The new house that He's father prepared for Lin Mian and the others was a detached house with two floors. Opposite the master bedroom was not a guest room, but a nursery with toys hanging on it.

He Duoye gave a cold laugh at the room to show his attitude.

The master bedroom looked normal, with a simple and refreshing style that was very comfortable to look at. Lin Mian touched the bed, and putting aside personal grudges, the room actually suited her aesthetic taste quite well.

There's even a small, separate courtyard below the building, with a wooden pavilion and white swing chairs, which is quite pleasant.

After looking at the scenery outside the window, Lin Mian turned around and found that He Duoye had already removed the bedside lamp and was now taking apart the socket panel behind it.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

He Duoye glanced at the power outlet and said, "Check if there are any hidden cameras."

Lin Mian was immediately startled and couldn't help but turn her head to look around. After He Duoye said that, Lin Mian felt that the room was no longer fresh and comfortable at all, and she felt that there might be surveillance cameras in every corner.

They checked the house thoroughly, from top to bottom, especially the bathroom, to make sure there were no hidden cameras or anything like that.

In the evening, the housekeeper came to invite them to dinner.

The housekeeper of the old house is quite young. His surname is Liu, and he looks to be in his forties. The original housekeeper was too old and had already retired. This one is his son.

Butler Liu didn't say much; he just silently led the way.

Dinner was Chinese food, clearly divided into two groups. One group was light and simple, almost entirely vegetables, catering to He's father's taste. The other group was made to Lin Mian's taste, with every dish being one of her favorites, and the flavors were perfectly balanced.

Lin Mian found it terrifying to eat. She had only met He's father for the first time today, but he had already figured out all her tastes and habits.

They might even have a clear understanding of her personality, behavioral preferences, and family background...

She knew before that He's father was a terrifying person, but now she realized that he was even more terrifying than she had imagined.

After dinner, He Duoye took Lin Mian for a stroll around.

The old house was not as large as He Duoye's manor, but its interior was much more complex, with many winding paths, beautifully maintained flowers, plants and trees everywhere, and a stream that was neither man-made nor natural.

Too many trees can obstruct your view and make it easy to get lost.

Lin Mian followed He Duoye and toured the entire courtyard, gaining a basic understanding of this maze-like garden and memorizing its three entrances and exits.

They would be staying in the old house for the next few days. After their walks, they would return to the small building. Lin Mian was thinking about the surveillance cameras and didn't notice the difference in the courtyard.

He Duoye stopped and looked at the swing chair.

Next to it was a potted green plant, a Podocarpus macrophyllus that He's father had just finished tending to this afternoon. The branches had been bent and fixed into a beautiful shape with wire, and the needles had been trimmed very neatly.

It blended in with the other green plants without standing out, so naturally that Lin Mian didn't even notice it at first.

He Duoye looked at it for two seconds, then looked away.

Even though she had already checked the house, Lin Mian still didn't feel safe. Before taking a shower, she touched every single tile in the bathroom. After quickly finishing her shower, she lay in bed, but Lin Mian couldn't fall asleep.

She felt like she had entered some dangerous game instance, and He's father was the sinister and ruthless big boss, watching her and He Duoye from the shadows.

She couldn't sleep, and neither could He Duoye.

After Lin Mian rolled over again, He Duoye pulled her into his arms: "You've practically broken the bed."

Lin Mian calmed down, rested her head on He Duoye's arm, and asked him, "When you were little, were you scared sleeping here?"

He Duoye asked, "What are you afraid of?"

"Your father, and this place."

He Duoye said, "I'm not afraid."

This place is indeed dangerous and makes one feel unsafe, but once you leave this old house, the outside world is just as dangerous. He Duoye has lived in this kind of environment since birth.

He was never afraid of these things.

Patting Lin Mian's back, He Duoye said, "If you're not used to it, we'll move out tomorrow."

Lin Mian shook her head: "Let me stay for two more days and get familiar with the surroundings."

He Duoye took her for a stroll through the maze-like courtyard, wasn't it just to help her remember the way? Maybe in a few days, she'll need to run around in there.

He Duoye: "You don't need to be afraid. With me here, if anyone provokes you, just go up and slap them. I'll cover for you."

Lin Mian thought of He Duoye's father, but she dared not slap the old man.

After chatting for a while, Lin Mian was less nervous and uneasy than before, but she still couldn't fall asleep and kept tossing and turning.

He Duoye suddenly got up from the bed and said to Lin Mian in a puzzled look, "Since you can't sleep, let's go to a hotel."

He reached out and pulled Lin Mian up: "Then let's talk about my pitiful childhood."

Lin Mian: "..."

She immediately pulled her hand back.

"Are you crazy? It's 2 a.m., let me go."

He Duoye picked up the person who was kicking and struggling. He was all muscle, so even though Lin Mian was struggling like a fish, he held her steadily.

"So what if it's two o'clock? Perfect timing to stay up all night." He walked out.

Lin Mian clung to the door: "I'm not going, you beast, let me go."

In the end, He Duoye carried her downstairs, but they didn't actually go to a hotel in the middle of the night. Instead, they sat on a swing in the yard and watched the stars and moon at two in the morning.

The surroundings were quiet, with the faint chirping of insects rising and falling gently. The evening breeze was a bit cool, but the temperature was just right when it blew on the two people snuggling together.

Lin Mian finally started to feel sleepy and slowly fell asleep. She vaguely felt He Duoye carrying her upstairs, but she did not wake up.

The few days I spent in the old house were very peaceful.

He Duoye took Lin Mian to explore every corner of the old house, and sometimes he would take her out for a stroll, and also let her meet with Li Mingshao outside.

Mr. He rarely shows his face and doesn't communicate much with them. The only time they chatted in the study was about the details of the wedding.

Lin Mian never took He's father's talk of marriage seriously, because He Duoye almost never mentioned the wedding. Lin Mian assumed in her heart that the wedding was just an excuse and would not actually happen, or would just be a simple formality.

But when her father mentioned the details, she realized that the wedding would probably be a very big affair, with hundreds of people attending.

He's father also asked about the wedding dress. Lin Mian had no idea about it, but He Duoye said it was already prepared.

After leaving the study, Lin Mian wanted to ask He Duoye about the details of his wedding, but the butler was right beside her, so she didn't get a chance.

On the way, He Duoye answered a phone call: "Okay, I'll have someone pick you up."

After hanging up the phone, He Duoye said to Lin Mian, "Your friend is coming to visit you."
