Phoenix Cries Return to Court
Chapter 3 Human or Ghost
Lin Xihe withdrew her gaze, suppressing the strange feeling in her heart, and asked, "And who are you?"
The man raised an eyebrow. He had other purposes for this trip and didn't want to cause any unnecessary trouble, much less get entangled in this matter.
Without saying another word, he flipped his wrist and reached out to knock the unidentified woman unconscious.
But to everyone's surprise, the woman in white seemed to have anticipated his actions.
She subtly dodged his palm strike.
Before he could react, her hand, with considerable force, landed firmly on his chest.
She knows martial arts!
The man's heart tightened, and he subconsciously placed his right hand on the sword at his waist, a hint of vigilance flashing in his eyes.
But to everyone's surprise, the woman in white seemed to have read his mind. She stepped forward first and, in a flash, deftly drew the sword from his waist.
The man in black was momentarily stunned.
In this whole world, there are very few people who can dodge his attacks and snatch his sword within a few steps.
She slightly raised her wrist, intending to use her sword to remove the strip of cloth from the man's face.
But the man deflected the sword's edge with his elbow.
Lin Xihe drew her sword again.
Unfortunately, she had only recently transmigrated into this body and had not yet fully adapted, in addition to the fact that this body was already too weak.
After only a few moves, he felt his steps falter and his breathing became unsteady, causing his movements to slow down.
The man saw through her immediately, and with a swift movement, he grabbed her wrist holding the sword.
His palm was warm, pressed against her slightly cool skin, the pressure neither too light nor too heavy, yet she couldn't break free even a little.
In a swift motion, he snatched the sword back into his hand.
Immediately afterwards, the man tightened his wrist and pulled her sharply in front of him.
Lin Xi staggered half a step, then moved a few steps closer to him.
"I should be the one asking," he leaned down, his warm breath brushing against her ear, his deep, husky voice saying, "Whose daughter is dressed like this, out here pretending to be a ghost?"
Lin Xi's heart skipped a beat, her wrist throbbed with pain from the pulling, yet she remained composed, coldly replying, "How do you know whether I'm a human or a ghost?"
"In that case," the man's eyes suddenly darkened, and he increased the pressure on his hand, a ruthless glint flashing in his cold eyes as he approached, "then this young master will have no choice but to... personally 'send' you back."
"You dare!" Lin Xihe raised her eyes and shouted in a low voice.
Their eyes met, and although it was their first meeting, their breaths were so close that the faint scent of agarwood wafted into her nose.
Her heart skipped a beat.
This taste... it's so familiar!
Lin Xi stared intently at the face before her, countless fragmented memories churning in her mind, yet she could never piece them together completely.
who is it?
What is your purpose in being here?
Her heart pounded like a drum, and she had just opened her mouth to ask what was going on when a sharp shout suddenly rang in her ears.
"Who goes there!"
The next second, hurried footsteps, accompanied by the clanging of swords, approached from afar...
It looked like several guards were walking quickly towards them.
The man raised an eyebrow slightly. "Your skills are exceptional; I suppose I needn't bother with you. If you live long enough, we'll meet again someday."
As soon as he finished speaking, a dark shadow flashed, and the person leaped onto the high wall, disappearing in an instant like a sudden gust of wind and rain.
As if anyone can't do kung fu!
Lin Xihe was filled with resentment and wanted to use his strength to leap up, but as soon as he gathered his strength, before he could even hear the wind, his feet did not move an inch.
This body is too weak and its heart meridian is not open. It was extremely dangerous to jump down, let alone fly.
He sighed inwardly, "The tide has turned!"
Well, times have changed. Although I don't have the courage I had back then, I still managed to escape by climbing over the wall.
She glanced around and immediately chose a stepping stone, intending to use it to climb over the wall. Moments later, she was surrounded by a group of armed guards who had entered from outside the courtyard.
Since things have come to this point, if force won't work, then we'll try strategy; outsmarting them will surely prevent any further mishaps.
Lin Xihe calmed down slightly and slowly turned around.
Before she could even speak, her shockingly unrecognizable "dead" face was revealed, and the burly men who had been ordered to collect the body were stunned into silence, as if struck by lightning.
The burly men turned deathly pale and retreated hastily, as if the woman before them was a demon crawling out of the netherworld.
With a clang, the lead guard's sword fell to the ground.
"Quickly...quickly report to the master and the madam! The madam has risen from the dead!" The lead guard's legs went weak, and he retreated while giving the order in a trembling voice.
"Stop!" Lin Xihe shouted sharply upon seeing this.
His gaze fell on the guard who was scrambling and stumbling to deliver the message.
When the man saw her eyes, clear and cold like a deep pool of blue water, he was as if he had seen a ghost. He shuddered and collapsed to the ground, his body going limp.
The lead guard blinked and carefully examined the woman in front of him.
She was dressed in simple white robes, her figure as thin as a sheet of paper, yet her face was breathtakingly beautiful.
Her lips were naturally red, her skin as smooth as cream and white as snow, and her black hair cascaded down like a waterfall. One glance was enough to make one feel disoriented, unable to distinguish between immortals and mortals, or between the netherworld and the netherworld.
This was clearly his former wife, Madam Wen, who was always so submissive, yet she exuded an aura of authority that commanded respect without needing to be spoken!
With a hint of disbelief, the guard tentatively asked, "Madam... are you a human or a ghost?"
No sooner had she finished speaking than a cold glint flashed past, and Lin Xihe snatched the sword from the guard's waist in an instant.
"How about I send you to the underworld to ask him for his own opinion?" A clear female voice fell from above, and the blade around the guard's neck tightened even more.
The guard, terrified by the imposing aura and the sharp blade, broke out in a cold sweat and hurriedly said, "I wouldn't dare! I know I was wrong! Madam, please spare my life!"
"Take me to see He Guangzheng," Lin Xihe commanded coldly.
Upon seeing that the person in front of him was still lying on the ground, his eyes darkened, and he tightened his grip on the sharp blade in his hand.
The guard swallowed hard, his voice barely audible, "Madam, the Minister is currently in the front courtyard getting married, so he is probably...unavailable."
Upon hearing this, Lin Xihe paused involuntarily, holding his sword.
Getting married?
She looked down at herself.
He wore a plain white coarse cloth dress, and his black hair was loose and messy.
Force the original wife to her death so he can marry a new one?
How could He Guangzheng be so heartless and ungrateful!
She composed herself. "Since my husband has such good fortune, how can I not go and ask for a cup of celebratory wine?"
Having said that, he twirled the longsword in his hand.
The guard felt a chill on his neck and was so frightened that he closed his eyes tightly.
"stand up."
She lowered her eyes to look at the person kneeling on the ground.
"Lead the way to the front yard."
……
In the shadows, a tall figure dressed in black was hidden.
A pair of deep eyes were fixed on the figure in plain clothes not far away.
Seeing that the guards with knives had not harmed her, his tense shoulders relaxed slightly, and a faint smile appeared on his lips.
"This woman... is truly interesting."
He muttered to himself, a hint of amusement flashing in his eyes, yet also a subtle, almost imperceptible, curiosity.
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a dark shadow appeared before him like a ghost.
The newcomer was also dressed as a servant, his face covered with a black veil, revealing only a pair of black eyes. He bowed respectfully to the man, saying, "Please forgive my lateness, sir!"
The man slowly withdrew his gaze, looked at the person in front of him, and said in a deep voice, "It's alright. Did you find anything?"
The masked man quickly raised his hand, took out a tightly sealed letter from his pocket, and presented it with both hands. After hesitating for a moment, he spoke with a solemn tone, "Young master, I infiltrated the study of the Minister's mansion and found this letter in the most secret compartment. The handwriting on it is obscure, but it seems to be related to what happened a year ago."
The man's breath caught in his throat upon hearing this.
He looked up at the receding figure in plain clothes, his eyes swirling with complex emotions.
"In that case, let's go and see what's going on up ahead."
