Southern guerrilla warfare: I led the Red Seventh Army Corps to amassed a million troops.
Chapter 161 A Narrow Escape
Several clerks were taking inventory of supplies with notebooks. He stood by with his hands behind his back and watched for a while, then strolled to the warehouse entrance and looked at the neatly stacked wooden crates inside.
The commander guarding the dock approached, smiling obsequiously, "Commander, why did you come in person?"
"Old Li!" Wu Chengren turned his head to look at him, "I know your tricks very well. But you need to know what you should and shouldn't be greedy for."
Regiment Commander Li's smile froze for a moment, then he quickly waved his hand: "Commander, look at what you're saying. Do you think I don't even have that much awareness? We're desperately short of ammunition right now. These things are our lifeline. Do you think I'm the kind of person who would rather die than give up money?"
Wu Chengren looked at him, and after a few seconds nodded: "Hmm, very good, as expected of an old hand who has followed me for so many years. This time, there will naturally be other ways to give you a share of the spoils. You keep a close eye on things down there."
Regiment Commander Li stood at attention and saluted: "Rest assured, Division Commander, I have a close watch on every box of goods at the dock, and no one will be able to touch a single hair on it."
Wu Chengren grunted in agreement, then turned and walked a few steps toward the pier, wanting to check the cargo ship's waterline.
Just as he took his third step!
"Bang!"
A gunshot rang out from the direction of the sentry post on the outskirts of the port, crisp and abrupt.
Wu Chengren suddenly stopped in his tracks.
Before he could turn his head, a second shot rang out, followed by a third, a fourth, and then a barrage of bullets.
Shouts erupted from the perimeter, spreading rapidly like a tidal wave.
"Enemy attack!"
Commander Li's voice trembled. He grabbed Wu Chengren's arm: "Commander! Retreat!"
Wu Chengren shook off his hand, glanced in the direction from which the gunshots came, and then glanced at the piles of weapon crates that had not yet been moved into the warehouse by the dock.
Garlic Bird, weapons are his lifeline, but what is his lifeline more important than his life?
He turned and ran towards the pier.
Behind them, more intense gunfire erupted from the direction of the warehouse.
Bullets flew past his head and sides with a sharp whooshing sound, hitting the wooden planks of the dock and scattering wood chips.
His adjutant, Zhao Wenrui, ran a few steps behind him when his body suddenly jolted, as if he had been shoved hard by something. He staggered a couple of steps and fell to the ground.
Wu Chengren looked back.
Zhao Wenrui lay on the ground, a dark red stain spreading beneath him. His hand, still gripping his pistol, twitched slightly before going still.
He didn't stop. He turned around, stepped onto the railing at the edge of the pier, and jumped down.
Having considerable experience in survival, he immediately hid under the pier.
The gunfire overhead lasted for a while before quickly subsiding.
The battle situation was exactly as he had expected; if the Red Army was going to make a move, it would definitely concentrate its elite forces.
The troops on the dock numbered less than a regiment; how could they possibly hold them off?
But why this particular time?
The sky gradually darkened.
Wu Chengren crouched in the shadows under the pier, and had no idea how much time had passed.
His back was pressed against the wet wooden stake, and mud covered his calves. He tried to keep his breaths shallow and light, afraid of making the slightest sound.
At first, there were sporadic gunshots and footsteps on the dock overhead, but those sounds gradually faded away, and then it became completely quiet.
The light filtering through the gaps in the wooden planks overhead had dimmed, turning from grayish-white to iron gray.
One of his shoes had been lost somewhere when he jumped down, leaving the other one filled with mud and water, heavy and cold.
He only dared to move after it was completely dark.
First, it cautiously poked half its head out and glanced at the dock.
There was no one in sight, no firelight, only a few corpses lying on the side of the pier.
The warehouse door was wide open, and it was pitch black inside; you couldn't see anything.
Or rather, there's nothing left!
Wu Chengren felt a deep sorrow, a profound despair. These guns and bullets were all his!
They were all bought from foreign merchants with real money.
I didn't even touch it, and it suddenly became someone else's.
You beast! You beast!
This must have been done by that bastard Ye Fei again!
Damn it, this guy loves playing these underhanded tricks the most. When I get back, I'll make him pay double.
Wu Chengren straightened up, holding onto the railing, and tried to take a couple of steps. His bare foot stepped on the rough wooden plank, and his toe was pricked by a splinter of wood, causing him to gasp in pain.
I finally managed to find my way back to the port authority's office.
The house was ransacked, and the windowpanes were shattered all over the floor.
He pulled out a jacket draped over the back of a chair and put it on, then found a pair of cloth shoes that belonged to someone else but were just the right size to fit into.
He left the office and headed towards Ningde City along the coastline.
After walking about two miles, he encountered the first group of routed soldiers on the road.
Seven or eight people sat crookedly on the trunk of a fallen tree by the roadside, some holding guns, others empty-handed.
Upon seeing a figure approaching, several people simultaneously raised their guns.
Wu Chengren shouted in a hoarse voice, "Don't shoot!" Only when they heard his voice did the men lower their guns.
One of the veterans sized him up for a while before tentatively asking, "Commander?"
Wu Chengren nodded.
The veteran looked like he'd seen a ghost: "Commander... you're still alive?"
"Enough with the nonsense. What's the situation in the city? How's Ningde?"
The routed soldiers looked at each other in bewilderment.
The veteran hesitated for a moment before speaking, "Commander, the city... is in chaos."
Explain yourself.
"While you were away, the Red Army suddenly launched a fierce attack on the east side of the city. It was a very fierce attack, and the news spread quickly throughout the city that... that you had fled." The old soldier paused here, glancing at Wu Chengren as if afraid he would get angry.
Wu Chengren's Adam's apple bobbed up and down; he already had a vague idea of what was going to happen next.
However, he dared not think about the tragic consequences.
Seeing that he didn't react, the veteran continued, "Later, I don't know who opened the city gate first, it seemed to be one of Chen Qixuan's men. They said the Red Army had entered the city, and if they continued to defend it, they would die anyway, so they might as well open the gate and save their lives."
"As soon as the city gates opened, the Red Army rushed in. The brothers defending the city had no time to react, and more than half of them became routed soldiers."
Wu Chengren felt as if he had been hit in the chest with a blunt object.
After a long silence, he finally managed to squeeze out a sentence through gritted teeth: "Warlords' armies are simply unreliable."
After a moment of silence, Wu Chengren stood up and dusted off his trousers.
"Let's go, head north to Fu'an. As long as we get to Fu'an, the 57th Division will still be there, and we'll still have a chance to turn the tide."
Several defeated soldiers stood up one after another and followed him along the official road into the night.
