Chapter 10 Catching Rabbits
Before Jiang Yun Ning could answer, he waved his hand again: "Forget it, do whatever you want, as long as it's not for the Song family."
Jiang Yuntian never really expected Jiang Yuning to repay the money; he only hoped that his silly sister would stop being deceived by Song Minglang.
Jiang Yun Ning woke up early the next morning.
With a thought, I entered the space to check the tomato seeds I had planted yesterday noon.
To her surprise, the seeds that hadn't even sprouted when she left the space yesterday had already grown to the height of her calves today.
At this rate, the results should be available in less than three days.
"Goodness." Jiang Yun Ning was a little surprised, and the next second she ran back to the cabin.
The bowl of hot water inside is still scalding hot.
"So, time flows faster over those few acres than outside, but time seems to stand still inside the cabin?"
Satisfied, she left the space and walked out of the yard, where she saw Jiang Che watering the forty-odd tomato seedlings by the wall.
"Good morning." She couldn't contain her excitement.
Jiang Che turned around, a hint of surprise in his eyes: "Good morning."
His voice remained devoid of emotion, like that of a low-level robot.
But Jiang Yun Ning didn't care at all.
After breakfast, she took Jiang Che directly up the mountain.
"I only want branches from this broad-leaved tree. No pine needles." Jiang Yun Ning pointed to the tree in front of her, then asked again, still unsure, "Do you know what a pine needle tree is?"
Jiang Che was speechless. He glanced at her coldly and turned to pick up some branches.
Jiang Yuning touched her nose dejectedly, picked up her hoe, and began searching around. She wanted to see if the good fortune of finding ginseng as soon as she entered the mountains—a must-have for any time traveler—would happen to her.
Half an hour later, Jiang Yun Ning's eyes were almost blinded, but he still couldn't see a single ginseng root, not even a root.
Exhausted, she collapsed to the ground, watching as Jiang Che had already bundled up three large bundles of tree branches in the distance.
"Jiang Che!" she called out.
Jiang Che walked over.
"Help me dig a hole. It should be wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, and three and a half feet deep." Jiang Yun Ning thought, "Since I can't find ginseng, I can at least dig a hole to catch a couple of rabbits."
Back in her hometown, she used to go up the mountain to catch rabbits with the other kids in the village, but after moving to the city, she never did it again.
Jiang Che didn't understand what she was going to do, but he still followed her instructions and was about to make a move.
"Hey, hey, hey?" Jiang Yun Ning hurriedly stopped her, standing up and walking forward: "Not here."
After walking a few meters, he pointed to some obvious tracks on the ground: "Look, these are tracks left by rabbits. They'll come back along the same route. Dig here, and after you're done, stick a sharp stick underneath."
The rabbit trap is wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, so there's no need to worry about anyone stepping into it and hurting their foot.
Jiang Che was somewhat surprised, wondering how Jiang Yun Ning, a farmer, would know hunting techniques. Despite his doubts, he didn't show them and simply began digging the pit as instructed.
Jiang Yun Ning looked around, then picked up the basket and walked forward.
When he returned, Jiang Che had already dug the hole and was now gathering branches.
"Jiang Che, I found Astragalus membranaceus!" Jiang Yun Ning exclaimed excitedly.
Fortunately, she knew some Chinese medicinal herbs. Although she couldn't sell them for much money, every little bit helps.
Jiang Che stopped what he was doing, his suspicions about Jiang Yun Ning growing deeper.
No matter what, he's now in the same boat as Jiang Yuning, and as long as Jiang Yuning doesn't break the law, he won't do anything.
The two wandered around the woods for a long time, making sure there was nothing of value in the area, before returning to the trap to see if they had any luck.
Before he even got close, Jiang Che could already smell the stench of blood.
He was somewhat surprised, not expecting that this method could actually catch rabbits.
The leaves above the trap have fallen, and the rabbit below is lifeless.
Jiang Yun Ning was in a great mood and immediately picked up the rabbit and told Jiang Che to carry the tree branch home.
Upon entering the village, the two, busy on their way, did not notice the fleeting figure of Granny Yang in the corner.
"Dad, come quickly!" Jiang Yun Ning called out as soon as she entered the door.
Jiang Laosan was sharpening his knife when someone invited him to slaughter a pig in a couple of days.
"Oh, girl. Where did you get this?"
Jiang Yun didn't want to explain how he ended up digging the trap, so he simply blamed it on Jiang Che: "Jiang Che caught it, he's really good at it."
A look of surprise flashed across Jiang Che's eyes.
Did Jiang Yun Ning discover the shame in his heart?
Since arriving at the Jiang family, he needs to be taught everything. Even sweeping the pigsty makes him act all dramatic, constantly dry heaving.
He was obtained by Jiang Yuning in exchange for a pig, and he knew how important a pig was to a family. That made him feel even more guilty.
Jiang Che pursed his lips, feeling a warmth in his heart, but he would not take credit for it.
"This is..." He was about to explain when Jiang Yun Ning grabbed his arm: "Dad, go and take care of this. We're having rabbit for dinner tonight."
Jiang Laosan nodded happily and went to the riverbank.
After everyone left, Jiang Yun Ning turned to Jiang Che and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong? You're not embarrassed, are you?"
She was simply too lazy to explain, so what was Jiang Che imagining?
Jiang Che frowned slightly and shook off her hand: "You grabbed this. I don't need it."
Jiang Yun Ning waved his hand dismissively: "So you dug this pit yourself? What's with the fuss about being a grown man?"
Jiang Che's initial gratitude vanished instantly upon hearing the word "affected."
These two words are like a sore spot.
"I'm not being pretentious." He said coldly, and strode towards the pigsty.
He was determined to stand up for himself and go clean the pigsty to show Jiang Yun Ning.
He's not pretentious at all.
Jiang Yun Ning had long noticed that Jiang Che couldn't stand the word "affected," but she just liked to deliberately provoke him, watching his icy face tighten with anger, yet he looked helpless.
It's a way of finding some fun in life without the internet.
Jiang Yuning shook the water off his hands and watched Jiang Che walk toward the pigpen with his lips pursed. He thought Jiang Che was angry and was going to beat the pigs to vent his anger. He was about to say, "The pigs are innocent."
Then they saw Jiang Che pick up a broom and walk into the pigsty with a look of grim determination.
"Ugh..." Jiang Che gagged.
But I resisted the urge to leave.
He kept reassuring himself that it was okay, he would get used to it.
Jiang Yun Ning was stunned, watching Jiang Che stubbornly sweep up pig manure while constantly gagging.
That face, which usually had little expression, was now flushed red.
"Why don't you stop making things difficult for yourself?" Jiang Yun Ning couldn't stand it anymore. "We have a lot of family members, and it's not like you're the only one who can clean the pigsty."
Jiang Che felt that she was looking down on him and glared at her fiercely.
Jiang Yunning was speechless: "Like a dog biting Lü Dongbin."
But as soon as he finished speaking, Jiang Che's broom-wielding movements became even faster.
"I'm speechless. Stubborn mule." Jiang Yun Ning rolled her eyes and ignored him.
A few minutes later, Jiang Che, having finished sweeping the pigsty, ran to wash his hands while gagging.
He used the soap pods and wood ash several times before finally letting out a sigh of relief.
Jiang Yun Ning shook her head, "We still need to finish making the soap as soon as possible."
"Jiang Laosan! Wang Cuihua! Get out here!" A sharp shout rang out from outside the door.
