Chapter 29 How can there be snakes in winter?
Inside the Jing'an Prince's Mansion, the lights were on, making it as bright as day.
When Lin Ci and Princess Yongle returned, Granny Qian had been waiting at the door for a long time. She stood outside the threshold, craning her neck, and rushed over as soon as she saw the two figures on horseback, her voice trembling.
"Finally back! Finally back!"
Princess Yongle felt a chill run down her spine when she saw her expression.
Without asking any questions, she dismounted, grabbed Lin Ci's wrist, and ran towards the inner courtyard.
Lin Ci was being pulled along, the medicine box swaying back and forth on her shoulder, and she almost tripped when she stepped over the threshold.
Amo is in the princess's room.
The old physician stood before the bed, sweating profusely with anxiety. He looked at Amo's face, a mixture of blue and purple bruises, and his hands trembled as he exclaimed, "What should we do?!"
With a loud bang, the door was kicked open.
The old physician was so startled that he turned around, and upon seeing that it was the princess, his knees buckled and he knelt down.
"Forgive my incompetence, I truly have no idea where to begin!"
Princess Yongle ignored him and strode to the bedside in a few steps.
On the bed, Amo's eyes were closed, his face was ashen, his lips were purple, and his chest was barely rising and falling; he was barely alive.
Princess Yongle's tears fell incessantly. She turned around, suddenly knelt down in front of Lin Ci, and kowtowed heavily.
"Please save him!"
"Get up first." Lin Ci pulled the princess up with her left hand and supported the old doctor who was still trembling with his right hand. "He seems to have been poisoned by snake venom."
As she spoke, she walked to the edge of the bed and bent down to examine Amo's eyelids.
"That's right, it's snake venom."
"Snake venom?!" the princess and the old physician exclaimed in unison.
The old doctor was even more incoherent, saying, "This... in the dead of winter, where did this snake come from?"
A figure flashed through Lin Ci's mind, but now was not the time to think about it. As she took a sharp knife from her medical kit, she asked, "Do you have any antidote for snake venom in the manor?"
The old doctor nodded quickly: "Yes, yes!"
"Bring me everything: external application, internal use, and decoctions for washing."
"Alright, alright, I'll go right away." The old doctor took off running outside.
"Come here," Lin Ci said to Princess Yongle.
Princess Yongle dared not delay and stepped in front of her.
Lin Ci rolled up his sleeves, took out the medicinal wine and handed it to Princess Yongle. Then he spread out his palms and said, "Pour the wine on my hands, and the knife next to me."
Princess Yongle hurriedly did as she was told. The usually skilled bird hunter was now trembling like a leaf, and half of the wine was poured out and the other half was spilled.
"Is this...right?" Princess Yongle's voice trembled.
"Yes, you did very well." Lin Ci's tone was gentler than usual. "When I'm performing the knife work for A Mo later, you hold up the candlestick to provide light for me. Remember, your hand must be steady."
"I...I remember...the hand...the hand must be accurate." Princess Yongle held her breath and nodded emphatically.
Lin Ci, holding the small knife, walked to the bedside and carefully squatted down. Princess Yongle hurriedly brought over a candlestick and nervously held it up for her, but accidentally the candle flame licked Lin Ci's hair, almost setting her on fire.
Lin Ci smelled the burnt smell of hair, but didn't have time to pay attention. She carefully examined A Mo's face, then looked at his hands and feet, and saw that his calf was tied with a piece of cloth, and blood was still seeping out from underneath.
Lin Ci slashed open all of A Mo's clothes. On his calf, a bloody hole gouged out by a knife caught her eye. The hole was rotten, not only blackened but also emitting a foul stench. The bluish-purple color around the hole spread from the wound, climbing up his thigh like a spider web and extending towards his torso.
Lin Ci used the tip of her knife to pry open the wound, and a stream of thick, yellowish-white pus gushed out, flowing down her leg and onto the couch.
Princess Yongle cried out in surprise, abruptly turning her face away, shrinking her neck, and peeking back with one eye open and the other closed.
"Wine." Lin Ci held out her hand.
Princess Yongle quickly placed the bottle of medicinal wine into her palm.
Lin Ci poured the medicinal wine onto A Mo's wound and carefully washed it over and over again.
Seeing that Amo didn't respond, Princess Yongle began to sob sadly again, "Amo... will he die?"
"It's hard to say." Lin Ci didn't look up, but kept looking at his injury. "The poison has entered his meridians and needs to be expelled as soon as possible."
"How should we arrange them?"
Lin Ci gently pressed the skin and flesh around the wound and said one word: "Suck".
"I'll do it!"
Princess Yongle placed the candlestick on the table, leaned over Amo's lap, and began sucking hard on the wound. Before Lin Ci could react, she had already spat a mouthful of dark black poisonous blood onto the ground.
"Don't mess around, you might get poisoned too if you're not careful."
"Will I die?" Princess Yongle stared at Lin Ci's face, her mouth full of blood and foam, her eyes filled with a frightening seriousness.
Lin Ci thought for a moment, then sighed helplessly, "I'm here, I won't let you die."
"That's good." With that, Princess Yongle bent down and buried her face in Amo's wound again. She used all her strength, afraid that she would not suck it clean, and several times she used too much force and almost swallowed the poisonous blood.
Just then, the physician arrived carrying a pile of herbs. His old eyesight was failing, and he only saw the princess lying on top of A-Mo, not knowing what she was doing. Startled, he dropped all the herbs he was carrying.
Lin Ci and Princess Yongle heard the commotion.
Princess Yongle merely glanced at it, but did not stop what she was doing.
Lin Ci quickly picked up the herbs from the ground and instructed the old doctor, "Go and fetch a basin of hot water."
The doctor was stunned for a moment, then repeatedly said "good" and ran away as if fleeing.
Lin Ci heated the knife over the candle flame until it was red-hot. She walked to the bed and made several shallow cuts on A Mo's body.
Princess Yongle was slightly taken aback and looked up at her.
Lin Ci quickly explained, "Don't worry, making a few incisions will help the poison drain out faster. Sigh, if only there were leeches."
In the dead of winter, where can you find leeches?
Princess Yongle lowered her head and continued to act as a leech, sucking onto Amo's wound.
About half an hour later, Princess Yongle was exhausted. Her eyelids were almost drooping, but she still refused to stop.
Lin Ci first cleaned the wounds with the decocted medicine, then applied herbal medicine, changing the medicine every half hour, over and over again until the black blood turned bright red.
Finally, the ashen look on Amo's face dissipated, and his breathing became heavier.
Seeing that he had a chance to live, Princess Yongle grabbed Lin Ci's hand and exclaimed excitedly, "Look, Amo's face... he can be saved! He can be saved!"
Lin Ci dared not let her guard down. She washed the blood-stained handkerchief repeatedly in a tub of hot water, and then added a few herbs to the tub.
"Although most of the poison has been expelled, there are still some residues in my body, and I haven't been able to identify what kind of snake venom it is yet," Lin Ci said, stirring the water in the bucket with bamboo chopsticks.
The water was crystal clear, without a trace of turbidity.
She frowned and put another ingredient into another bucket of water. She had lost count of how many buckets of water and how many ingredients she had added.
After waiting for a while, the water remained colorless.
"Alas...it's not this poison." Lin Ci sighed.
"How can there be snakes in winter?" Princess Yongle still couldn't understand. She felt a little itchy in her nose, raised her hand and rubbed it haphazardly, and two streams of blood flowed straight down her nose.
She was also poisoned.
