Xu Jia walked to her side, holding two cups of tea, and was about to say something.

Shi Luyu looked up first, her eyes still lingering on the closed door, and hurriedly said, "Teaching Assistant Xu, I'm going to the restroom." After saying that, she shoved the teacup into his hand and turned to leave.

Xu Jia stood there with two cups of tea, watching her cross the courtyard and disappear around the corner of the side hall.

Shi Luyu walked very fast, almost jogging.

The cobblestone path was uneven, and she stumbled, grabbing the wall for support before continuing forward. The door burned in her mind as a fervent question mark; she had to confirm whether the person inside was Xu Yuanjia.

She stopped in front of the door.

The wooden door was much heavier than she had imagined, and a layer of dust covered the door knocker, as if it hadn't been opened in a long time. Her fingers hovered above the door knocker, her heart pounding so fast she could hear the blood rushing through her ears.

What if it isn't? What if it is that "Master Jia"?

She pulled her hand back and turned to leave.

The sound of a wooden axle turning came from behind me, heavy and slow, like some large animal opening its eyes in the dark.

Suddenly! A hand reached out from the crack in the door, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her inside.

The door closed behind her, and the world went dark.

Her back bumped against a warm chest, one hand covered her mouth, the other hand gripped her waist, and she was pressed against the door.

Before Shi Luyu could even struggle, she was silenced by a kiss. As the kiss continued, the lips landed on her neck, pressing hard with the sharp tips of the teeth, sliding from her earlobe all the way down to her collarbone.

"Little cat." The voice was low and husky, its breath hot enough to make her skin tremble. "How dare you follow me?"

The edge of the mask dig into her neck. It was metallic, cold, and shaped like an eagle's beak.

"You've been especially naughty these past few days." His lips brushed against her throat with each word, "Since you're here, stay with me for a while."

Shi Luyu could see nothing; the darkness was so thick it seemed almost tangible.

Her hand touched his chest, and she pushed him, but he didn't budge. Her fingers gripped his collar, trying to pull away, but he only pressed her tighter.

"Who are you?" her voice trembled. "Let me go!"

A soft chuckle came from the darkness. His lips moved to her earlobe and gently bit it.

"You came looking for me, don't you know who I am?"

She dared not guess, and at that moment she really wished that her brother Jiajia was here.

Shi Luyu twisted her body desperately, her voice shrill: "Help—!"

The man laughed, his laughter muffled in the crook of her neck, sending a shiver down her spine. His fingers ran through her hair, cupping the back of her head, and pressed her face against his shoulder.

"The person you're looking for isn't here." His voice fell from above her, like a blade coated in honey.

"There is only one... beast."

The air was filled with a strong incense, seeping in through the cracks in the door. It was sweet and heavy, like an invisible veil enveloping her.

Shi Luyu's consciousness began to blur, and his fingers slid off his collar... The last thing he saw before his eyes closed was a blurry, eagle-beak-shaped outline in the darkness.

……

She dreamed that she was lying in a very large bed.

The bed curtains were translucent and white, swaying gently in the air like ripples on the surface of water.

Someone was close to her. She couldn't see his face, but she could feel his warm, gentle breath on her neck.

His lips brushed against her ear, his voice as low as if it came from the bottom of a deep well:

"Good job, sweetie."

Her fingers twitched weakly.

"Why are you so obedient?" He drew circles on her cheek with his thumb, the movement as gentle as caressing a precious object.

The bed curtains swayed, then swayed again. She didn't know if it was the wind or something else.

"I'll spend some quality time with you when I get home tonight. I'll be busy later." His voice was tinged with laughter, as if he were coaxing a child who wouldn't go to sleep.

She seemed to want to say something; her lips moved, but no sound came out.

"You'll miss your brother, won't you?" the person asked her affectionately, then whispered a warning.

"Don't get too close to Xu Jia, understand?"

"Do you understand, sweetie?"

She didn't answer. Her consciousness sank with that one sentence, sinking into a deeper, dreamless darkness.

……

"Lulu."

A sound came from a great distance, intermittent and faint.

"Lulu? Wake up."

She opened her eyes. The sunlight was so bright it made her squint. There were several faces in front of her: a round-faced girl, a boy wearing glasses, and Xu Jia. He was squatting next to the bench, his brows slightly furrowed, holding a bottle of mineral water with the cap unscrewed.

"Are you alright?" Xu Jia's voice was very low. "You were in the restroom for too long, and when I went to look for you, I found you asleep under this tree. Did you get heatstroke?"

Shi Luyu blinked slowly.

Sunlight, leaves, incense smoke, a classmate's face. A side hall, a wooden door, masks in the darkness—it all felt like a shattered dream.

"Thank you everyone..." Her voice was hoarse and sounded unfamiliar even to herself. "I'm fine, maybe...maybe I'm a little tired."

The students breathed a sigh of relief and gradually dispersed. Someone patted her on the shoulder and told her to take care of herself.

She propped herself up on the bench, and her lower back ached. The ache... didn't feel like it was caused by sleeping in the wrong position under the tree; it felt more like something had been pushed open from her bones.

The event was almost over, and the project team was calling everyone to gather and get on the bus.

Shi Luyu stood up from the bench, her knees buckled, and she fell forward. The muscles on the inside of her thighs ached, along with a burning, tearing pain in a certain area.

Her face turned pale instantly.

What's going on! That dream...?

Those swaying bed curtains, the whispers in my ear, the warm breaths—was it all a dream?
