On this dark and windy night, Jiang Boqing was standing in the operations room looking at a map.

He had retraced the route from Yunding Mountain to Lianhua Mountain, and then to the winding mountain roads at the border of Jimei and Tongan countless times, always feeling that something was wrong, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

In the morning, the Guangdong Army informed him that the Red Army's offensive on the front was very fierce, but it was just a passing fad, probably using a feint attack. He was advised to be on high alert.

As expected, the Red Army, which had initially only been harassing the enemy from the front, suddenly intensified its attack, catching the frontline soldiers off guard.

Many of the ragtag troops that had been reorganized even had deserters. Fortunately, he had prepared a supervisory team in advance, and they dealt a heavy blow, which stabilized the situation.

Why did the Red Army mistakenly focus its attack on the north?

Logically speaking, the Central Army had a more prestigious reputation than the Guangdong Army, and on the surface, the Guangdong Army was the easy target.

Did the Red Army already know the details of the newly formed 10th Army?

So who leaked it?

While deep in thought.

"Bang!" A gunshot rang out from the north. Jiang Boqing paused, his pen still in his hand. He looked up and listened intently for a moment.

Then a few more sporadic gunshots rang out, closer than before.

He put down his pencil and called out towards the door, "Guard battalion, send a few men out to check. It might be a small guerrilla group that has infiltrated. Don't make a big commotion."

Someone answered from outside the door, and the footsteps hurried away.

Jiang Boqing lowered his head again to look at the map, but he couldn't recall that fleeting inspiration.

Just moments later, the gunfire outside did not subside; instead, it became more intense and closer.

The initial sporadic rifle fire turned into a rapid burst of gunfire, interspersed with the muffled thuds of exploding grenades.

Just as he was about to send someone to inquire again, the door to the operations room was suddenly kicked open from the outside.

A staff officer stumbled in, his voice trembling: "Commander! Something terrible has happened! The Red Army... the Red Army has broken in!"

Jiang Boqing frowned: "Is it a guerrilla force? It's no big deal. Send someone to scout it out and make sure they don't cut the telephone line."

"Commander! It's not guerrillas!" The staff officer stamped his foot anxiously. "It's the main force of the Red Army! At least a thousand men!"

Jiang Boqing's hand froze in mid-air, as if someone had pressed the pause button on his entire body.

Then, he realized what was happening and screamed, "Thousands of men? How is that possible? There's no news of the defenses falling from the front. How did the Red Army get in? Did they grow wings?"

"They came from the north, from the territory of the Guangdong Army!"

Jiang Boqing's pupils constricted sharply. He slammed his hand on the table. "Damn it! I knew these warlords were unreliable! When we get back to Nanjing, I'm going to report this to the principal!"

But he didn't have much time to get angry.

The gunfire outside the command post grew louder and closer, and the shouts of Red Army soldiers could be clearly heard mixed with the panicked cries of Nationalist soldiers.

Anyone with even a little war experience knows that the situation has completely collapsed!

The adjutant rushed in and grabbed Jiang Boqing's arm: "Commander, this is not the time to think about these things! The main force is at the front lines, and it's too late to send them back to reinforce. We must retreat immediately!"

Jiang Boqing abruptly shook off his hand, glaring and roaring, "Retreat? No way! The Red Army can't possibly only have this one route. The communications of several regiments at the front are all tied to this post. Once the command post is destroyed, without a leader, the entire defensive line will be finished!"

"And then there's the Guangdong Army. They're secretly colluding with the Red Army. If we show weakness, they'll immediately transform into hungry wolves and pounce on us, tearing our flesh apart! We must hold on!"

Before he could finish speaking, a burst of gunfire suddenly erupted from the east, closer than the commotion from the north, as if it were coming from the next courtyard.

To the east lies the direction of Jimei, their own rear area, and also the place where defenses are most lax.

No one expected that the enemy would sneak in from there.

But someone managed to sneak in from there.

A platoon of over thirty assault troops, taking advantage of the darkness and chaos, quickly scaled over a section of the wall on the east side using A-frame ladders.

They were dressed in Nationalist Army uniforms, but their movements were extremely agile, clearly indicating that they were elite troops who had undergone long-term training.

The platoon leader led the way, followed by a dozen soldiers carrying submachine guns, while the rest of the men tended to the four light machine guns in the unit.

Such fierce firepower was enough to crush all the enemies in the command post.

"Disperse! Destroy any houses you encounter, kill anyone you see!" The platoon leader's order was brief and decisive.

Before they arrived, the chief of staff gave a strict order: except for those who surrendered voluntarily, all the others must be annihilated, leaving no one alive. No Kuomintang member should be allowed to break through the encirclement. Anyone who fails in this duty will be court-martialed!

The soldiers immediately spread out into a standard triangular formation, with one person charging to break through the door, another providing fire support, and a third providing flank and rear support.

If the door was locked, they would kick it open and sweep a burst of bullets inside.

If a light came out of a window, he would throw two grenades in.

Explosions and gunshots erupted simultaneously in every corner of the command post compound. The civilian staff members who were carrying pistols had never seen anything like this before, and many of them were knocked to the ground before they could even draw their guns.

The guard battalion on the north side of the compound heard gunshots coming from the east and then realized that there was a fire in the backyard.

The battalion commander yelled at the top of his lungs, "Turn around! Return to command post!"

But it was too late. They were already under immense pressure from the main force of the Red Army, and with this retreat, their frontal defenses immediately collapsed.

Hundreds of people ran back in a chaotic mess, their organization in disarray and their formation completely broken. As soon as they rushed into the compound, they were riddled with bullets from assault rifles.

When the adjutant pulled Jiang Boqing out of the back door of the operations room, the outside was already in complete chaos.

Several staff officers followed behind them, some carrying document boxes, others frantically stuffing telegram drafts into their pockets.

As Jiang Boqing ran, he turned back and shouted, "Was the coded message burned? Was the radio destroyed? We absolutely cannot leave it to the Red Army!"

A staff officer ran alongside, shouting, "Burn it! The coded messages were burned immediately. The radio station... the radio station has already been bombed!"

They ran down a corridor, turned a corner, and suddenly heard hurried footsteps behind them.

The adjutant turned around and his expression changed drastically.

Several Red Army soldiers carrying submachine guns had already caught up to the corner of the corridor.

"Commander, run!" The adjutant shoved Jiang Boqing into a half-open door and turned to return fire, but was shot down by a burst of submachine gun bullets after only two shots.

Jiang Boqing stumbled into the room and found it to be a storage room filled with miscellaneous items. There was no back door, only a narrow window.

He rushed to the window and looked out. Outside was a narrow alley, and there were vague figures moving around at the entrance.

He took a deep breath and was about to climb out the window when, in his joyful mood, his belly swelled up and he got stuck...
