Chapter 94 White Spring Ranch, Anado Steals the Chapter Herself
Han Wanshan did not eat wind.
He killed six wounded horses, first having his personal guards and heavy cavalry divide the meat, and then ordered men to go to Baiquan Ranch overnight to fetch fodder.
Baiquan Ranch is 30 miles from Heishibao.
Originally belonged to Anado's mother clan.
Anato grew up by the spring. Back then, the pastures had no high walls, and the Baiquan tribe's tents stretched from the south slope to the north. Each family didn't have many cattle or sheep, but no one would sell their child for a bundle of hay.
Later, Kumu arrived with his men.
Anado's father died outside the South Gate. Her mother led her people to retreat to the spring, offering all their cattle and sheep in exchange for a way to survive. Kumu took the cattle and sheep, and then the Han family wanted the pasture. To save the elderly and weak from the tribe, her mother knelt outside Tian Heng's tent for three days, but was ultimately driven to the coldest, most desolate ravine.
That winter, more than a hundred members of the Baiquan tribe died. Anado always knew that her mother had begged someone, but she didn't know that she had knelt before Tian Heng.
After Kumu seized the pasture, the Han family and Ugut each took half. Ugut's horses were kept in the north, and the White Wolf Pass's military horses were kept in the south. There was a spring in the middle of the pasture, which never froze in winter, making it the best place in the area to spend the winter.
Han Wanshan sent four hundred cavalrymen to collect grass.
They also brought three hundred empty hay carts.
Upon hearing the news, Anato finished the last mouthful of porridge in her bowl.
"I'm going this time."
Chen Mu said, "I was going to send you anyway."
"Aren't you going to stop them?"
"The ranch is yours."
"And then what?"
"Give me half of the cattle, sheep, horses, and grass."
Anato glared at him.
"You're even greedier than Ugut."
"Ugut won't give you anyone."
Chen Mu pointed to the White Wolf Guards, herdsman riders, and Han family border soldiers who had just surrendered behind her.
"Two hundred riders, you are to lead them."
Anado glanced at the group of people.
They had just finished eating.
The armor, knife, and horse were all taken from the enemy. If we seize the pastures, our families and livestock will have a place to spend the winter.
Of the two hundred cavalry, seventy were former Baiquan soldiers, forty were surrendered Ugut cavalry, and a group of newly arrived Han soldiers. The three groups, who might have fought each other yesterday, were all focused on the same spot today.
The old residents of Baiquan want to reclaim their ancestral land.
The Ugut cavalrymen wanted to steal grass for their families.
The situation was even simpler for the Han soldiers. They were assigned horses, but had nowhere to keep them. If they captured a pasture, each person could receive five bundles of hay, and those who made meritorious contributions could even carry a sheep.
Anato made her point very clearly.
"Whoever enters first takes the horse, whoever goes up to the wooden building first takes the land and silver at their waist. Whoever dares to touch the shepherd's family, I'll chop them down first."
Two hundred people simultaneously struck the knife.
This is not Chen Mu avenging her.
It means handing over the person who can take revenge to her.
Anato reached out her hand.
Give me that piece of cooking cloth from your knife.
Chen Mu took it off.
She tied the rag to her scimitar.
"We reclaimed the pasture, and hung the pot flag together with the White Spring Flag of my mother's tribe."
"what ever."
Lu Shuangyi walked over from the side.
"Han Wanshan's main force is still outside the city."
"She took two hundred riders with her, and we are outnumbered on the front."
Anato raised an eyebrow.
"Is Lieutenant General Lu reluctant to part with his men, or with Chen Mu's banner?"
Lu Shuangyi glanced at her.
"I cannot bear to see Blackstone Fortress trampled to pieces by 1,500 cavalry."
"If you can't take over the ranch, I'll personally collect your corpse."
Anato smiled.
"rest assured."
"If we're really going to take them, we'll take them from the Han family."
She mounted her horse and led two hundred riders out of the fortress through the west gate.
Han Wanshan saw someone leaving the city through the west gate, but he did not pursue them.
He was also waiting for fodder.
As long as four hundred cavalrymen bring back grass, the main force can rest for one night and launch a strong attack on Blackrock Fortress tomorrow.
Anato didn't try to flag down an empty truck. By securing the area for hay, Han Wanshan could only haul snow no matter how many trucks he sent in the future.
She left Sam to recover from his injuries in Wild Dog Gully, and selected three familiar travelers from among the old men of Baiquan to go directly to the south gate of the ranch.
The pasture was guarded by Tian Heng, a military officer of the Han family.
This man was not a member of the Han family clan, yet he managed the horses for the Han family for five years. Every year, no fewer than twenty herdsmen froze to death, but he only cared about whether the horses lost weight.
Tian Heng has already received Han Wanshan's orders.
Three hundred hay carts are being loaded.
Half of the four hundred cavalrymen dismounted to move hay, and the other half guarded the gate. Adding to the two hundred guards already stationed at the ranch, the total number was six hundred.
Anato only has two hundred riders.
The old man of Baiquan points to the spring ditch on the west side.
"You can enter from the back."
Anato shook her head.
"I'm going back to my own ranch; I won't go into the ditch."
She had twenty herdsmen put on the heavy armor captured from the Han family and escort ten empty grain carts ahead. The guards in the distance thought they were prisoner carts sent from Black Stone Fortress, until the procession was about a hundred paces away and they realized there was no Han family flag.
Tian Heng climbed the wooden building.
"Who is it?"
Anato took off her leather hat.
"The people of Shirakusen."
Tian Heng recognized her, was taken aback at first, and then burst into laughter.
"Ugut's traitorous daughter?"
"When your mother was kneeling and begging me to keep the ranch, she wasn't this stubborn."
Anato's smile vanished.
"She knelt before you?"
"He knelt for three days."
"In the end, weren't they still dragged away?"
Tian Heng waved to the guards.
"Take them alive!"
"A gift for General Han to warm his tent!"
The wooden door opened.
An old man named Baiquan suddenly rushed out from the group.
Tian Heng recognized him as the man who had led Anado's mother's horse years ago and immediately ordered his men to fire arrows. The old man was struck by two arrows but did not fall. He rushed to the wooden door and chopped down the first door support with his axe.
"Young Master!"
"The door is open for you!"
The third arrow pierced through the back of his neck.
The old man knelt by the door, his hands still gripping the axe handle. Anato walked past him without stopping, simply pulling the blood-stained axe from the wood and hanging it on her saddle.
Two hundred Han cavalry charged out.
Anato did not withdraw.
She ordered ten empty grain carts to untie their shafts simultaneously. The horses harnessed to the carts were slashed, and they dragged the empty carts towards the cavalry. The carts were light and the wheels were fast; they wouldn't kill anyone, but they forced the cavalry in front to split to the sides.
"Come inside with me!"
Anato walked between the two cars.
Two hundred riders behind them formed three ranks, charging forward despite the side blades of the Han family cavalry. More than ten men fell in the first rank, but the second rank continued their charge through the gaps.
The wooden door hadn't been closed yet.
Anato's scimitar first cut the rope.
The heavy door panel was stuck in mid-air.
Herdsmen riders kept pouring in from under the gate.
The doorway was only wide enough for three riders to walk abreast, so the Han family guards began rolling logs down from the rooftops on either side. The first log broke the back of a warhorse, and the second knocked over five men. Some of the Ugut surrendered cavalry tried to retreat, but Anato turned her horse around and cleaved a log that had rolled in front of her with a single stroke.
"Behind them are Han Wanshan's two thousand men!"
"If we retreat, nobody will get any grass!"
The surrendered cavalry glanced at the mountain of haystacks inside the gate, and then saw that Anato's shoulder armor was still bleeding. Finally, they squeezed in. A Han soldier dismounted and crawled to the door hinge, using his shoulder to push up the jammed door panel. The others took the opportunity to drag a hay cart across the doorway.
They blocked their own escape route.
The guards couldn't close the gate no matter how hard they tried.
Anato divided the group into two sides. Baiquan's old men seized the horse stables, Ugut's surrendered cavalry grabbed the haystacks, and the Han soldiers followed her straight to the wooden building. Each of the three groups could see what they wanted to steal, so no one needed to urge them on.
When the ranch slaves saw Anato, someone called out her mother's name first.
Subsequently, dozens of hay bales were simultaneously thrown down by the herdsmen.
They grabbed pitchforks, sickles, and lassos and charged at Tian Heng's guards.
Tian Heng fired arrows from the wooden building.
The first arrow killed an old man from Baiquan.
The second arrow was aimed at Anatolia.
A shepherd pushed her aside, and an arrow pierced his own chest.
Anato caught the person.
His mouth was full of blood, and he only managed to utter one sentence.
"Don't let them take the spring away again."
That man was named Wulan, and he was Anaduo's childhood horse-herding partner.
Ten years ago, they had a horse-taming competition by the spring. Ulan always lost, and when she lost, she would steal milk cakes made by Anado's mother. Now, Ulan is so thin that she is just skin and bones, and her wrists are covered with old scars from the iron chains.
When Anado recognized her, Ulan was speechless.
She handed Ulan to the shepherd behind her and looked up at Tian Heng. At that moment, all the guards on the wooden tower saw what was in her eyes, and the two men who were still firing arrows simultaneously took a step back.
Anado put the person down and took the longbow.
She did not shoot Tian Heng's body.
First, shoot the rope on the wooden staircase.
Tian Heng tried to run, but the stairs had already collapsed.
Anato led ten riders to dismount and climb up the wooden pillar. Tian Heng fired three arrows, wounding two of them, but before he could nock the fourth, Anato had already scaled the wooden building.
The two knives collided on the narrow floorboards.
Tian Heng was strong and cleaved her shoulder armor open with a single stroke.
Anato pressed close to him, her knee sinking into his lower abdomen, while her curved blade slashed upwards from between his legs.
Tian Heng screamed and knelt down.
"Your mother is useless!"
"She can't protect the ranch!"
Anato grabbed his hair and pressed his face against the edge of the floorboards.
Below is Baiquan.
"I'll guard it."
The scimitar cut through.
Tian Heng's head fell into the spring.
The headless corpse was still kneeling upstairs.
Seeing their commander dead, half of the guards wanted to flee. However, the four hundred cavalrymen sent by Han Wanshan remained in formation outside the pasture, ready to receive the hay carts.
Two of Tian Heng's confidants tried to carry the corpse in exchange for a reward, but Anado cut them down with a single blow each. She handed the blood-stained White Spring Banner to the child below the wooden building and told him to hold it up.
As the white cloth rose over the rooftops, a chorus of wolf whistles echoed across the pasture.
For the first time, over seven hundred herdsmen refused to drive the horses for the Han family. They unchained themselves and took out their hay forks, sickles, and red-hot horseshoes. The more than one hundred Han soldiers who had been guarding the hay carts saw that there were people all around and dropped their swords.
Anato did not kill the surrendered soldiers.
She pointed to the four hundred grass-gathering cavalrymen outside the ranch.
"If you want to live, guard the gate for Bai Quan."
The man who had just lost his knife picked it up again, turned around, and stood under the newly raised white flag.
Anato cut off Tian Heng's Black Mountain Flag and replaced it with the old white cloth brought by the old man Baiquan.
Then they tied Chen Mu's black pot and rag to the side.
"Not a single hay cart is allowed to move!"
The shepherd opened the horse pen.
More than 400 military horses broke out of the wooden fence.
Anato, leading herdsmen riders, used the momentum of the herd to ram the grass-gathering cavalry. The Han family cavalry tried to protect the cart, but were first scattered by the chaotic horses, and then lassoed by the herdsmen from both sides.
The battle raged until nightfall.
There were no walls outside the ranch; all that remained was a head-on confrontation.
Four hundred cavalrymen charged the hay carts three times, but were repelled by the horses and archers the first two times. The third time, the commanding officer led the remaining two hundred cavalrymen forward, hoping to seize the road before nightfall.
Anato led 130 people who were still able to ride horses to meet them.
Her shoulder armor was torn, and her left leg was slashed by a spear, yet she still charged ahead of the White Spring Banner. When her mount collapsed to its knees, she seized Tian Heng's black horse and continued the chase, finally using the old man's axe to cut the commander off his horse.
When the last few dozen Han cavalrymen saw that their commander was also dead, they finally scattered and fled.
Of the four hundred Han family cavalry who went to collect grass, only a little over a hundred escaped.
Baiquan Ranch left behind 226 intact warhorses, 300 hay carts, more than 600 cattle and sheep, and enough hay for 2,000 horses to eat for ten days.
More importantly, the more than 700 herdsmen and their families no longer raised horses for the Han family.
Anato stood by the White Spring and threw Tian Heng's head in front of her mother's old tent.
She did not kneel.
He simply plunged the blood-stained scimitar into the ground.
"daughter."
"I took the ranch back myself."
