Chapter 402 Earth-side Site Selection
Jiang Zhiyu took the two little ones to play in Bei'an County for a few days.
Being a northerner, his eyes lit up when he saw tropical plants from the south for the first time.
The two little ones haven't been this happy in a long time.
Song Zhiyao nestled in Jiang Zhiyu's arms that night and said in a childish voice.
"Mom has been so great lately, spending all her time with us. When I get back, I'm going to tell my friends how wonderful southern cities are."
Jiang Zhiyu's heart melted at the sound of her words, and he kissed her on the forehead.
I had originally planned to take the two children to Shanghai to visit the old house and let them see where she grew up. But unexpectedly, Grandpa Gao called first.
The location has been chosen.
Her vacation is over.
……
Upon arriving in Kyoto again, Jiang Zhiyu handed the two children over to the Song family elders and headed straight for the central government.
The conference room was already full of people.
As she pushed open the door, her gaze habitually swept around the room. All five group leaders were present, with Elder Gao seated in the main seat, and several unfamiliar senior experts also in attendance.
Then her gaze settled on a familiar figure.
Song Yanzhou sat by the window, dressed in a crisp military uniform, the stars on his epaulets gleaming faintly in the lamplight. He was looking down at the documents in front of him when he heard the door open, looked up, and exchanged a glance with Jiang Zhiyu.
His expression went through a fascinating process of change—first stunned, then incredulous, then excited, and then confused.
He never expected that this was a top-secret mission. Even more unexpectedly, the person all these bigwigs at the table were waiting for was actually his wife.
And what do they call his wife?
Chief Engineer Jiang?
What earth-shattering thing has my wife done this time?
He remembered that the people at this table were discussing going to the moon.
His heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would jump out of his chest. His palms were sweaty, and the corners of the documents were crumpled from his grip.
Seeing his pathetic state, the division commander next door nudged him with his elbow and lowered his voice.
"Don't be so naive. Your face turns this red when you see a woman."
Song Yanzhou was momentarily speechless; he opened his mouth, then closed it again. Now wasn't the right time to explain.
But Jiang Zhiyu, who has sharp ears and eyes, heard these words clearly.
She sat in the head seat, her face serious, but the corners of her mouth curved slightly. She looked at her husband with amusement, seeing him blush so much, unable to explain himself, and even crumpling the documents in his hands.
Xu Yanqiu had already handed over a site selection report.
Jiang Zhiyu took it and opened it, glancing at it.
The report's first page features a high-resolution map with a location circled in red—deep within the main Qinling Mountains.
She looked up at Xu Yanqiu.
Xu Yanqiu cleared his throat and began to introduce himself.
"This place originally had an underground mine shaft belonging to one of our research institutes. We renovated and expanded it."
He picked up a pencil and marked the red circle on the map.
"The underground passage is encased in granite for hundreds of meters. It provides excellent protection against air raids and reconnaissance."
He turned to the next page, which was a cross-sectional diagram showing the thickness and depth of the rock strata.
"Moreover, there are existing military-grade highways, making material transportation very convenient, and existing roads can be widened. The area is characterized by deep mountains, frequent rain and fog, which act as a natural barrier. Most importantly, it's not far from our inland industrial cities, so logistical support won't be a problem."
He put down his pencil and looked around at everyone present.
"We had a few alternative locations. We old guys considered it repeatedly, and for various reasons, we ultimately chose this one."
He looked at Jiang Zhiyu.
"Chief Engineer Jiang, what do you think?"
Jiang Zhiyu carefully examined the data in the report and then looked at the cross-sectional diagram.
"You've thought this through very well. I'm not a professional either, but I'll listen to you. You just need to choose the address and give it to me; I'll handle the rest."
Xu Yanqiu nodded and sat down.
Wen Shu then spoke up.
"From a space launch perspective, the Qinling Mountains have a natural advantage. Located in the inland hinterland, the rocket debris impact zone avoids densely populated areas. Furthermore, we already have tracking and control stations along the Qinling Mountains, so communication support doesn't need to be rebuilt."
Shen Peishan then raised her hand.
"Although the underground mine shaft already exists, the granite is extremely hard, making blasting and tunneling very difficult when expanding the construction. I need at least six months of preparation time, as well as a batch of specialized tunneling equipment."
Xu Yanqiu took over the conversation.
"We've already considered this. The existing structure of the mine can support most of the functional areas, and we've done precise calculations for the parts that need expansion. The actual amount of additional excavation isn't as large as it seems."
Shen Peishan frowned, flipped through the data in the report again, and said nothing more.
Qi Songtao also shared his views.
"The geological structure of the Qinling Mountains is very stable; no earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher have occurred in the past five thousand years. The groundwater level is also lower than the mine's elevation, so there is no risk of water seepage."
Yan Nantian added the last point.
"This location offers sufficient inland depth, and the frequency of US satellite reconnaissance over this area would be obstructed by the terrain, resulting in a very short effective window. Furthermore, there are no foreign institutions, embassies, consulates, or foreign companies within a 50-kilometer radius, minimizing personnel control pressure."
He paused, then glanced around.
"The only thing to be careful about is ensuring that local residents are properly educated on confidentiality beforehand."
In the meeting room, everyone was talking at once, with each group taking turns asking questions, adding information, and debating from their own professional perspectives.
Jiang Zhiyu sat in the high seat, propping her chin up, quietly watching the big shots below argue.
Her gaze occasionally swept over her husband.
Song Yanzhou sat there motionless, his eyes fixed on the document in front of him, his ears perked up, not daring to miss a single word.
The division commander who had just joked with him was now looking at his deputy division commander with a hint of amusement. Why was this guy staring at female comrades during the meeting? But didn't the report say that this guy was married and even had a child?
Don't make a mistake under his watch; he won't let you off easily.
……
The meeting lasted for nearly an hour before finally adjourning.
The group got up and started to walk outside.
Jiang Zhiyu finished tidying up the documents and had just stepped out of the conference room when she heard hurried footsteps behind her.
At this, everyone who was still leaving the conference room stopped in their tracks, staring in disbelief at the scene.
Who is this? This is Chief Engineer Jiang.
How could this deputy division commander just go over and grab someone's hand like that?
As it turned out, Chief Engineer Jiang was unable to shake him off.
Not only did they not shake him off, they actually managed to grab him.
The division commander sitting next to me had his mouth agape, his jaw almost agape.
Then they heard Song Yanzhou say something—
"daughter in law."
The division commander was speechless.
So they're a married couple.
He'd been worrying about this for ages, thinking his deputy division commander had lost his mind.
He glanced at Song Yanzhou, then at Jiang Zhiyu, and a thought suddenly popped into his head: no wonder Song Yanzhou's promotions have been so smooth over the years.
It seems the wife's influence is also a factor in this.
