Border Soldier: My fiancée snatched credit and broke off the engagement, so I promptly became a marq
Chapter 105 Han Wanshan emerges from seclusion, first stomp his banner into the mud.
When the White Wolf Gate was fully opened, 1,200 riders poured out of the pass.
Han Wanshan brought out all the soldiers who were still able to move.
The remnants of the Black Tooth Cavalry, deserters from the outer camp, the personal guards from within the pass, and soldiers temporarily armored were all mixed together, with twelve Black Mountain banners lined up in a row. At the very front were three hundred genuine Han family heavy cavalrymen, their horse armor, body armor, and long spears representing the last remaining strength of White Wolf Pass.
Han Wanshan rode an ordinary black horse and still wore the same unadorned black armor.
He did not stop five miles away.
One thousand two hundred cavalrymen pressed straight into the outer camp.
Chen Mu stood at the gap in the west wall, watching the black line get closer and closer.
The cavalry that could arrive from Tiemabao, Yanmaji, and Duanqiyi all arrived before last night. The outer fortress currently has 130 heavy cavalry, 360 light cavalry, and more than 400 infantry, as well as 200 wounded soldiers who can stand on the walls.
The number of people is still less than that of the Han family.
Chen Mu did not close the door.
The fifty-six night raiders who were brought in last night were placed at the front.
They didn't carry knives; their only task was to point out the slopes Han's heavy cavalry frequently traveled and the hiding places of the light cavalry on both flanks. Some worried that Chen Mu would kill them after using them, so Er Gou served each of them a bowl of meat porridge and untied their ropes on the spot.
"If you want to go back to the pass, leave now."
No one moved.
If they go back to eat tree bark, Han Wanshan will first punish them for surrendering. Staying in the outer village at least provides meat, and if family members die, they can still receive silver.
The youngest night raider took over a small cooking pot flag.
"I'll go to the front too."
Knowing that the Han family's crossbow battalion was hidden on the east slope, he took the initiative to lead thirty Baiquan cavalrymen to bypass it. Before the battle even began, four of the six crossbow battalions on the east slope were burned down by the herdsmen.
Han Wanshan saw the black smoke but did not change his order.
He no longer has the luxury of delaying a second time.
The outer gate of the village was fully opened, and the Black Pot Heavy Cavalry lined up outside. More than 500 military horses brought back from the horse farm were also led to both sides, with only an empty straw figure tied to the back of each horse.
Han Wanshan stopped once about 300 paces away.
"Chen Mu".
"If you retreat now, I'll let you take a woman and a hundred riders with you."
Chen Mu asked, "How should we divide the four women?"
Someone on the city wall couldn't help but laugh.
Han Wanshan's face finally darkened.
"act recklessly."
He raised his right hand.
Three hundred Han family heavy cavalrymen simultaneously pressed their guns down.
"Raze the outer village to the ground!"
The sound of horses' hooves was like the entire gate wall collapsing.
Chen Mu did not allow the Black Pot Heavy Cavalry to charge forward.
One hundred and thirty riders stood motionless in front of the gate until the Han family's heavy cavalry charged within a hundred paces before he drew his sword.
More than 500 empty horses on both sides of the racecourse had their reins cut at the same time.
Anado and Bai Quan rode behind, blowing wolf whistles. The empty horses, hearing the whistles, circled the outer gate and converged towards the center. The Han family's heavy cavalry charged forward, while the empty horses on both sides continuously squeezed into the formation.
They can kill people, but they can't kill all five hundred chaotic horses.
The first row of Korean riders was pushed aside by the herd of horses.
The second row bumped into the first row.
The three hundred heavy cavalry still charged with momentum, but their formation had broken down.
"Hit it now!"
Lu Shuangyi led 130 Black Pot Heavy Cavalry out of the city.
Her left side was wrapped with stiff cloth, and her body was pressed very low. The Black Pot Cavalry did not engage in a long line of counterattacks, but instead formed ten small teams and squeezed into the gaps left by the chaotic horses.
The experienced riders lead the way, while the new riders follow behind, only recognizing the soot from the pot.
Each team was like a short knife, specifically designed to cut into the waist and abdomen of the Han family's heavy cavalry.
Two groups of black-armored soldiers clashed outside the door.
The sound of spears snapping was as dense as popping beans.
The Han family's heavy cavalry, with their superior armor and stronger horses, rammed and killed over thirty Black Pot cavalrymen in the first round. However, they were surrounded by frightened, empty horses, unable to turn around. The new Black Pot cavalrymen stabbed their horses from under their bellies, while the Baiquan herdsmen ensnared the riders on the outside.
Twelve crossbows on the city wall fired arrows simultaneously.
The thick arrows didn't discriminate between men and horses; one pierced through two Han cavalrymen, and the other embedded itself in the back of a Black Pot rider. Chen Mu didn't stop the ballistae.
The area outside the door was already a chaotic mess.
Whoever is afraid of death first will be the first to scatter.
Seeing that the front lines were bogged down, Han Wanshan dispatched four hundred light cavalry to circle the city from the east and west. Just as the cavalry on the west side reached the breach that had been repaired the night before, earthenware jars filled with broken salt flew out from behind the wall.
The earthenware jar shattered upon hitting the ground.
Salt and lime were thrown into the eyes of horses and people. Cavalrymen covered their faces and charged around wildly, while the soldiers guarding the wall rushed out carrying planks, knocking the disoriented men off their horses in rows.
Su Wan was on the west wall.
She wore no armor, only her hair was tied up tightly, and she guarded three silver chests. Every time a Han cavalryman fell, she would have ten taels of silver thrown to the first person who had his horse's ear cut off.
A fifteen-year-old girl killed two fallen soldiers and received twenty taels of silver and a live horse. Her mother and younger brother had just been driven out of the pass the night before, and this was enough for the family to start a new life.
The people on the west wall fought even more fiercely.
They guarded the broken wall, while also scrambling to grab the horses and silver they could use tomorrow.
On the east side is Lin Qinghe's medical vehicle.
Twenty carts were positioned outside the city gate, seemingly only carrying wounded soldiers. As Han Qi charged closer, the white cloths on the carts were simultaneously lifted, revealing short crossbows captured from Crow Neck.
Lin Qinghe personally fired the first arrow.
Twenty medical wagons fired over a hundred crossbow bolts, and the entire front rank of cavalry on the east side fell from their horses. The wounded crawled out from behind the wagons and used crutches, short knives, and hoes to finish off those who had fallen.
Han Wanshan failed to enter the village from either side.
A giant man wearing a tiger skin next to him finally couldn't sit still any longer.
This man was named Huyan Po, a trusted general whom Han Wanshan had recruited from the north, and the last fierce general at Bailang Pass capable of suppressing the various tribes. Han Lie and Shi Bao both had to call him Uncle.
Huyan Po led two hundred of his personal guards from within the pass straight to the main gate.
He ignored the chaos of the horses and the need to rescue those at the front; he only focused on Chen Mu below the city wall.
Chen Mu still did not ride a horse.
His foot injury made it difficult for him to stand, and his right arm was in a sling across his chest. He got into the light carriage, which Er Gou drove himself, and they sped out of the village gate against the flow of the defeated horses.
Seeing this, Huyan Po laughed and threw out his spear.
The spear pierced the wet cowhide at the front of the cart and embedded itself in the driver's seat. The two dogs rolled to the side, the reins slipping from their grasp. The light cart, uncontrolled, continued forward by inertia.
Chen Mu gripped the reins with his left hand.
Huyan Po's second short spear has arrived.
Chen Mu dodged to the side, the short spear grazing his right shoulder and tearing the entire fabric strap off the crane arm. His old wound was exposed to the cold wind, and blood instantly stained half of his clothes red.
Two vehicles and a horse collided head-on.
Huyan Po's warhorse's front hoof stepped into the light carriage, and the axle snapped with a crack. Chen Mu was thrown into the air, his back slamming heavily into the mud and snow.
Huyan Po also fell from his horse.
He was nearly nine feet tall, clad in two layers of heavy armor, and wielded a horse-slaying saber longer than Chen Mu himself. With his first strike, he shattered the carriage frame; with his second, he swept across Chen Mu's waist and abdomen.
Chen Mu used his left-hand knife to block it.
The short sword broke in two on the spot.
The saber still pierced his leather armor under his ribs, drawing out a patch of blood.
Huyan Po raised his foot and stepped on his chest.
"A mere cook's dog dares to challenge General Han for the pass?"
Chen Mu reached for half of a car axle beside him with his left hand.
"The dog bites."
"I don't care, sir."
The axle pierced Hu Yan's knee bend.
The heavy armor failed to protect his joints. Huyan Po knelt down on one knee, his saber still pressing down on Chen Mu's head. Chen Mu braced himself against the back of the blade with his shoulder, the iron blade tearing open the wound on his right shoulder again.
Lu Shuangyi tried to come to the rescue, but was entangled by three heavy cavalrymen from the Han family.
Anado, separated by the chaotic horses, could only fire two arrows in quick succession. The arrows pierced Huyan's broken back armor, only to be deflected.
Chen Mu only had Er Gou by his side.
Er Gou lunged out from behind the broken cart, still holding the old pot pierced by the spear. He slammed the pot onto Hu Yanpo's head, clutching the rim tightly with both hands.
Hu Yanpo's vision went black.
He swung the broadsword wildly upwards, splitting the iron pot open and also leaving a long wound on Er Gou's chest.
Taking advantage of this moment, Chen Mu rolled off the ground.
He had no knife, so he picked up the broken spear from the Han family's camp. The spearhead was gone, leaving only the serrated wooden shaft.
Chen Mu braced the wooden pole against Hu Yanpo's broken leg armor seam and rammed into it.
The wooden pole pierced through the inside of the thigh.
Huyanpo screamed and overturned the iron pot.
Er Gou was thrown two zhang (approximately 6.6 meters) away.
Chen Mu still gripped the wooden pole, lifting it upwards along the wound. Splinters churned inside his armor, and blood gushed from below Hu Yanpo's waist. The giant punched Chen Mu in the forehead, and Chen Mu's vision went black, but his grip didn't loosen.
He used his last bit of strength to push forward.
The wooden pole pierced his lower abdomen and emerged from behind his waist.
Huyanpo knelt down.
Chen Mu drew his short axe from his waist and cleaved open the neck armor with one blow.
The second axe cleaved off half of the neck.
The third axe blow sent the man's head to the ground.
The entire guards at Bailang Pass saw it.
With Huyan Po dead, the last two hundred personal guards in front of the main gate began to retreat. The three hundred heavy cavalry in front had already been mostly wiped out by the chaotic cavalry and the Black Pot Cavalry, and the flanks on the east and west sides had not been able to enter the camp.
Han Wanshan personally led fifty riders to seize Huyan Po's corpse.
What he couldn't bear to part with wasn't the dead, but the head of the last valiant general of White Wolf Pass. Fifty personal guards, charging back against the retreating soldiers, were only thirty paces from the corpse.
Anato arrived first.
Her black horse, already struck by two arrows, still lay across the corpse. Han Wanshan shot an arrow at her chest; Anato dodged to the side, the arrowhead piercing her shoulder armor, causing her to lean backward.
Lu Shuangyi rushed in from the other side.
The white horse had already died in Yanmaji, so she replaced it with a black-toothed horse. She didn't charge at Han Wanshan, but instead used her spear to lift Huyan Poren's head and throw it far away over the outer wall of the village.
The forge worker on the city wall caught the head and immediately hung it on the crossbow.
The fifty guards missed their target. Anado seized the opportunity to cut down Han Wanshan's personal guards, while Lu Shuangyi wounded his black horse.
For the first time, Han Wanshan turned his horse around and retreated in front of Chen Mu.
Han Wanshan personally wielded his sword and killed three deserters, but he still couldn't stop the retreating crowd.
He finally ordered the return to the pass.
Of the 1,200 riders who set out, fewer than 650 returned with him.
Two hundred and seven men also died on the black pot side, with only ninety heavy cavalry remaining and more than one hundred light cavalry lost. The snow outside the gate was almost completely covered with the corpses of men and horses.
Near the main gate alone, they brought back over four hundred warhorses, two hundred complete suits of heavy armor, and six Black Mountain banners. Han Wanshan hastily retreated, leaving behind more than thirty cartloads of arrows and wound medicine behind the slope.
Er Gou's chest was so badly injured that the bone was visible, yet he still lay on the ground searching for the broken pot.
The pot was chopped in two, leaving only the handle. He hung the handle back on his waist and then took a copper pot from the Han family's corpse.
"This is too small."
"Use it first," Chen Mu said.
"We can't cook two thousand people."
"We'll go through customs tomorrow to find the big boss."
Er Gou hugged the copper pot and laughed, then coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Chen Mu did not chase after the door to close it.
He couldn't stand up.
Lu Shuangyi and Anato lifted him up from either side. Lin Qinghe ran over from behind the medical vehicle and saw the blood on his right shoulder and ribs; his face was paler than a corpse.
Su Wan then led her men to pick up the first Black Mountain flag that Han Wanshan had left at the front of the battle.
The flagpole was so thick that it took three people to lift it.
She dragged the flag in front of Chen Mu.
Chen Mu lifted his foot.
It can't be stepped on.
Anado kicked the flag into the mud for him, while Lu Shuangyi placed Huyan Po's head on the flag.
The white wolf slowly closed the door.
Han Wanshan, who was standing on the wall, kept watching.
Chen Mu raised his blood-stained short axe across the corpses.
"tomorrow."
"I'll put the pot inside the doorway."
