Mystery: My Encounters with the Celestial God
Chapter 44 For Whom Do We Live?
Chapter 44 For Whom Do We Live?
A fist stained with filth and blood was extended in front of Elsa. It opened suddenly, and as if by magic, a dirty, melted, and deformed candy appeared in its palm.
"Elsa, don't be sad, we still have this!"
This is one of the two candies left over from making jam, and Roy has been carefully keeping it in his pocket ever since.
The blue-eyed boy's eyes were also slightly red. He forced down his disappointment, peeled back the stained candy coating, and stuffed the candy, filled with happiness and sweetness, into Elsa's mouth.
The sweet taste melted in her mouth, and Elsa could no longer suppress her grief, bursting into tears.
The girl's cries shattered the heartbreaking silence of the scene.
"Why... Roy, why do we have to go through all this?"
"We try so hard to live, so why..."
The girl spoke haltingly, her voice choked with sobs as she asked the question that had been hidden deep within her heart for so long.
The blue-eyed boy pursed his lips, looking at little Jorde, who was also silently weeping beside him.
Instead of answering Elsa's question, he walked up to Jord, patted his head, and put the remaining candy into his mouth.
"I don't know either"
"But at least we tried!"
After a long pause, Roy, with his rough golden hair, emerald green eyes, and striking features resembling those of a Rune, gave his answer.
His answer was also filled with confusion and bewilderment, but his tone did not contain the lifeless numbness and despair.
Blue-eyed boys are always like that, with an unyielding enthusiasm and determination in everything they do.
His firm words seemed to possess some kind of magic, causing Elsa to purse her lips tightly, as if she had found a new source of support.
The sensitive girl kept touching the broken pearls that were flowing out, and the sweet candy in her mouth gave her the confidence and courage to face everything.
Although they are now penniless again, at least they still have each other to rely on.
They are companions who help each other to survive, and also family members who support each other and fill each other's hearts.
Elsa gradually stopped crying, wiped away the last tear, and came to Jorde's side.
Seeing her younger brother's red and swollen eyes, the girl remained silent. She imitated the actions of her mother, who had died many years ago, and gently stroked Jord's little head.
Gradually, the youngest boy also calmed down, as if he felt the warmth of being with his family.
"We need to clear out the rubble while there's still firelight; there might be something left among those things."
After a while, the thoughtful girl finally calmed down. She spoke in a hoarse voice, like a housekeeper, outlining the things to be done next.
"Um!"
Her words resonated with the two boys, and although the three of them were still feeling very down, a spark of hope had been rekindled in their hearts.
Suffering is only temporary, fate is still long, and life is always like this, tenacious and resilient.
"Sorry Ron, we've run into this mess. We might have to camp out in the wilderness tonight."
The blue-eyed boy gave a wry smile and pointed to the dilapidated ruins in the distance to his friend whom he had just met that day.
"It's alright. Without your help, I would probably have been arrested as a spy today."
Ron didn't care at all. He took off his monocle, wiped the bright, clean lens with his sleeve, and put it back on.
"I'll come with you!"
The blond boy smiled, making Roy Moore blush slightly.
Thanks to the efforts of the four, the ruins at the scene were quickly searched out, proving that the idea of being lucky amidst hardship is pure nonsense.
Because they found nothing of value, and everything was destroyed by the abnormally powerful shells, a heavy gloom hung over Roy and his companions, extinguishing all hope.
The Crimson Night hung silently in the sky. The terrifying rumbling sounds had long since ceased, and the airship fleet in the sky had moved far away without lingering, as if the attack had been entirely impromptu.
A bright, warm campfire illuminated the makeshift shelter made of wooden planks, which was small enough to barely accommodate two people to rest inside.
The crackling sparks added a unique charm to this extraordinary night, while Roy and Ron sat by the fire, each fiddling with something in their hands.
"Roy, are you tired?"
The blond boy suddenly spoke, breaking the long silence.
"tired."
Roy answered the blond boy's question with a completely flat tone.
"Roy, are you suffering?"
The blond boy asked again, giving Roy no time to organize his thoughts.
"bitter."
Roy answered Ron's question in the same flat tone as before.
"Then why?"
Before the blond boy could finish his question, Roy across from him chuckled twice and put down what he was fiddling with.
"Ron, are you asking me why I still try so hard to live when life is so hard and tiring?"
Ron was somewhat taken aback. He adjusted his monocle and then nodded silently.
"That's a good question. Sometimes I ask myself that same question."
"Roy, since you're already so unfortunate, why are you so stubbornly clinging to life? Wouldn't dying be an easier thing to do?"
"Your father abandoned you, your mother left you, and you face discrimination on this continent, living a life of hunger and hardship. It would be easier to die than to live like this."
For the first time, the blue-eyed boy revealed his vulnerable side. Perhaps the events of the day had hit him hard, causing him to confide in Ron.
"Then why?"
The blond boy pushed up his monocle and asked curiously.
"Ha, at first it was to keep a promise I made to my mother, but later it wasn't."
"Later, I longed for my father, whom I hadn't seen in a long time, to come and take me back to the Kingdom of Rune, but I knew it was just a lie told by a liar."
"And then..."
At this point, Roy's expression faltered for a moment, as if he were recalling something interesting.
"Later, I met Elsa and the others, and I discovered that they, like me, were all tragic jokes of fate's prejudice."
"I think the three of us have had similar experiences that allowed us to survive here."
"As for now, I live for my companions and family, and I think they do too."
As he spoke, Roy smiled slightly and looked at Elsa and Yord, who were already fast asleep.
"It's that simple!?"
"Yes, it's that simple!"
The blue-eyed boy nodded, answering Ron's question firmly.
