Southern guerrilla warfare: I led the Red Seventh Army Corps to amassed a million troops.
Chapter 177 Easy Conquest of Quanzhou
After eliminating Lu Xingbang's bandit army, the jurisdiction of the Minzhong Military Region extended west to Shaxian, south to Datian, and north to the Minjiang River, forming a contiguous area with the Fujian-Zhejiang Soviet Area. To the east, it controlled Yongtai and Xianyou counties, and some guerrilla areas had reached the Putian coast.
It effectively controlled six county towns—Shaxian, Youxi, Datian, Dehua, Xianyou, and Yongtai—as well as large areas of mountainous and rural areas in neighboring counties and cities, making it a fairly large base of operations.
The original Fujian Central Independent Division quickly grew to over 10,000 men after absorbing a large number of local armed forces and newly enlisted soldiers.
However, problems such as uneven quality, disorganized equipment, and inconsistent standards have gradually emerged.
Therefore, at Su Yu's suggestion, the Minzhong Military Region began to reorganize its structure.
First, we must concentrate our elite forces and superior equipment to ensure the combat effectiveness of the three main regiments of the Fujian-Central Independent Division, and strive to maintain consistency in our reporting and ensure stable logistics.
The remaining troops were organized into five independent regiments, with a total strength of approximately 600 to 1000 men, and were deployed in Shaxian, Youxi, Datian, Dehua, and Putian respectively.
Su Yu also took the opportunity to recruit some promising talents from local armed forces, enriching the structure of the two divisional supplementary regiments.
Previously, expanding two divisions into three was a simple operation: Zhang Qiming was promoted to division commander, and the supplementary regiments of the two divisions were replenished with personnel and equipment and then reorganized into main force regiments.
This adds up to one more infantry division with a three-regiment system.
From then on, the commanders of the Northern Expeditionary Anti-Japanese Vanguard also developed a habit of forming supplementary regiments whenever their troops were slightly strengthened.
Later, some division-level units even created three supplementary regiments after their staffing quotas were filled, essentially turning them into a supplementary brigade.
They also established reconnaissance, cavalry, engineer, and medical units under the supplementary brigades. Basically, whatever units existed under the division headquarters, also existed under the brigade headquarters!
The master manages the master, that's right!
As for who started it all?
That can only be blamed on the fact that the Nationalist troops in central and southern Fujian were too weak, and the Red Army swept through the enemy lines with ease, while the people were fed and clothed.
Su Yu had already done his best to allocate more troops to local forces, but he still inadvertently doubled the size of his army.
This was, of course, inseparable from the generous gift of a certain Southern Heavenly King.
After the Battle of Shaxian, the 11th Red Army set off south. Before that, the Special Service Battalion directly under the army headquarters had already crossed the mountains in southern Dehua County and made contact with comrades in the Minnan base area.
However, what Su Yu did not expect was that he originally only wanted this special agent battalion to carry out a preliminary mission to find out the situation in southern Fujian.
When necessary, they can assist local comrades in repelling Kuomintang troops that are encircling and suppressing the base areas.
Because they were so far from the military headquarters, they were granted the right to move freely.
As a result, by the time the main forces of the two divisions reached Dehua from the south, the two county towns of Yongchun and Anxi to the south had already been captured.
After the special operations battalion joined forces with local armed forces, they quickly mobilized village militias to enlist, bringing the total number of soldiers to over two thousand.
Even Nan'an County, west of Quanzhou, was almost captured.
A regular regiment from Quanzhou arrived in the county town ahead of time, which narrowly prevented them from launching an offensive.
Later, after the commander of this regular regiment had secured the city's defenses, he sent out scouts. After some investigation, they discovered that the enemy was mostly a rabble.
They decisively left the city to meet the enemy.
Then he walked right into an ambush and was shot in the head 5 kilometers outside the city.
Even so, the special operations battalion, lacking heavy weapons, still failed to capture the county town.
After receiving these messages, Su Yu suddenly realized that she had been a bit too conservative before.
There isn't a single proper KMT division-level unit in the entire southern Fujian region, so what are we even waiting for?
Therefore, the main force split into two routes. One route marched south from Datian to capture Zhangping, with its advance aimed directly at Longyan. At the same time, a regiment was dispatched to capture Hua'an on the flank.
Another route was led by him personally, heading south from Dehua to attack Nan'an, with his troops aimed directly at Quanzhou.
According to intelligence from the underground Communist Party in Quanzhou, the military strength in southern Fujian is currently weak, with only one understrength infantry brigade in Quanzhou.
Including local security forces and militia, the total strength was only over 3000.
This immediately reminded Su Yu of his experience attacking Fuzhou.
What impressed him most about this experience wasn't actually the siege itself, because he wasn't involved at all.
But the scene of confiscating the supplies afterward, especially the sight of whole boxes of silver dollars being loaded onto trucks, was something he would never forget.
Quanzhou may not be as wealthy as the provincial capital Fuzhou, but it is still a well-known port city with many foreign businessmen and overseas Chinese, so its profits should be quite substantial.
And most importantly, it's much easier to fight here than in Fuzhou!
Zeyuan initially used 3000 soldiers to fight against 6000 Nationalist troops in Fuzhou.
Now the situation has reversed. One of our divisions has more than 6000 men, while the Nationalist army in Quanzhou has only 3000 men.
This was an absolutely perfect start; he even prepared a flying thunder cannon.
According to Su Yu's estimate, the chances of winning this battle are at least 9%.
What he never expected was that this 9% estimate was still too conservative.
The vanguard regiment, lightly armed and with minimal entourage, marched south and, after joining forces with the special operations battalion and local armed forces, quickly captured Nan'an County.
After the main force entered Nan'an County, the vanguard regiment launched a probing attack to the east.
Their mission was to conduct fire reconnaissance, ascertain the enemy's troop strength and firepower configuration, and clear out the surrounding enemy strongholds.
But no one expected that in less than three hours of fighting, the vanguard regiment had only managed to take down a few enemy strongholds.
As a result, the local Party committee recruited a Party member from the army, and only when everyone was in a state of panic did they pretend to accidentally fire a shot.
In an instant, the entire company of soldiers collapsed, and the routed soldiers swept back, creating a huge gap in the defenses of the western part of the city.
The vanguard regiment seized the opportunity and charged forward with all its might, breaking through the enemy lines in one fell swoop.
They followed in the footsteps of the fleeing soldiers and charged straight into the city.
This was something Su Yu couldn't have imagined!
When Wei Lihuang, who was far away in Nanping, received this news, he felt completely numb.
He thought to himself, "Why don't I just faint?"
Bad news keeps coming, one after another, it just won't end.
Left with no other choice, he could only send telegrams to Chen Jitang again and again, urging him to send troops north as soon as possible.
Chen Jitang was also troubled. No matter how much he delayed, so many days had passed, and the team had already assembled and set off.
However, the secret envoys he sent out had not yet made contact with the high-ranking officials in the Fujian-Zhejiang Soviet Area, which made him uneasy.
Fortunately, he had an intelligence station in Quanzhou, and at a critical moment, he had a flash of inspiration.
Su Yu has taken Quanzhou; isn't this an opportunity to make contact with him?
In his eyes, Xun Huaizhou, the legitimate legion commander, had gone north to fight.
The highly decorated Chief of Staff, Su Yu, was naturally the actual commander of the Fujian Red Army.
He was also the commander of the front-line army.
Once the deal is done with him, the Guangdong army can go on a field trip to southern Fujian.
