The God of War Who Protects the Nation: Starting with Saving a Mother and Daughter in Distress
Chapter 51 Unleashing Divine Power
Upon hearing Luo Kai's voice, Qin An turned his horse around and was about to rush over when he saw a familiar figure emerge from the gun formation.
That was another captain, Luo Sheng, who was from the same clan.
After spending some time together, Qin An was no longer unfamiliar with Luo Kai.
I know that Luo Kai came from a prominent family and was quite capable throughout his life, but unfortunately he was born out of wedlock and was not highly regarded.
Even if they were born out of wedlock, their lives were still much better than those of ordinary people.
Putting aside everything else, their talent pool is beyond the imagination of ordinary people; the family has a wealth of talented individuals to choose from.
Luo Sheng was an assistant that Luo Kai found from his family, and he was much stronger than the average person.
He brandished a large cleaver and hacked down the first few Baekje men.
But more people surged forward and surrounded him.
"Uncle Luo!" Qin An roared and spurred his horse forward.
His warhorse, like a raging lion, smashed through the crowd.
The spear flashed with a cold light, cutting down a group of Baekje people surrounding Luo Sheng.
"Come with me!" He reached out and pulled Luo Sheng onto his horse.
Luo Sheng's arm had been slashed, and blood soaked through his sleeve, but he grinned and said, "Kid Qin, your marksmanship is much better than mine back then."
Qin An had no time for jokes.
He saw a dark mass of people emerging from the distant mountains and forests, their torches forming a fiery dragon.
Seeing the massive crowd, Qin An gasped.
I initially thought we had encountered stragglers from Baekje.
But now it seems that I underestimated this crisis; I've encountered a large force.
Seeing this, Qin An dared not fight head-on and turned his horse around to charge back to his own lines.
The Baekje soldiers surged forward like a tide behind them, their roars shaking the fallen leaves in the forest.
He wielded his iron spear with one hand, the tip slicing through the night, knocking down several of the closest pursuers from their horses. The splattered blood fell on his face, burning hot as if it were about to burst into flames.
"Captain Qin is back!" came the shouts of the brothers from the front lines.
Luo Kai stood at the forefront of the grain cart formation. Seeing Qin An leading Luo Sheng back, his tense expression eased slightly: "Take Luo Sheng away immediately and bandage him!"
His gaze swept over Qin An's blood-stained armor. "You rest for a moment, I'll take some men..."
"Chief!" Qin An dismounted, knelt on one knee, and used his iron spear as a support for his trembling body. "Your subordinate requests to fight!"
Luo Kai frowned: "You've been fighting for a long time; the brothers need a break too..."
"Commander, look!" Qin An suddenly looked up, pointing to the Baekje soldiers surging towards them in the distance. "They may be just miscellaneous soldiers, but there are too many of them! If we don't break through their formation, we'll all die here once they surround us and burn our supplies with torches!"
Looking in the direction he pointed, countless torches wriggled in the darkness, like a burning serpent, slowly approaching the grain cart array.
Although the Baekje soldiers were disorganized, they charged forward with an indomitable spirit. When the front ranks fell, the rear ranks stepped over the corpses and continued to surge forward.
"What about the other captains?" Luo Kai asked in a deep voice.
"The captains of the second and third squads are waiting at the front!" the guard replied hastily.
Luo Kai took a deep breath and glanced at Qin An and the other team leaders.
Qin An's face was smeared with blood, but his eyes shone brightly, showing no signs of fatigue.
The second team leader was a weathered veteran with bulging veins on his hand as he gripped the knife.
The third team leader, being younger, gritted his teeth, clearly also holding back a lot of energy.
"Alright!" Luo Kai drew his long sword sharply from his waist, the blade gleaming coldly in the moonlight. "Qin An, Wei Bo, Sun Qiang, Li Shan, Zhou Ping, each of you take a hundred men and follow me to charge the enemy's left flank! The rest of you stay behind and make sure to hold the supply wagons!"
"Wait!" Qin An suddenly spoke up, "A centurion is the commander of an army; how can he charge into battle so easily? Why don't I lead the charge while you command the overall situation from the center!"
"I'm also willing to charge in place of the centurion!" Second Squad Leader Wei Bo immediately echoed, "I've been in the army for five years, I don't even consider these rabble a threat!"
Luo Kai looked at the captains who had volunteered for the mission, a hint of emotion flashing in his eyes.
He knew Qin An was right. While leading troops into battle was commonplace, the supply wagons were of paramount importance right now, and he should indeed be in charge of the central command.
"Very well." Luo Kai sheathed his sword and said in a deep voice, "Qin An, you are familiar with the enemy formation and your horsemanship is superb. You will be the vanguard, leading five hundred elite troops to charge the left flank! Wei Bo and Sun Qiang will provide support from both flanks. You must tear open an opening and disrupt their formation!"
He looked at Luo Sheng, who was bandaging his wounds, and said, "Luo Sheng, your injuries aren't serious. Take command of the main force for now. If the supply wagons are lost, you'll have to answer to me with your head!"
"Yes!" everyone responded in unison.
Qin An mounted his horse, his iron spear pointing straight ahead: "Brothers, follow me and kill!"
The crowd followed closely behind, the sound of hooves like muffled thunder, exploding in the silent mountain forest.
The other captains each led a squad of infantry, armed with long spears, to flank the Baekje people from both sides, forming a pincer attack and charging fiercely towards the left flank of the Baekje people.
When they were still a hundred paces from the enemy lines, Qin An raised his hand to signal his troops to slow down.
He took the iron bow off his back, drew three arrows from his quiver, and nocked them on the string.
His arm muscles bulged, and the bowstring was drawn to its fullest extent.
"Watch me!" he hissed, loosening his grip.
The three arrows, like shooting stars chasing the moon, left three afterimages in the air and accurately struck three Baekje men riding thin horses in the enemy ranks.
The three men were clearly the leaders of the miscellaneous soldiers. They were brandishing their scimitars and shouting as they charged forward. Caught off guard, they were all struck by arrows and fell from their horses.
"Excellent archery!" came cheers from the brothers behind them.
Upon seeing this, the Baekje people became somewhat flustered.
The farmers, who had already been forcibly conscripted, slowed down when they saw their leader killed.
"Fire the arrows!" Qin An shouted.
The accompanying archers unleashed their arrows, which rained down on the enemy ranks like locusts, felling another wave of Baekje people.
Just then, a hail of arrows rained down from the Baekje. Qin An ducked behind his horse's neck, his iron spear flashing so fast it was impenetrable, deflecting each arrow aimed at him.
A few stray bullets struck his armor, making a crisp clanging sound, but failed to penetrate.
"Speed up!" Qin An straightened up and pointed his iron spear forward.
The warhorse accelerated again, carrying him into the enemy ranks.
The iron spear, like a dragon emerging from the sea, swept and slashed, each swing accompanied by screams and blood.
A strong Baekje man swung a hoe at Qin An, who flicked his wrist and sent the spear tip sliding up the hoe handle, piercing the man's throat.
Another woman wielding a sickle lunged forward, but was knocked away by the warhorse and fell to the ground, her fate unknown.
Qin An, mounted on his horse, looked down upon the terrified faces that filled his vision.
Among these people were elderly people with white hair, sallow-faced and emaciated teenagers, and even women holding children.
But when they raise their weapons and charge at us, they are no longer civilians, but enemies.
"Kill!" Qin An roared, sweeping his iron spear across and knocking several Baekje men to the ground.
His system panel was rapidly refreshing in his mind.
The cold, hard numbers made him even more sober.
He knew that if he wanted to live and go back to see Yang Yuyan and the children, he could not show any mercy!
