The God of War Who Protects the Nation: Starting with Saving a Mother and Daughter in Distress
Chapter 76 Ascending the City Wall
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, the bugle call to assemble sounded sharply.
Zhang Xu stood on the high platform, his gaze sweeping over his soldiers. His voice was hoarse yet carried a powerful authority: "By order of the commander-in-chief, today our troops will launch a main attack on the east gate. Luo Kai!"
"Your subordinate is here!" Luo Kai stepped forward.
"You will lead your troops in coordination with the left wing and must create an opening before 9 AM!"
"yes!"
Back at the camp, Luo Kai immediately gathered everyone together.
He pointed to the east gate on the map, his finger trembling slightly: "The east gate is the weakest point in Pingxiang City, but it's also where the defenders are most frantic. Commander Zhang is leading the main attack, Commander Li is leading the second flanking maneuver, and Qin An..."
He looked at Qin An, a hint of hesitation flashing in his eyes: "Your cavalry... will still have to go after all!"
When Luo Kai said this, there was a hint of helplessness in his voice.
Logically speaking, cavalry should not be required to participate in sieges.
After all, cavalrymen are much more valuable than infantrymen; every skilled cavalryman is a precious gem.
Using it for attacking cities would be a waste of its potential.
However, Qin An's cavalry unit was a temporary formation and not a regular cavalry force, so it was not recognized by the higher-ups.
If this loophole is opened, various units will likely be able to quickly assemble a large number of "cavalry".
After all, everyone wants to protect their elite troops.
Although Qin An felt a little unwilling, he could understand and simply nodded silently.
Seeing that Qin An remained silent, Luo Kai comforted him, "I pleaded with Commander Zhang Wan to spare your life and have reserved the strongest chariot for you to protect the brothers as much as possible."
Qin An felt a warmth in his heart and stopped thinking about it.
After all, military orders are absolute, so he could only clasp his hands in a fist and say, "This humble general obeys the order."
Before setting off, Qin An carefully inspected the armor and weapons of each soldier, and instructed Han Quan: "After you climb the city wall, protect the left and right flanks, and don't let the brothers get surrounded."
"Don't worry, Commander Qin!" Han Quan patted his chest, but his voice was a little strained.
When the horn of attack sounded, Qin An took a deep breath and was the first to jump onto the chariot.
The interior of the carriage was narrow, only able to accommodate a dozen or so people. He stood close to the wooden plank and looked outside through the arrow slit.
"Proceed!"
With shouts, the vehicle slowly moved forward.
The Baekje soldiers on the city wall were already in full battle array, and arrows whizzed by, striking the wooden planks with a dull thud.
Occasionally, rockets would be fired, but the soldiers would extinguish them with wet cloths.
"Fifty steps to go!" came a shout from outside.
Qin An raised his hand to signal the archers to prepare.
The arrow slits of the chariot slowly opened, revealing soldiers inside with their bows drawn.
"Thirty steps!"
"put!"
At Qin An's command, dozens of arrows shot out like meteors.
The Baekje soldiers who were arching and shooting arrows on the city wall fell one after another, their screams carried by the wind.
Qin An personally drew his bow and aimed at a junior officer who was directing a catapult.
The bowstring trembled slightly, and the arrow pierced the air, striking the junior officer squarely in the throat.
He could even see the astonishment in the other person's eyes before he slowly collapsed.
"Good arrow!" came a low cheer from inside the battering ram.
Qin An dared not be negligent and fired three arrows in succession, each one accurately taking a life.
A small blank space suddenly appeared on the city wall directly in their direction.
But the Baekje soldiers quickly filled the gap, and more arrows and stones came flying at them.
The cart suddenly lurched, as if struck by a boulder. Several screams came from outside, presumably from the soldiers pushing it.
"Speed up!" Qin An shouted.
The car jolted violently, as if it had hit something.
A roar came from outside: "We're here! Take the ramp!"
Qin An gripped his iron spear tightly, his heart pounding like a drum.
He knew that the most tragic moment had arrived.
"Clang!"
The heavy footboards struck the city wall with a piercing clang.
Almost simultaneously, Baekje soldiers on the city wall roared and charged forward, their swords and spears thrusting in from both sides of the ramp.
"kill!"
Qin An roared, and his iron spear shot out like a snake from its hole, piercing through the gap and striking a Baekje soldier in the abdomen.
He twisted his wrist, causing the spear tip to churn, and the soldier fell down with a scream.
"Follow me!"
Qin An was the first to leap out of the battering ram. As soon as his foot touched the top of the city wall, he felt his foot go weak and he found himself standing on a corpse. He didn't have time to think. He swept his iron spear across, forcing back the two enemy soldiers in front of him, and then leaped up and landed on the inner side of the city wall.
"Stop him!"
A Baekje centurion charged forward, brandishing a long sword. The blade was sharp and aimed straight at Qin An's face.
Qin An ducked to dodge, and his iron spear slashed upwards, the tip grazing the opponent's lower abdomen and drawing a string of blood beads.
The centurion screamed in pain, but Qin An had already closed in and slammed the butt of his gun heavily into the back of his head, causing him to collapse to the ground.
"Hurry up and catch up!" Qin An shouted back.
Han Quan led his soldiers out in single file and quickly formed a small circle.
But there were simply too many Baekje soldiers. They surged in from both sides, their swords and spears like a forest, and instantly surrounded them.
"Charge out!" Qin An charged forward with his spear, the iron spear flashing like lightning.
The spear tip points, thrusts, and flicks; the shaft sweeps, smashes, and rams—every move is aimed at vital points.
A Baekje soldier raised his shield to block, but was struck on the inside of the shield by the spear, his wrist bone shattered, and he fell down screaming.
Another soldier seized the opportunity to slash from the side, but Qin An dodged to the side, swung his iron spear back, and pierced the soldier's ribs.
Blood splattered on his face, warm and sticky.
Qin An licked the blood from the corner of his mouth, a fierce glint flashing in his eyes, and killed even more fiercely.
But there were just too many enemies.
Just as a soldier felled an enemy soldier in front of him, a spear thrust from the side pierced his chest.
Another soldier was hit by a rolling stone and fell from the city wall with a scream.
Qin An has fewer and fewer people around him, and the pressure is increasing.
"Commander Qin, the left flank is about to collapse!" Han Quan roared, his left arm already injured, blood staining half of his body.
Qin An caught a glimpse of the soldiers on the left flank retreating, and immediately turned his spear and charged towards them.
The iron spear, like a dragon emerging from the sea, tore open a gap and rescued several soldiers who were about to be surrounded and killed.
Just then, a long sword came slashing from the side. Qin An couldn't dodge in time and could only raise his arm to block.
With a clang, the knife struck his arm guard, the impact making his arm go numb and his hand throb with pain.
He roared and thrust his spear through the soldier's chest with a backhand motion, but he didn't notice that another spear was coming from behind him.
"Be careful!"
Han Quan lunged forward and pushed Qin An away.
The spear pierced deeply into Han Quan's shoulder. He groaned and slowly collapsed.
"Han Quan!" Qin An's eyes were bloodshot.
"Kill...kill your way out..." Han Quan looked at him, completely ignoring his own injuries.
He knew in his heart that Qin An was their greatest support.
This is why he didn't hesitate to shield Qin An.
Qin An felt a surge of blood rush to the top of his head, and his eyes were instantly filled with blood.
He roared to the sky, swinging his iron spear faster and more fiercely, the tip of the spear even gleaming with a faint bloody light.
"kill!"
He became like a madman, abandoning all defense and focusing solely on attack.
Wherever the iron spear passed, blood and flesh flew everywhere, and severed limbs were scattered all over the ground.
The Baekje soldiers were so intimidated by his fierce demeanor that they instinctively retreated.
Qin An ignored them and pushed forward, stepping over the corpses.
He didn't know how many people he had killed; he only felt his arms getting heavier and heavier, and his vision becoming increasingly blurry. Only the murderous intent in his heart sustained him.
