroughly."

Lu Yunzhou reached out and took back the document, his gaze falling on the signature.

Thanks.

Ning Shuang closed the pen cap, her face showing no extra expression.

"Thanks for the process, don't thank me."

After she finished speaking, she got up and left.

Han Yun packed up the equipment, took the documents, and followed them out.

Ye Zhiwei stood by the door with a tea tray in hand, her gaze following Ning Shuang's back as she turned the cup lid halfway around in her hand.

She handed the tea tray to the front desk and then quickly followed.

The elevator went down to B2.

Ning Shuang stepped out of the elevator and walked straight to her parking space.

Han Yun received a call from the project department and stood at the elevator entrance to check the receipt.

The only sounds in the garage were the tires rolling over the ground and Ye Zhiwei's approaching footsteps.

Ning Shuang pressed the car key, and the car lights came on.

She had just opened the car door when the elevator doors behind her began to close.

Ye Zhiwei rushed to the side and pressed the emergency brake button.

The red warning light came on, and the elevator door was stuck in a half-open state.

Ning Shuang turned around.

Ye Zhiwei took an old nameplate out of her coat pocket and slammed it down at her feet.

The metal plate hit the ground, rolled twice, and came to rest next to Ning Shuang's shoes.

The nameplate was worn and faded, and only half of the number remained.

Ning Shuang looked down at it, her hand on the car door frozen in mid-air.

Ye Zhiwei took a few steps closer, her chest heaving violently.

Do you still recognize me?

"When we evacuated back then, you changed the coordinates without my permission. Several of my sisters followed you, but none of them came back."

The garage ceiling light shone on the metal sign, making the engravings very clear.

Ning Shuang bent down to pick up the nameplate, her thumb tracing the old characters on the back.

"I changed the coordinates, and the person died because of that operation."

She raised her face, her voice flat.

"I've always remembered this debt."

Ye Zhiwei gritted her teeth, her shoulders tensing.

"What's the use of remembering? Sister Lan has waited for you for so many years, and you won't even give her an explanation."

Ning Shuang clutched the nameplate in her hand, her gaze falling on the car window beside her.

"The leader of the Gray Tower is still alive. I have no face to see Sister Lan."

"Are you still going to use him as an excuse?"

Ye Zhiwei stepped forward and reached out to grab Ning Shuang's collar.

Ning Shuang sidestepped and pressed her arm down with her palm.

Ye Zhiwei raised her knee, but Ning Shuang blocked it with her leg and grabbed her shoulder with her other hand, pressing her against the car door.

The movements were clean, leaving Ye Zhiwei no chance to strike a second time.

Ye Zhiwei gritted her teeth and struggled, her shoulders aching from the pressure.

Ning Shuang released her grip and took a half step back.

"After I kill Gray Tower Zero with my own hands, I will go to see Sister Lan."

Ye Zhiwei raised her hand to rub her shoulder, the fire in her eyes still burning.

"Do you think that killing him will bring the dead back?"

"They can't come back."

Ning Shuang gripped the nameplate tightly, her voice lowering.

"But I have to finish this first."

Ye Zhiwei was about to step forward when Ning Shuang opened the car door and got in.

Before the car door closed, she glanced at Ye Zhiwei and left with her last words.

"Stop following me."

The black sedan drove out of the parking space, its wheels leaving water marks on the ground before quickly disappearing at the exit.

Ye Zhiwei stood still, her hands supporting the car body, not moving for a long time.

She bent down to pick up the nameplate from the ground, the metal edge digging into her palm, the pain bringing her to her senses.

She took out her phone and dialed an overseas number.

The phone rang for a long time before it was answered.

"Sister Lan, I've found Ning Shuang."

Ye Zhiwei sent the location of the garage, her fingertip pausing on the screen for a moment.

"She's currently in Sheng'an, working as the risk control director at Fengming Group. She admitted to changing the evacuation coordinates and said she'll only come back to see you after killing Gray Tower Zero."

I heard heavy breathing coming from the other end of the phone.

"Are you sure it's her?"

"I watched her leave with my own eyes."

Ye Zhiwei lowered her eyes and spoke in a very low voice.

"She hasn't changed; she's still the same person who carries everything on her own."

After the call ended, she stood in the garage for a few minutes before turning around and walking back to the elevator.

By the time we returned to Yuanchuan Construction, it was already past lunchtime.

Lu Yunzhou was checking project receipts in his office.

Hearing footsteps, he looked up at the door. Ye Zhiwei's eyes were red, and she was still clutching the old nameplate in her hand.

"What's wrong with your eyes?"

Ye Zhiwei stuffed the nameplate back into her pocket and turned her face away to avoid his gaze.

"It's windy in the garage, and my contact lenses are chafed red."

Lu Yunzhou glanced at her, but didn't press further. He simply pushed the tissues on the table towards her.

Ye Zhiwei picked up a tissue and wiped her eyes.

"Has the proposal been approved?"

"Ning Shuang has signed."

Lu Yunzhou closed the document and placed the receipt on top.

"Notify Cheng Ye this afternoon to prepare to enter the venue tomorrow."

Ye Zhiwei responded and turned to walk to the door.

She stopped and looked back at the sofa in the office.

That was the place where she had temporarily slept last night, and there was a water glass that hadn't been taken away next to it.

Gu Nanqiao had already removed the access control from the duplex apartment, so she had nowhere to go tonight.

Seeing that she was standing still, Lu Yunzhou picked up his car keys and walked over.

"Let's go stay at Bai Zhi's place first."

Ye Zhiwei looked up at him, her hand pressing down on the nameplate in her pocket.

"You'll take me?"

"I'll deliver it."

Lu Yunzhou didn't ask her what she had done in the garage, nor did he press her to find out why her eyes were red.

He sent Bai Zhi a message and soon received a string of addresses.

That was Bai Zhi's old safe house where she used to hide things. It was in a remote location, the house was old, the locks had just been changed, and there was still a medicine box and several cases of mineral water inside.

Bai Zhi only said one thing: "You can stay as long as you want, just don't break the door."

As the car drove out of the company, Ye Zhiwei leaned against the passenger seat, her gaze fixed on the scenery outside the window.

She took out the old nameplate and wiped off the dust with the corner of her clothes.

The serial number was no longer legible, and the engravings on the back had been worn away.

She wiped it several times, but still couldn't make out the last two words.

Lu Yunzhou gripped the steering wheel, remaining silent.

Halfway through the drive, Ye Zhiwei suddenly asked, "Aren't you going to ask me what Ning Shuang and I talked about?"

Lu Yunzhou stared at the road ahead, his tone very direct.

You will speak when you want to.

Ye Zhiwei pursed her lips and put the nameplate back into her pocket.

These words eased the tightness in her chest, but she didn't reply.

The old safe house is located behind a cluster of old residential buildings.

Two of the hallway lights were broken, and the wall was covered with faded photos of rental apartments.

Lu Yunzhou led her up to the third floor and used a key to open the innermost door.

There wasn't much furniture in the room, and the sheets and blankets were all neatly arranged.

There was rice and flour in the kitchen, and two spare cell phones on the table.

Lu Yunzhou placed the key on the table.

"If you need anything, send a message to Bai Zhi."
