After Bao Dequan's case was settled, Qin Fei handed over Wen Chengjie's materials to the higher authorities.
On the day the results came out, Wen Nian stood outside the office building and glanced at Wen Zhaoye from afar. She didn't walk over or say anything; she just stood there for a few seconds, then turned and left.
Wen Zhaoye didn't look at her. He was squatting in his grandmother's yard, flipping through a pile of old newspapers. "Two-year suspension," Qin Fei said on the phone. "That kid Wen Chengjie got off easy. If it weren't for his good attitude in admitting his guilt, he wouldn't have been able to get away with it for three to five years."
Wen Zhaoye folded the newspaper and responded. "There's one more thing," Qin Fei's tone suddenly changed, "We found an encrypted number on Bao Dequan's phone. The registered owner is Lin's Culture in the provincial capital."
Wen Zhaoye paused for a moment while holding his phone.
"Lin family culture?" he asked.
"It's Lin Boyuan's company," Qin Fei said. "The number has been used for several years, and Bao Dequan calls it every month. I can't control what's going on in the provincial capital, so be careful."
After hanging up the phone, Wen Zhaoye stood in the yard, staring blankly at the pile of old newspapers on the ground.
I glanced back into the room. Grandma was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding the red cloth bag in her hand. Inside the bag was a broken bracelet, with the words "Tian Kuo" engraved on the inside. "Grandma, can I take a look at that bracelet?"
Grandma looked up at him and nodded.
Wen Zhaoye entered the room, knelt beside the bed, and took the red cloth package. He carefully opened it; inside lay two pieces of broken jade. He picked one up, his fingers tracing the characters "Tian Kuo" (meaning "vast sky"). "Dad..."
He said it softly.
Footsteps sounded at the door. Sun Bo'an stood in the courtyard carrying fruit, followed Wen Zhaoye's gaze to the red cloth bag, and paused for a moment.
"Your dad's bracelet?" he asked.
Wen Zhaoye nodded.
Sun Bo'an placed the fruit by the courtyard wall, walked to the door, squatted down, lit a cigarette, and took a couple of puffs before speaking: "I heard some rumors about your father when I was young."
Wen Zhaoye looked up at him. Sun Bo'an stubbed out his cigarette, squatted down next to Wen Zhaoye, and said in a low voice, "The Lin family in the provincial capital might know something."
"The Lin family?"
"Yes," Sun Bo'an said. "Thirty years ago, your father stayed in the provincial capital for a period of time and had contact with the Lin family. I don't know the specifics. But I have an old friend who used to work at the provincial antique association. He said that the last people your father saw before he disappeared were from the Lin family."
Wen Zhaoye tightened his grip on the broken jade.
"The Lin family is still in the provincial capital, and Lin Boyuan is the head of the family." Sun Bo'an looked at him. "You want to investigate?" "Yes." Wen Zhaoye didn't hesitate. Sun Bo'an was silent for a moment, then stood up and dusted off his pants. "Then tomorrow, I'll take you to meet someone."
"Who?"
"He's an old fogey who's been living in the provincial capital for forty years," Sun Bo'an said. "He has old photos of your father."
Wen Zhaoye stood up, carefully wrapped the broken jade pieces, and put them into the inside pocket of his coat. "Uncle, thank you."
Sun Bo'an waved his hand, turned and walked out, but stopped after a couple of steps, turned back and glanced at him: "Does your grandmother know about your father?" "No," Wen Zhaoye said, "I didn't tell her."
"Then let's not talk about it," Sun Bo'an said. "Some things, the less you know, the easier it is to live." He left, his figure disappearing at the end of the alley.
Wen Zhaoye stood in the courtyard, took out his phone, and looked at the call log. Qin Fei's call had ended, and only one line remained on the screen: Encrypted Number, Lin's Culture.
He put away his phone, went inside, and squatted down next to his grandmother.
"Grandma, can I have this bracelet?"
Grandma looked at him, remained silent for a moment, and nodded: "Keep it. It'll be a treasured possession for me."
Wen Zhaoye put the red cloth bag back in his pocket, stood up, and looked out the window.
The sky in the direction of the provincial capital was hazy and obscured.
He took out his phone and sent a message to Qin Fei: "Help me look up Lin's Culture, something from thirty years ago."
Qin Fei quickly replied: "Thirty years ago?" "Yes."
"Okay, I'll give it a try."
Wen Zhaoye put his phone back in his pocket, then took out the red cloth bag, opened it, and looked at the two pieces of broken jade.
At the break, he suddenly noticed several very fine dark red lines, which didn't look like it was broken by a fall, but rather like it was forcibly broken by some force.
He held the broken jade pieces up to the light and examined them for a long time.
"Dad, where did you go?"
No one answered him.
In the courtyard, the wind rustled the jasmine leaves.
He collected the broken jade pieces, walked out of the courtyard, squatted in front of the jasmine pot, and ruffled the soil. The soil was a bit dry, so he picked up the watering can and watered it.
"Don't let it die," Grandma's voice came from inside the house. "I won't," Wen Zhaoye said.
He stood up, dusted off his hands, and looked at the sky outside the yard.
The direction of the provincial capital was shrouded in a hazy gray, making it impossible to see clearly.
But he knew he would have to go sooner or later.
He took out his phone, found Sun Bo'an's number, and sent a message: "What time tomorrow?"
Sun Bo'an replied, "I'll pick you up at six in the morning." Wen Zhaoye put away his phone and glanced at the red cloth bag again.
"Dad, wait for me."
