Xu Yuanjia reached out and put his arm around her waist, pulling her into his embrace so that she could lean against his chest.

Shi Luyu's back was pressed against his chest, and his heartbeat, fast and slow, could be heard through the two layers of clothing.

He rested his chin on her shoulder, his gaze lingering on her feet. One of the laces on her canvas shoes was loose, and the shoes were stained with red mud from the border village.

He bent down, hooked his fingers around the shoelace knot, and gently pulled, taking off her shoe. He did the same with the other one.

Shi Luyu's feet were freed from her shoes, her socks were removed, and her toes curled up in the air.

Xu Yuanjia placed his palm on her foot, grasped her entire foot, and slowly pushed forward along the arc of her sole, starting from the arch of her foot with his thumb.

"How far did you walk?" His voice came from behind her ear, low and hoarse from the tips of his hair. "Your feet are swollen."

Shi Luyu looked down at her feet. The one he was holding looked particularly small, with clean toes.

His fingers were long and strong, with distinct knuckles and thin calluses on the pads. He massaged her from her heels down to her soles, applying pressure to the sore spots.

"Hmm..." She unconsciously made a very soft nasal sound, then bit her lip and swallowed the sound back.

Xu Yuanjia's fingers paused for a moment on the sole of her foot, then continued massaging. His thumb went around the ankle bone, pushing upwards along the outer tendons until he reached a point where the muscle was sore, then pressed down firmly.

Shi Luyu gripped his trouser leg with her fingers.

"pain?"

"It's sour..." she said.

"It should be sour." He said with a smile, but his fingers didn't stop.

His fingertips slid from the instep of her foot to between her toes, pinching each one individually.

Shi Luyu twisted her body, trying to pull her foot out of his hand.

"Be good and don't move." Xu Yuanjia's voice was calm and unhurried as his fingers tightened, gripping her ankle.

"Brother's injured leg hurts so much. It hurts when you move."

Shi Luyu froze, too afraid to move.

His fingers slowly moved up from her ankle, past the fibula on the outside of her calf, his fingertips pressing into the gaps in the muscles. The skin there was thinner and more delicate than the instep; his calloused fingers brushed against it, and Shi Luyu, feeling a tingling sensation, slid a little closer to him.

His fingers continued upwards, sliding down his calves and down to the back of his knees.

Shi Luyu suddenly jumped up and ran two steps away.

"No, brother, someone's here!" Her eyes quickly glanced toward the kitchen.

Chai Ye's figure was still standing in front of the stove, the lid of the medicine pot bobbing slightly from the steam, making a soft knocking sound.

Xu Yuanjia's hand froze in mid-air. He glanced at the kitchen, then turned back to look at her. He raised an eyebrow, and a slow smile crept across his lips, that carefree grin returning to his face.

"So you mean... it's okay as long as no one's around?"

Shi Luyu was speechless after hearing his words. She opened her mouth, wanting to say, "That's not what I meant," but found that no matter how she tried to respond, it wouldn't be right.

Her face turned red from the base of her neck to her forehead, and her ears were so hot they could fry an egg on them.

Xu Yuanjia chuckled softly as he looked at her embarrassed and flustered appearance. He stood up, leaning on the sofa armrest, and walked towards the bathroom. When he passed the kitchen doorway, he stopped and leaned lazily against the door frame.

"Brother," his voice was neither too loud nor too soft, just loud enough for the people in the kitchen to hear, "you can leave after you finish decocting the medicine."

Chai Ye's voice came from the kitchen: "Yes... no, cough cough, I know." The first half of the sentence seemed like an instinctive reaction, but the second half took an abrupt turn.

Xu Yuanjia withdrew his gaze, pushed open the bathroom door, and went inside. The sound of water soon began to fill the air.

Shi Luyu stood alone in the living room, her face still flushed. She took two deep breaths, then turned and went into the kitchen.

"Brother Chai Ye, let me help you."

Chai also stepped aside, making room for her on half of the stove. His gaze swept across her face, but he didn't say anything, handing her the long-handled spoon for stirring.

"Keep an eye on the fire, and add water when it dries up."

Shi Luyu took the medicine pot, placed a rag under it, and lifted the lid to examine it. The dark brown medicine was bubbling inside, emitting a bitter herbal smell. She stirred it with a long-handled spoon, added half a bowl of water, and then put the lid back on.

Steam billowed out from the gap in the lid, and her fingers got a little closer to the rim of the can; the scalding steam burned the back of her hand. She jerked her hand back, a small red patch already visible on the back.

Chai frowned.

Shi Luyu turned around and walked to the sink, turned on the tap, and rinsed her scalded hand under the cold water. After about five minutes, she turned off the water, dried her hand with a paper towel, and went back to the stove. She picked up the long-handled spoon and continued stirring the medicine.

Shiba leaned against the cabinet on the other side of the kitchen, arms crossed, watching her complete this series of actions.

He originally looked down on this woman.

From the first time he saw her at the border camp, he felt that this woman was trouble.

Since ancient times, bewitching women have been believed to bewitch hearts. In his mind, he categorized Shi Luyu as the kind of woman who would affect his plans for important matters.

But now he watched her standing in front of the stove, not making a fuss even though she was burned, her hands red and swollen but still carefully decocting the medicine, doing every step meticulously: first turning down the heat and then stirring to prevent the dregs from settling at the bottom and burning the pot.

Chai remained silent for a while.

"The dregs need to be filtered out," he said, taking a fine mesh strainer from the drawer and placing it on the empty bowl.

Shi Luyu nodded, used a damp cloth to hold the medicine pot, and poured the decoction into a bowl through a strainer. The dark brown liquid swirled in the bowl, steaming hot, and the bitter smell permeated the entire kitchen.

Chai watched as she placed the bowl on the tray, with a small dish of fruit candies next to it, which she had somehow found in the cupboard.

Is this... because you're afraid I'll find the medicine too bitter?

Chai glanced at Tang again before taking off his apron and draping it over the back of the chair. "Just turn off the stove in ten minutes. I'm leaving now."

Shi Luyu saw him to the door. She opened the door, stepped aside to make way for Chai Ye, and after he stepped out, she leaned against the doorframe and whispered goodbye:

"Be careful on the road, brother."

Chai also paused for a moment in the corridor.

He turned around and saw the woman standing in the doorway. She was wearing a wrinkled shirt, her hands were red, and her hair was a little frizzy from the steam in the kitchen. She was gentle and quiet.

The corridor lights shone from behind her, casting a soft, warm glow on her silhouette. She looked up at him, her eyes showing neither fear nor flattery, only sincerity.

Chai was silent for a moment, then nodded in response, "Yes. Sorry to bother you."

He turned around and strode towards the stairwell. His footsteps echoed in the stairwell for a few moments before fading away.

Shi Luyu closed the door, picked up the tray, and walked into the living room. The medicine bowl was placed on the coffee table, and the candy dish was placed next to it. Just as she was about to turn around to call Xu Yuanjia, the bathroom door opened.

Xu Yuanjia came out.

He was only wearing a bath towel. His hair wasn't dry yet; water droplets dripped from the ends onto his shoulders, then down the curve of his collarbone. The gauze on his right leg had been changed; it was dry, clean, and there was no bleeding.

His skin was slightly red from the steaming hot water, and he looked more energetic than before.

But he was holding something in his hand.

Shi Luyu's gaze fell upon it, and her brain immediately went blank.

It was a small bra. White cotton with delicate lace trim. It was wet, dripping water, and he held it between his fingers like he was carrying a drowning rabbit.

Those were the clothes she had taken off while showering last night and put in the laundry basket. She had planned to wash them this morning, but she left for the border before dawn and didn't have time.

"Why is my brother holding mine..." Her voice caught in her throat, "...and why is it wet?"

Xu Yuanjia looked down at what he was holding, then looked up at her. His expression was as innocent as a cat caught stealing dried fish but not realizing it had done anything wrong.

"Oh, I accidentally got it dirty inside, so I just washed it for you." Xu Yuanjia tilted his head, his wet hair hanging down in front of his forehead, covering half of his brow bone.

Shi Luyu's voice rose a little, her cheeks burning red, "How did you get...my..."

She couldn't continue.

The man's lips curled into a wicked smile, deliberately trying to see her blush.

"you guess."
