Chapter 219 Mother's Return
As drowsiness washed over her, Su Fengnan said goodbye to her mother and went back to her room for a nap. As her consciousness gradually faded, she seemed to find herself in a vibrant tea plantation. Farmers were picking tea leaves all over the mountains, their faces beaming with simple, honest smiles. The cheerful laughter of children chasing and playing could be heard from the adults. Watching this bustling scene, Su Fengnan felt a surge of joy.
But in the blink of an eye, the scene changed drastically! The tea trees covering the mountain were ruthlessly cut down, and the once lush tea mountain was instantly turned into a desolate expanse of yellow earth. The adults lamented, while the children stood frozen in shock. All that could be heard was the loggers shouting that this area would be replanted with fruit trees.
Fruit trees? Su Fengnan sneered inwardly. Did she not know that the fruit trees were just a smokescreen? It was nothing more than a scheme to make a quick buck! The trees were planted, but in two or three years, these people would find some excuse to leave a mess behind and run away.
Su Fengnan grew angrier the more she thought about it, and a tightness in her chest actually woke her up.
She sat up abruptly, and before she could even catch her breath, her phone rang. She answered, and it was Zhou Chenyu's voice: "Hello, Brother Zhou."
"Nan'er, I've made all the arrangements. The nanny needs to get up early tomorrow, around 3 a.m., and I've arranged a car to take her directly to the airport."
"Okay, thank you, Brother Zhou. I'll go tell my mom right away."
After hanging up the phone, Su Fengnan slipped on her slippers and left the room. In the living room, Wen Xiaofen had already packed her luggage, with bags and packages standing next to the TV cabinet.
Following the sound, Su Fengnan entered the kitchen. Wen Xiaofen was intently stirring the ice jelly in a bowl. The wooden spoon scraped the bottom of the bowl, making a muffled "scratching" sound, and a faint, fresh scent of herbs filled the air. Su Fengnan walked over, naturally took her mother's arm, and rested her chin on her shoulder: "Mom, I have good news for you."
Wen Xiaofen didn't stop what she was doing. She glanced at her daughter and asked with a knowing smile, "What good news?"
"You don't need to rush off later. The private car driver I contacted has agreed to take you to the airport tomorrow." She paused, then continued, "But it will have to leave at 3 a.m. to take you directly to the terminal."
Upon hearing this, Wen Xiaofen's eyes lit up, but she immediately frowned and asked the most practical question: "How much does he get paid for this trip?"
Su Fengnan: "..."
This really stumped her. How could Zhou Chenyu's arrangement of a private car be measured in two hundred yuan? She hesitated for a moment, her mind racing, and blurted out a lie: "Two hundred."
"So expensive?" Wen Xiaofen frowned even more, and stopped using the wooden spoon in her hand, clearly feeling it wasn't worth it.
"Mom, do the math," Su Fengnan quickly shook her arm and pleaded. "Think about it, staying in the provincial capital tonight will cost you over a hundred yuan, plus the bus fare of several tens of yuan, right? It'll add up to about the same amount. Actually, it's a great deal, and it saves you from having to carry all your bags and squeeze onto the bus station."
After hearing this, Wen Xiaofen's brows relaxed. She picked up the wooden spoon again and stirred the ice jelly in the bowl, muttering, "That's true, it's not a bad deal when you think about it this way. You're quite the shrewd girl."
"I'm leaving early tomorrow morning, so don't bother seeing me off," Wen Xiaofen said as she placed the mixed ice jelly on the table.
"That won't do. I have to take you to the airport and then take the driver's car back," Su Fengnan quickly replied.
"Really, there's no need. Mom's an adult now, why would I let you run around in the middle of the night? Besides, I wouldn't feel comfortable letting you ride back alone in a strange driver's car!" Wen Xiaofen said firmly, waving her hand.
"Oh, Mom..." Su Fengnan drawled, trying to grab Wen Xiaofen's arm, but she dodged away. "Be good."
Seeing her mother's firm stance, Su Fengnan thought to herself: Who cares? This is a special car arranged by Brother Zhou, the safety is top-notch, I won't worry about it. I'll just get in when the time comes.
However, she dared not say this aloud. Su Fengnan was determined to personally escort the person into the terminal before she would feel at ease.
At dinner, Su Fengnan didn't have much of an appetite and only ate a bowl of ice jelly made by her mother. After dinner, she sat in front of the computer and typed for two hours, but she was so sleepy that she washed up and went to bed early.
At 2:30 a.m., before the alarm clock went off, Su Fengnan opened her eyes.
It was pitch black and silent outside the window, with only the occasional bark of a dog coming from a distant house. She tiptoed out of bed, careful not to wake Wen Xiaofen next door. After washing up, she went to the kitchen to boil two eggs. She also heated up a bowl of ice jelly. Just as she put everything on the table, Wen Xiaofen's door opened.
"Mom, you're awake too?" Su Fengnan was a little surprised.
"I can't sleep, I'm thinking about it." Wen Xiaofen came out wearing a coat, glanced at the breakfast on the table, and said, "You silly girl, you even heated up some ice jelly."
"Eat something to fill your stomach, otherwise your stomach will feel empty on the plane."
The mother and daughter ate their breakfast silently under the dim light. Wen Xiaofen went to check the luggage, while Su Fengnan stood by the window looking at the dark night outside.
Around 3 p.m., the phone rang. After answering the call, the mother and daughter picked up their luggage and went out. At the entrance of the residential area, a black sedan was parked under a streetlamp, and the driver was leaning against the car door smoking.
"Let's go, this should be the one." Su Fengnan picked up her suitcase and walked over. Upon closer inspection, she realized the driver was Zhao Chuan—Zhou Chenyu's assistant. This put her at ease.
Wen Xiaofen slung her bag over her shoulder and followed behind her daughter. The morning air was cool and damp with dew. The driver took the suitcase and put it in the trunk, then opened the back door for Wen Xiaofen.
"Hello, Auntie, my surname is Zhao," the driver greeted her with a smile.
Wen Xiaofen nodded and got into the car. Su Fengnan sat in the passenger seat, glanced back at her mother, and said, "Mom, I'll take you to the airport."
"Oh dear, hurry up and get down. I don't need to see you off. Why are you so disobedient?" Wen Xiaofen said anxiously.
Seeing that the mother and daughter were about to start a fight, Zhao Chuan didn't know what to say and could only helplessly look at Zhou Chenyu, who was hiding in the shadows in the distance.
A few seconds later, Su Fengnan's phone beeped. She picked it up and saw it was a message from Zhou Chenyu. After reading the message, she got out of the car and gave her mother a few words of advice through the car window.
"Okay, I'll let you know I arrived safely," Wen Xiaofen quickly replied.
The car slowly drove away from the residential area and disappeared into the morning mist. Su Fengnan stood there for a long time until the red light at the rear of the car was completely out of sight before she sighed softly, turned around, and prepared to walk back.
However, as she turned around, she suddenly stopped in her tracks.
Before she knew it, Zhou Chenyu was already standing behind her. In the hazy night, he quietly watched her, a faint smile in his eyes.
Su Fengnan paused for a moment, then let out a long breath. She happily stepped forward, naturally taking Zhou Chenyu's arm, and looked up to ask, "Brother Zhou, what brings you here?"
"I wanted to go with you to see Auntie off." Zhou Chenyu casually put his arm around her shoulder and led her back. "Let's go back and get some more sleep, it's not even dawn yet."
"Okay, fine." Su Fengnan nodded obediently.
Whether she goes back to sleep or not is up to her.
