With a heart full of trepidation, Ji Buzhi walked into the conference room of the Second Administration Bureau.

The conference room was already full of people, all familiar faces.

He immediately put on the mask, greeted everyone with a smile, and while he was very enthusiastic, he didn't stop walking and quietly scanned the group.

She's not here.

His heart skipped a beat. Wasn't there supposed to be a major personnel reshuffle? How come she's not here?

He glanced at the person in the upper seat, where Zhuge Yunhe sat with a cup of tea in front of him, his expression indifferent.

Ji Buzhi walked over and lowered his voice.

"Director, where is Comrade Jiang?"

Zhuge Yunhe glanced at him, coughed slowly, and raised his voice.

"Please have a seat, everyone. Comrade Jiang will be here shortly."

It will take a while before we arrive.

Ji Buzhi found a place to sit down, lowered his head, placed his hands on his knees, and clenched his fists tightly.

I'll see her soon.

Will she still be the same? Will she still recognize herself? Does she... still remember herself?

Zhuge Yunhe's gaze fell on his tense shoulders, and he sighed helplessly.

In this life, you can't meet someone too amazing, otherwise everyone else will fall short. This kid's really screwed.

However, that girl was honest and straightforward from beginning to end, and she didn't realize at all that the young man beside her had been thinking something else all along.

That's it, he's a retired old man and he won't concern himself with the affairs of young people.

……

When Jiang Zhiyu arrived at the Second Administration Bureau, the people in the conference room were already seated in rows.

She sat down in the seat of honor, feeling a little embarrassed.

"Sorry I'm late."

The people below exchanged a few polite greetings, saying, "It's not late, it's not late either, we just arrived."

Jiang Zhiyu glanced down, then her gaze suddenly stopped.

"Ji Buzhi? When did you get back?"

The look of surprise on her face.

"What missions have you been on these past few years? You've simply vanished."

When Ji heard her say that, he felt a mix of sweetness and bitterness.

She still remembered him. But she had disappeared for several years, and to him it was nothing more than "she's disappeared," nothing to do with him.

He clenched his fist and put on the mask again.

"Director Jiang wouldn't possibly pay attention to my whereabouts. How have you been these past few years?"

"That's good. Where have you been on your top-secret mission all these years?"

……

After exchanging pleasantries, Zhuge Yunhe finally spoke.

"Today is a meeting regarding major personnel changes in our Second Administration Bureau. Our Deputy Director, Comrade Jiang, has been assigned to another important task, so he will no longer serve as Deputy Director."

He paused, then looked around.

"With the organization's approval, Comrade Ji Buzhi is hereby appointed as the Deputy Director of the Second Administration Bureau."

Ji was completely bewildered.

She's leaving.

As a result, I took her place.

Where is she going?

A host of questions flooded his mind, but the years of training and experience had given him the ability to keep things under control. He couldn't afford to panic now.

He stood up and bowed.

"Thank you for the trust placed in me by the Party and the leadership. I will certainly live up to everyone's expectations and do a good job as the deputy director of the Second Administration Bureau. Please give me your guidance and supervision."

……

The meeting lasted another half hour before it ended.

Jiang Zhiyu got up and walked out, and Ji Buzhi followed with a grin.

"Jiang Zhiyu, where are you going? Hehe, can you tell me where you're going to work?"

Jiang Zhiyu turned around and patted him on the shoulder.

"It's similar to this place, and it's also a classified unit."

She glanced at him a few times and nodded.

"How have you been these past few years? You've gotten quite tanned, but you look much more energetic. Most importantly, you've matured; you're much more composed now. It seems the training you've undergone these past few years has truly helped you grow a lot."

Ji Buzhi scratched his hair but didn't reply.

Jiang Zhiyu slapped him again.

"I'm still not used to you being like this. I still think you're better when you're laughing and joking; at least you're vibrant then. Why are you so dull now?"

Ji Buzhi's heart skipped a beat.

Did she notice?

Did she realize what he was thinking?

He was a little nervous. If she found out, would she avoid him even more?

Seeing that he was getting sullen, Jiang Zhiyu pulled him by the sleeve and led him forward.

"Come on, let me treat you to dinner. It's been years."

Ji Buzhi looked down at her movements.

The fair, delicate hand on his arm was pulling at his sleeve, its fingertips gleaming slightly.

He wished that hand would stay with him forever, that they could keep walking forward like this, and never let go.

He mechanically followed her forward, his mind blank.

She was unaware of her own thoughts.

That's good.

He hoped to keep these feelings buried in his heart forever and never let her know.

He took a deep breath and resumed his usual hip-hop style.

"Then I won't hold back today! You have no idea how bland and tasteless the food has been for the past two years in the army, plus daily marches—it's exhausting. Finally back, time to feast!"

"Don't be shy, I have the money and receipts to treat you to a meal."

……

Ji Buzhi chatted with her while secretly observing her.

She was still as beautiful as ever, almost unreal. Her skin was so translucent, as if it had never been exposed to the elements. Her eyes held confidence and composure, lacking the melancholy and weariness often found in other married women.

She must have been very happy these past two years.

Ji Buzhi quickly looked away.

He felt he had been watching for too long. Given Jiang Zhiyu's keen perception, he feared she would discover his feelings.

"Are you married?" he asked.

Jiang Zhiyu said nonchalantly.

"We're married now, and we have two kids, almost four years old."

"You've already had two kids. That fast?"

"Haha, your sister here, twins in one pregnancy, all taken care of at once, so there are only two of them."

Ji didn't know what to feel, but it was a bittersweet feeling.

He looked at her and said.

"You are so lucky."

Jiang Zhiyu nodded.

"I think so too. But I'm just too busy. My husband, my child, and I spend very little time together, and I feel a bit guilty towards my child."

Ji Buzhi quickly added a comment.

"You are both important national figures; this is difficult to avoid. Putting the greater good before one's own family is often neglected."

"Alright, let's not talk about this anymore." Jiang Zhiyu waved her hand. "You've been gone for so many years, haven't you found someone yet? When am I supposed to eat your wedding candy?"

Ji felt a pang of pain in his heart, but waved his hand dismissively.

"Hey! I'm perfectly fine on my own, why would I want someone to control me? I'll probably be single for the rest of my life, just like the old bureau chief."

Jiang Zhiyu turned around and looked him up and down.

"Why do you have such thoughts? The old director's thinking was limited by the times; there are no such limitations now."

She narrowed her eyes.

"I heard from the old director that you're a real hidden talent; you've learned almost everything about the Second Administration Bureau. No wonder you're investigating all those strange and bizarre things in Dacheng Mountain. So, are you trying to learn my skills?"

Ji Buzhi scratched his head awkwardly.

"Can you please stop bringing up things that are hard to swallow? I can't keep up with the big boss's pace."

"Alright, stop joking."

The two walked and talked until they arrived at the state-run restaurant.

They ordered a table full of dishes. Ji Buzhi looked at this table of delicious food, how much he had longed to eat it when he was in the army. But now that the food was actually served to him, he had no taste for it.

"Oh, by the way, Jiang Zhiyu, after you're transferred to another unit, will we be able to see each other in Beijing?"

Jiang Zhiyu said indifferently.

"Of course! My home is right here, and I have two little ones. You can come find me in the compound if you need anything."

Ji Buzhi felt a surge of secret joy.

……

When they parted, Jiang Zhiyu patted Ji Buzhi on the shoulder.

"I believe you can do a great job at the Second Administration Bureau. After all, not everyone has your photographic memory. Keep it up, I'm rooting for you!"

Only after Jiang Zhiyu's figure disappeared from sight did Ji Buzhi begin to move his stiff legs.
