Chapter 16 Incense Burning

Buddhism is the traditional religion of Kyushu, but Bai Mo couldn't find the answer to how it came about in history books.

More than five thousand years of trials and tribulations have caused the ancient civilizations on this land to forget too much.

This is based solely on online speculation and the behavior of some Buddhist magicians.

Besides its significant relationship with the spiritual realm, Buddhism has also produced many leading figures in the spatial realm.

Every Buddhist temple is a private plot of land for Buddhists, although every year a quota of places for practice is allocated to various groups and communities.

However, they believe in karma; how much one gains at the temple depends entirely on oneself.

The Jing'an Stone Temple is no exception.

As soon as Bai Mo stepped over the ancient threshold and entered, he felt a sense of relaxation and comfort.

The first thing you see is a vigorous ginkgo tree, its golden leaves adorning the simple blue bricks at your feet. A bamboo stalk of the same color peeks out from behind the courtyard wall, its upright trunk reaching out.

A place of tranquility and peace.

The Jing'an Stone Temple is located in the back courtyard of Jing'an Temple. It is simple and quiet, while in front of it is a renovated normal Buddhist temple, providing a place for people to worship Buddha and offer incense.

Bai Mo neither worships Buddha nor reads Buddhist scriptures. He therefore couldn't appreciate the unique charm of the flowers, plants, stones, and trees in the backyard. He simply felt that the place possessed a distinctive elegance.

Mei Qian and Zhou Tianyuan next to him were the same.

"Squeak~"

The ancient stone temple door in front of them was pushed open, and the elderly monk at the door stood like an old pine tree, smiling at them. His eyes were crystal clear, as if he could see through everything in the world.

He put his hands together and said, "Three benefactors, this is the place. Time is precious, so I will not disturb you any longer. When the time is up, someone will inform you."

Upon hearing this, Bai Mo and the other two also clasped their hands together in front of them and returned the greeting.

"Thank you for guiding me, Master!"

The wise monk smiled slightly and stepped out.

"Let's go in," Mei Qian said, glancing at Bai Mo and Zhou Tianyuan.

"Hmm." The two nodded, glancing at the dark temple gate from which they could not see anything inside.

They stepped inside one after the other.

As soon as Bai Mo stepped into the temple, his eyes lit up. In front of him, a simple and solemn Buddha statue sat on a high platform.

In front of the Buddha statue is an incense burner, and next to the burner is a stack of incense in a wooden box.

Not far in front of the tripod was a futon.

Bai Mo looked around and found that only the Buddha statue, incense burner, incense, and futon in front of him were clear.

The rest of the area remained in unseen darkness.

Zhou Tianyuan and Mei Qian, who came with them, have disappeared without a trace.

Thinking back to the spatial fluctuations he felt when he entered, a look of understanding flashed in his eyes.

Then he turned his gaze back to the small space in front of him that he could see clearly.

I scanned the area carefully but didn't find the wooden fish.

Bai Mo stepped forward, came to the cauldron, and took three sticks of incense from the incense box.

Light it with the candle burning nearby and insert it into the incense burner in front of you.

After all, it's an unscientific magical world; he'd rather believe it exists than not.

After doing all this, Bai Mo sat cross-legged on the futon. He reached around and took out a wooden fish from the opened space, and began to strike it.

He wanted to see what surprise awaited him.

"Da da da~"

A calm and clear sound echoed in the silent space. At first, Bai Mo did not feel anything unusual, but as the tapping continued...

He felt as if something was binding his spirit, making it somewhat heavy.

In his unseen spiritual world, the silver stardust spun slowly, almost at the same speed as his usual meditation practice.

"It's rumored that the Buddhist chants at the Jing'an Stone Temple have the wonderful effect of enhancing spiritual power, and can even help people break through spiritual barriers."

Two months ago, the words that their homeroom teacher, Su Ning, said when informing them of the assessment came to mind.

In Bai Mo's opinion, this must be the purpose of striking the wooden fish.

Therefore, he did not stop, and despite the increasingly heavy mental pressure, he continued to strike the wooden fish in his hand.

"Da da da~"

The calm voice continued to ring out, but Bai Mo felt he could no longer hear it clearly. The invisible pressure grew stronger, and sweat poured down his forehead.

It felt as if my head had become someone else's wooden fish, being struck again and again.

Bai Mo didn't know how long he had been knocking, maybe a day, maybe half a day.

But he was too exhausted to continue; his body could no longer withstand the mental pressure, and he subconsciously stopped tapping.

As the sound of the wooden fish disappeared from the space, the mental pressure receded as if by the tide.

He took out his phone and checked the time: 6 p.m. They had arrived at 8 a.m.

Once my attention returned to myself, the feeling of hunger spread from my stomach throughout my body.

Bai Mo took out some bread and other food and water from his spatial storage to fill his stomach and rest for a while, so that he could relax his tense mind.

After finishing his food, his aimless gaze fell on the incense burner.

I lit incense this morning, but it's all gone now.

Bai Mo stood up, picked up three more incense sticks, lit them, and continued burning them.

The incense had only been burning for a short while when he smelled its unique aroma, and his tired spirit felt a surge of comfort.

It's like taking a hot bath after exercising.

He was so exhausted that he couldn't even meditate, but now he felt his condition recovering at a considerable pace. This incense could actually restore his mental fatigue.

"No wonder he's been able to cultivate for so long."

Bai Mo sighed inwardly. Under normal circumstances, he could only endure such immense pressure for four or five hours at most, but he had persevered for so long today.

Having learned of the incense's wondrous uses, Bai Mo wasted no time. He sat cross-legged on the futon, closed his eyes, and immersed himself in meditation, entering a state of deep contemplation.

Soon, he realized that Su Ning was right; the cultivation speed here was much faster than outside.

The silver stardust, which was originally rotating at a constant speed, was now spinning at a high speed in his mental world.

It was as if a water pipe had been connected, and the magical energy continued to grow.

Five hours later, Bai Mo opened his eyes. Thanks to the incense, meditation had not made him tired; on the contrary, his mental state had recovered. So he picked up the wooden fish again.

The tapping sounds, neither too fast nor too slow, neither too long nor too short, neither too light nor too heavy, echoed once again.

The familiar sense of oppression resurfaced along with the voice, but Bai Mo remained silent, resisting it in quiet defiance.

Breathing gradually became heavy, the body slowly went from relaxed to tense, and beads of sweat rolled down the cheeks and fell to the ground.

Just when Bai Mo thought he was about to give up again, a crisp sound seemed to ring out in the air, as if something had broken.

Bai Mo, who had been feeling strained and on the verge of losing control of his body, suddenly felt the increasing mental pressure lessen.

It feels like you're holding in your pee and someone's whistling beside you. Just when you're about to burst, you realize you've suddenly become immune to the whistling and can hold on a little longer.

"This is the third realm!"

Bai Mo made a mental assessment: he wasn't too far from the third realm to begin with, so his breakthrough wasn't too surprising.

Cultivating mental strength is difficult, and even though he has a good talent in this area, he still agrees with this assessment. Therefore, Bai Mo doesn't want to miss any opportunity to cultivate mental strength.

Therefore, even after breaking through to the third realm, he still did not stop to rest or reward himself.

Since this incense, whose origin is unknown, is so useful.

Bai Mo planned to exhaust himself completely before lighting an incense stick and then using meditation to recover.
