Chapter 179 Unexpected Visit
When Lin Zhiyao woke up the next day, her nun's habit was still lying on the ground, wrinkled and worn. The already sparse fabric was now just a small clump after being worn down.
Thinking of last night, her face flushed slightly.
For the next few days, Lin Zhiyao lived a similar life to others, mainly reading pharmacology books at home. However, Shen Jin was by her side, and occasionally he would take her out for a stroll or to the hospital for check-ups.
Lin Zhiyao had a lot of free time, so she quickly finished reading the pharmacology book.
She turned to the last page, ran her fingertips over the embossed title on the back cover, and confirmed that there was no more content to read.
Lin Zhiyao placed the book on her lap, turned her head towards Shen Jin, and said, "I've finished reading it."
Shen Jin was sitting by the window flipping through a document when he heard this. He looked up and said, "Yao Yao is so smart, she's faster than I expected."
"No, I'm just killing time." Lin Zhiyao put the book aside. "By the way, could you take me to your mother's pharmacy to look at some other books? I remember touching a few that I found quite interesting last time."
Shen Jin closed the file. "Now?"
Lin Zhiyao nodded.
Shen Jin stood up, walked up to her, took her hand, and said, "Come on."
The pharmacy still smelled the same—dust mixed with dried herbs, cool and refreshing.
As soon as Lin Zhiyao entered the room, she let go of Shen Jin's hand and slowly walked in, holding onto the frame. Her fingertips traced the Braille labels along the edge of the wooden frame, identifying the categories on them.
Shen Jin stood at the door for a while when his mobile phone suddenly rang.
He answered the phone, said something, and then said to Lin Zhiyao, "I'm going out to make a call, I'll be right back."
Lin Zhiyao hummed in agreement, her attention now entirely focused on the shelves.
She touched a few thick books, pulled them out, and flipped through them.
It's a type of food preparation I haven't seen before.
Having found the book she wanted to read, Lin Zhiyao, as usual, simply left.
But Shen Jin wasn't there at the moment, so she strolled a few more steps forward as if she were just wandering around.
Suddenly, her finger touched a corner where some odds and ends were piled up, unlike the other shelves which were neatly arranged.
Lin Zhiyao squatted down and touched a hardcover notebook. The cover was worn and the corners were curled up.
Lin Zhiyao picked it up with some curiosity, opened it, and read the Braille lines pressed into the paper with her fingertips. The handwriting was a bit messy, probably handwritten and then copied. The content was not a prescription, but more like a personal note.
"...Today I treated a woman with red and swollen eyes. I prescribed white chrysanthemum and cassia seeds, and she improved after three days. She asked me if I wanted a thank you gift, and I said no, but I was still forced to give her a basket of eggs..."
Lin Zhiyao flipped through a few more pages, mostly similar medical records, occasionally interspersed with a few words of insight into medicinal herbs. It seemed to be Shen's mother's medical notes from back then, and also had some diary-like characteristics.
She closed the notebook, not stacking it with the other books, but secretly putting it inside her clothes to hide it.
Lin Zhiyao thought she should secretly find out what kind of person Shen's mother was, and maybe she could even find records of Shen Jin's childhood in the records, so she didn't want to tell Shen Jin.
Shen Jin pushed the door open and came in. "Have you chosen? Is this all?"
"Okay, that's all." Lin Zhiyao stood up, holding the books.
Shen Jin walked over, took the book from her arms, and flipped through it. "I'll help you carry it."
On the way back, Lin Zhiyao sat in the passenger seat with her notebook in her lap.
Luckily, the weather is getting cooler now, and I'm wearing more clothes, otherwise I would definitely have been exposed.
Shen Jin was indeed busy for the next few days.
Sometimes he would leave early in the morning and not return until evening; other times he would come back for a short while at noon, kiss her a few times, and then leave again.
Lin Zhiyao was happy to have some peace and quiet.
I flipped through those few books on food preparation, made a rough note of the table of contents, but found them less interesting than that notebook, so I took it out and slowly read it from beginning to end.
The notes were mostly medical records. Shen's mother wrote in a plain style, occasionally mentioning anecdotes from patients, such as someone bringing her a basket of oranges or someone fixing her leaky roof. Lin Zhiyao read intently, her fingertips moving across the pages, and before she knew it, she had turned to the second half and read most of it.
Shen Jin was not home that afternoon.
Lin Zhiyao sat on the sofa in the living room, her notebook spread out on her lap. The sunlight outside the window warmed her shoulders, and the only sound in the room was the soft rustling of her turning the pages.
Doorbell rang.
Lin Zhiyao tilted her head, thinking that Shen Jin had forgotten to bring his keys when he came back.
But the footsteps stopped at the door; they were those of a stranger, leather shoes clicking on the floor tiles, completely different from Shen Jin's.
Lin Zhiyao's eyes showed wariness.
"Miss Lin?" The person stopped in the entryway without going inside. "I am Mr. Gu's lawyer, surnamed Zhou. I apologize for the intrusion, but I would like to discuss some matters with you privately."
Lin Zhiyao closed the notebook and placed it on the sofa armrest, her fingertips pressing against the cover. "Gu Yuanshao's lawyer? When did he hire a lawyer? How come I didn't know?"
Attorney Zhou smiled and said, "Mr. Gu entrusted me with this job before he returned to China. I have been trying to contact him for the past few days, but I couldn't reach him. Later, I found out that he might have encountered some problems."
Lin Zhiyao did not respond.
Attorney Zhou took a document out of his briefcase and laid it out on the coffee table. "Ms. Lin, I know you have difficulty seeing, so I can read it to you. This is the complete timeline of Mr. Gu's identity theft, as well as evidence of Mr. Shen's falsified identity. His resume, education, and professional qualifications abroad are all problematic."
Lin Zhiyao listened without any expression on her face, "Why are you telling me all this?"
Attorney Zhou said, "Mr. Gu is currently suspected of being in danger, and as his legal representative, I have an obligation to ensure his personal safety. Ms. Lin, you are also a victim. If you are willing to cooperate, we can work together to resolve this matter."
Lin Zhiyao was silent for a moment, then said, "I don't believe what you're saying. I know Shen Jin better than you do what he's like."
Attorney Zhou did not continue arguing, but simply placed his business card on the coffee table. "If you change your mind, you can contact me anytime. My phone number is on this business card; you can confirm it by touching it."
"And..." Attorney Zhou said, taking out a photo from his pocket. Knowing that Lin Zhiyao couldn't see, he explained to her, "This is information about your family. Ms. Lin, you are not alone. You have relatives in Singapore. They all said they miss you and are willing to take care of the child left behind by their eldest brother. They just didn't know you were still alive."
After finishing his speech, Attorney Zhou got up to take his leave.
The living room fell silent again.
Lin Zhiyao remained seated, her fingers still resting on the cover of the notebook.
The sunlight was warm on the back of her hand, making it feel a little hot. She slowly exhaled, ignoring the business card.
But Lin Zhiyao couldn't help but pick up the photo. It was blurry, but there was a number on the back, which was probably the family's contact information.
family?
How could she possibly have family?
Grandpa Gu clearly said that her whole family was dead.
Lin Zhiyao picked up the notebook again.
But my mind was still a bit jumbled up. I fumbled through a few pages but couldn't get into anything, so I flipped back to where I had left off and forced myself to keep reading.
Lin Zhiyao flipped through several pages of medical records, feeling agitated.
Suddenly, my fingertip touched a piece of text that was different from the previous ones.
The handwriting was more illegible than before, and there were several blurry rubbings, as if the hand was trembling when writing, indicating that the writer was in a very intense emotional state at the time.
Lin Zhiyao slowed down and touched each row one by one.
"...A blinding agent, made from datura flowers and datura seeds, combined with cinnabar and raw aconite, processed and then used in medicine. Those who take it will experience blurred vision, gradual loss of sight, and irreversible..."
Lin Zhiyao paused for a moment.
She continued touching downwards, and then a longer passage of text followed, written in a completely different tone, as if she were talking to herself.
"...I did something wrong. The old man wanted me to use this medicine on someone, and I did it. I harmed someone, and now the retribution is coming... The old man told me that this medicine will also be used on me, and I can't escape it. I can still write for a few more days, but I'm afraid I'll go blind and won't be able to write anything anymore. I'm writing this down. I'll bear the consequences of my sins, but Shen Jin is still young..."
The writing stopped here, and then there was a repeated section of writing, as if it was added later, with more pressure than before, leaving dents on the paper.
"...The old man is afraid that I will leave evidence and will kill me sooner or later. If I die, and Shen Jinruo comes back and sees this, he will know what happened to his mother."
Lin Zhiyao's fingertips hovered over the last few words, remaining motionless for a long time.
The sunlight slowly moved from her shoulders to her knees. The living room was very quiet, so quiet that Lin Zhiyao could almost hear her own heart pounding wildly.
Lin Zhiyao trembled as she pulled her hand back from the page, closed the notebook, and hugged it to her chest, her knuckles clenched until they turned white.
Shen Jin's mother became blind later in life, and the medicine that caused her blindness was something that Old Master Gu had her find to use on others, and later she used it on herself as well.
Grandpa Gu was afraid she would leave evidence, so he wanted to kill her to silence her.
Lin Zhiyao closed her eyes.
This was completely different from the Grandpa Gu she remembered, but what could Shen's mother possibly hide in these notes?
and……
If that's the case, then it makes sense that she's felt something was off sometimes since she was a child.
For example, even though Grandpa Gu knew what Gu Yuanshao's attitude towards her was, he still refused to dissolve her marriage.
For example, those family members who suddenly appear might actually be real.
If even an outsider like Attorney Zhou could find out, how could Grandpa Gu not be able to?
It can only mean they deliberately concealed it.
Perhaps Grandpa Gu had a bigger plan back then, but he suddenly fell ill and passed away, which brought everything to an abrupt end.
So, most importantly, does Shen Jin know all this?
How could a lawyer not find out something that a lawyer could find in less than half a month? Shen Jin had been secretly planning for so long and had painstakingly gained Gu Yuanshao's trust abroad. How could he not find out?
The more Lin Zhiyao thought about it, the colder her heart became.
