I Have a Lake as I Walk Through the Courtyard

Chapter 18 Catching Wild Chickens

After riding his bicycle for more than an hour, Lin Feng arrived at Xishan, following the original owner's memories. This place has many pine and cypress trees, especially cypress trees, which are not only top-quality firewood, but also make meat especially fragrant when smoked!

The road up the mountain was difficult to walk, so Lin Feng stored his bicycle by the lake and struggled up the mountain along the path, storing all the scattered pieces of wood into his spatial storage along the way!

In many places, logging is strictly prohibited. In order to find sturdy timber, Lin Feng went deeper and deeper. The fresh air and beautiful scenery made Lin Feng pay no attention to anything else, and his eyes were fixed on the dead wood scattered on the road.

Persistence pays off. After walking for more than half an hour, it gradually got dark. Lin Feng, who had a spatial dimension, was not flustered at all. He had come all this way, and he would not go back until he had collected enough firewood.

As they went deeper into the forest, more and more dead trees fell. Lin Feng didn't mind giving away an axe to some of the still-standing dead trees. After more than an hour, they finally collected enough firewood. At this time, only the last glimmer of light remained on the horizon.

After cutting down a dead tree, Lin Feng suddenly noticed a pile of footprints under it! Upon closer inspection, he realized they belonged to pheasants!

Following the messy footprints, Lin Feng took out his homemade slingshot from his spatial storage, bent over, and quietly searched along the way.

Halfway there, a bush not far away suddenly erupted like a pot boiling over. Lin Feng was startled by everything that happened. He was dumbfounded as he watched the pheasants flying around in all directions. He didn't even know where to shoot his slingshot!

Lin Feng quickly walked behind the bushes, where a large chicken coop appeared before him. At this moment, there was nothing left in the coop except for some chicken feathers. Unwilling to give up, Lin Feng rolled his eyes.

He took out a large bamboo basket from his spatial storage, dug out some earthworms, soaked them in spiritual spring water, and put them in the chicken coop. He then found a wooden stick, propped up the bamboo basket, tied a rope to it, and quietly hid behind a tree.

As darkness fell, Lin Feng, who was hiding behind a tree, rubbed his hands together, preparing to reluctantly return to the city, when a few pheasants stealthily strolled back. Lin Feng's eyes lit up instantly.

A brightly colored pheasant, clearly a male, was much bolder than the hens following behind, and trotted back to its burrow first, showing off the bait inside! It clucked as it ate.

The flock of hens and chicks following behind also seemed unable to resist the temptation, crowding together in the nest to frantically grab food!

Seeing that the time was ripe, Lin Feng suddenly pulled the rope, and the chickens scrambling for food immediately erupted into chaos!

Lin Feng ran quickly towards the chicken coop and caught four pheasants from under the bamboo basket! Lin Feng happily put all the pheasants into his spatial storage. Just as he was about to leave, he noticed that the timid pheasants hadn't run far. They were standing about five or six meters away, staring longingly in the direction of the chicken coop.

Lin Feng then realized that he had seriously underestimated the allure of the spiritual spring water. He simply set up the bamboo basket again, put in some corn kernels that had been soaked in the spiritual spring water, and hid behind the tree again.

What stunned Lin Feng this time was that several pheasants that had just run away seemed to have resigned themselves to their fate. Even though they knew it was a trap, they still foolishly ran over and stared at the corn in the nest like starving ghosts reincarnated.

Lin Feng simply stopped pulling the rope and quietly walked into the flock of chickens, holding a large handful of corn soaked in spiritual spring water. Several pheasants that were eating saw Lin Feng, hesitated for a moment, and then quietly ran towards him. Soon, six pheasants surrounded Lin Feng and frantically pecked at the corn in his hand.

"They really are eating like there's no tomorrow!" Lin Feng grinned from ear to ear. If he had known this would happen, why bother with all that effort? He caught a whole flock of 10 pheasants, and not a single one was caught. He managed to bring them all into his space. To appease the flock, Lin Feng didn't hold back and let them eat their fill.

Catching a brood of pheasants was an unexpected bonus. This gave Lin Feng a more direct understanding of the effects of the spiritual spring water. He glanced regretfully at the sky and hurried down the mountain.

With a brand-new bicycle and brand-new headlights, Lin Feng rode back to the courtyard house. It was already completely dark by then! Even the old man who always stood at the door was nowhere to be seen.

Back inside, Lin Feng pushed his bicycle in as well. As soon as he arrived, he couldn't wait to enter his space, took out some still-steaming food from the storage room, ate a few bites, and then started making a home for the flock of pheasants!

The pheasants, having just changed their environment, were all trembling with fear, huddled together in a ball. Lin Feng moved their original nest to his space and built a simple nest out of wood by the lake. After settling the group, it was already 10 p.m. Lin Feng, who was extremely sleepy, fed them the last bit of spiritual spring water before finally going to sleep.

After a long day of work, Lin Feng slept soundly until dawn. He had just finished get off work and was pushing his bicycle back to his house in a hurry! He had to go into his space to take care of the ten pheasants he had just acquired yesterday. The flock had been frightened by the change of environment and hadn't eaten much all day.

As soon as the bicycle entered the courtyard, the three women were so surprised they couldn't close their mouths. "Lin Feng, is this the bicycle you bought?!"

"Yes, the tickets were given by the leader." Lin Feng was preoccupied with other matters and tried his best not to get entangled with these neighbors.

"You even bought a bicycle, it must have cost a lot of money!" Lin Feng smiled politely, didn't answer, pushed the bike directly into the house, and closed the door.

The change in temperature and environment made the pheasants feel unwell. Lin Feng fetched some spiritual spring water, added a little cornmeal, and presented it to the pheasants. Smelling the aroma, the pheasants finally stirred!

Seeing the pheasants slowly begin to eat, Lin Feng breathed a sigh of relief, fearing that all these beautiful pheasants would die!

Calculating the pheasants' appetite, Lin Feng estimated that the little bit of food he had stored wouldn't be enough for them to eat! It seemed he would have to go to the black market again.

The cabbages and radishes that were planted are ready to be harvested, the chives have been harvested again and again, and the fresh garlic sprouts and scallion sprouts have also sprouted. The resources in the space have become much more abundant.

With garlic sprouts and sauce, Raymond Lam made himself a plate of twice-cooked pork and a plate of stir-fried vegetables. Just as he was about to drive off, he suddenly heard the door open outside.

Lin Feng reluctantly emerged from the space, and as soon as the door opened, two street office staff members walked in.

"Are you Raymond Lam?"

"Yes, is there something you need?"

Two neighborhood committee members shrugged. "Not bad, huh? Just started cooking?"

Lin Feng sighed inwardly, "People's noses are really sharp these days!" "No, I'm a cook, just got back from work!"

"Oh, I see. Someone reported your bicycle as being of dubious origin!"

Lin Feng smiled wryly. These neighbors really don't miss any opportunity!

"Comrade, I work at a scrap metal recycling station. The bicycle receipt was given to me by my supervisor. The bicycle was bought from a state-owned department store, and I have the receipt! I'll bring it over right now."

The two officers waited a short while, then carefully examined the invoice and bicycle registration documents in Lin Feng's hand for a long time. "We'll go to your workplace to verify!"

"Of course! I'll be at the purchasing station up ahead, not far from here!"

The two officers nodded, looked around the room, found nothing, and quickly turned and left.
