"sorry!"

Lin Zhiyao, fully dressed, clutched the corner of the blanket, her voice soft yet urgent, "I've troubled you too much; you've been busy all night and I've been taking up your bed..."

"It's nothing," Shen Jin waved his hand casually. "Anyway, I didn't sleep either."

His words only made Lin Zhiyao feel more ashamed.

"Um... your sheets and duvet cover..."

Lin Zhiyao blushed and thought about it for a long time. Suddenly, she thought of something and stammered, "Shall I help you wash? I've been lying in my outer clothes all night... they're so dirty. I've already delayed your work, it would be too much to make you clean up yourself..."

"Need not."

Shen Jin stood up, gave her a deep look, walked to the window and opened the curtains, letting in sunlight. "I'll have the housekeeper come and tidy up every day, and they can handle it then."

"But--"

"Don't you have to go to school later?" Shen Jin turned around and glanced at her. "Don't be late."

Lin Zhiyao then remembered to check the time; her phone screen showed 8:23.

She hurriedly threw off the covers and got out of bed. Her feet touched the wooden floor, and she paused for a moment because of the refreshing feeling all over her body.

Lin Zhiyao looked down at herself, then at the pile of bedding on the bed.

She didn't wear a nightgown last night; she slept in a sweater and jeans all night, covered with a blanket. Logically, she should have been much hotter, but she felt dry and comfortable, without any sticky sweat.

The thought flashed through my mind quickly, before I could think about it deeply.

Shen Jin had already picked up his car keys. "Let's go, I'll give you a ride. It's on my way."

"No need, no need, I can take the subway myself, you've already—"

"I already said it was on my way."

Shen Jin opened the door, letting in a gust of cold wind. He glanced at her and said, "When I carried you upstairs last night, your access card for the apartment complex fell on the floor. I picked it up and put it on the shoe rack."

Lin Zhiyao's attention was instantly diverted, and she quickly went downstairs to get her access card. Shen Jin followed behind, and the car was already started.

The car was parked outside the east gate of the school.

Lin Zhiyao unbuckled her seatbelt, said thank you, and was about to get out of the car when she looked up and saw a person standing at the entrance of the laboratory building. It was Professor Michael Harris.

He was carrying a briefcase and looking in this direction.

Lin Zhiyao quickly closed the car door and hurried over. "Good morning, Professor!"

The professor's gaze shifted from the black Cayenne emblem, which hadn't yet disappeared from view, a slight smile playing on his lips. "Did someone bring you here? Your boyfriend?"

Lin Zhiyao's face flushed, and she quickly waved her hand: "No, no, it's my roommate. We live in the same building, and he brought me here today since he was passing by."

"Oh, roommate? That's good, at least you have someone to look after you."

The professor nodded, his tone unreadable. "By the way, did you see the document I sent you last night? We're going to the research station tomorrow, and I've compiled a few key points for data collection in advance."

Lin Zhiyao stopped in her tracks.

She fell asleep in the car last night... she fell asleep in the car last night.

I woke up in Shen Jin's bed. I rushed over in a panic this morning and didn't even touch my phone.

"I—" Lin Zhiyao blushed, "I'm sorry, Professor, I wasn't feeling well last night, so I went back to rest and didn't have time to check my phone..."

She wasn't exactly lying, since she had fallen into a deep sleep in the car and was indeed feeling unwell.

The professor adjusted his glasses: "It's alright, don't be nervous. Come to my office after you finish today's experiment, and I'll go over it with you in person. It's more efficient than you reading the documents yourself."

"Okay, okay! Thank you, Professor!"

Lin Zhiyao nodded repeatedly and followed the professor into the laboratory building.

Lin Zhiyao's days were filled with experiments and literature reviews. She visited several sample sites and recorded a set of control data for her team members. By the time she finished her work, it was already past 4 p.m.

She tidied up the workbench, took a deep breath, and knocked on the professor's office door.

"Come in," the professor's voice came from inside.

Lin Zhiyao pushed open the door and entered. The professor gestured for her to sit down opposite him, and a folder was already open on the computer screen. "Come on, let me explain the procedures for tomorrow's research station."

For the next two hours, the professor talked about the operational procedures for field sampling and the format requirements for data recording, and also showed Lin Zhiyao cases from previous research stations.

Lin Zhiyao listened attentively and took notes, occasionally asking questions. The professor answered patiently and even cracked a few jokes, creating a relaxed atmosphere.

"You have good comprehension skills," the professor said as he closed his notebook. "I'll be waiting for you at the entrance of the lab building at 8:30 tomorrow morning. I'll drive you; just bring your laptop."

"Okay, Professor." Lin Zhiyao stood up, clutching her notebook. "I'll head back now to prepare the materials for tomorrow."

The professor waved his hand: "Go on, get some rest."

It was already completely dark when Lin Zhiyao walked out of the laboratory building.

She took out her phone and glanced at it. The screen was clean; there were no messages from Shen Jin in the notification bar, nor any missed calls.

She felt a strange, inexplicable sense of loss.

Lin Zhiyao took the subway back to Cherry Street alone. When she opened the door, the living room light was on, but no one was on the sofa.

There was a note on the coffee table, with neat and clean handwriting:

"I need to go on a business trip for two or three days due to some urgent matters. There's food in the fridge; you can just heat it up in the microwave. Remember to lock the door. — Shen Jin"

Lin Zhiyao stood there for a while, holding the note, reading the words on it twice. Then she took out her phone and sent a message to Shen Jin: "The professor has confirmed that he will take me to the research station tomorrow, which will probably take about two days."

After sending the message, a minute later, the other party simply replied with a cold, indifferent single word: "Hmm."

Lin Zhiyao stared at it for a few seconds, feeling a little unspeakable.

She wanted to ask him where he was going on his business trip and when he would be back, but the reply was too cold, like a wall standing there, making her feel intimidated.

Lin Zhiyao typed a few words and then deleted them, but in the end she didn't send anything. She locked the screen and put her phone on the table.
