Chapters 128 and 130: The Ghost Doctor (4k)
The hospital was quiet at night. The fluorescent lights overhead shone on the clean floor tiles, reflecting a cool, dim light. As always, it was quiet. This scene made Nurse Asano in the duty room wrap her clothes tighter.
It wasn't just because the hospital had an eerie atmosphere at night, but also because her companion was vividly recounting the paranormal events that had occurred in the morgue that morning.
The night shift was so boring. The two of them were playing on their phones, but someone started chatting, and somehow the topic turned to urban legends.
"The bodies in the morgue came out of the isolation wards and wandered around. A group that steals corneas had their eyes on the bodies in our hospital, and they sneaked in, only to find out what they were looking at..."
"Let's not talk about this late at night!"
The more senior nurse, Asano, gave the intern next to her a reproachful look. She knew that the intern at her relative's house liked these strange and supernatural things, but it was really inappropriate to bring this up so late at night.
Regarding the accident at the morgue, although the chief physician had issued a gag order, Nurse Asano had heard some rumors.
This wasn't just a baseless rumor; the mix of truth and fiction actually added to its realism. Since it happened in her own hospital, she felt a sense of identification, which made Nurse Asano a little uneasy.
"Okay, I won't say anymore." The intern nurse shut her mouth listlessly, but she quickly became excited again, picked up her phone and placed it in front of Nurse Asano.
"Asano-nee, come and see this video of Buddha's miracle."
Nurse Asano looked at the six- or seven-story-tall Myō-ō statue in the video and showed a slight interest:
"The special effects are so realistic, is this a trailer for some movie?"
"This isn't a movie trailer; this is a genuine recording of Buddha's miracle that occurred in Daejeon!"
"How is that possible? Such a large Buddha statue would definitely be on TV if it appeared in Ota Ward. How come I've never heard of it before?" Nurse Asano chuckled.
"That's because the government is deceiving us; they've used their power to cover up the truth!" The intern nurse said solemnly, clenching her fist and swinging it forcefully.
"But the citizens have the right to know the truth. My previous forum was shut down because of this, but it's not over yet. We've moved the videos and pictures to the dark web. We must wake up more people!"
Nurse Asano was a little worried. This relative's child was too noisy. Should she talk to her aunt when she had the chance?
The entire hospital building has a U-shaped structure, and the nurses' duty station is located in the recessed area. Two nurses work in a group, one on each side, so they can keep track of the situation on both sides of the ward at any time.
"It's Dr. Satomi. Isn't he the doctor on duty today? Why is he taking care of patients so late? He's really responsible."
The intern nurse saw the doctor coming up the stairs and stopping at the ward door, and whispered something.
"It's because of Ms. Ebina from room 1301, isn't it? She's being transferred to another hospital tomorrow," Nurse Asano said casually, flipping through the registration form.
"Ms. Ebina, is it late-stage cancer? It's so pitiful to transfer her to another hospital at this time."
The young intern nurse felt a deep sense of sympathy for the girl, who was about the same age as her but whose days were numbered.
"Ugh."
Nurse Asano sighed as well, without saying anything more.
Having worked in a hospital for a long time, witnessing countless partings and reunions, her emotions naturally became somewhat detached. It wasn't that she was inherently cold-hearted, but rather that she had seen far too many tragedies firsthand. After repeated exposure, her threshold for sadness was naturally much higher than that of the average person.
It may seem heartless to ask a terminally ill-fated cancer patient to leave, but she was just a nurse and there was really nothing she could do.
Nurse Asano remembered that the medical university hospital wasn't like this before, but after Professor Kurokawa's unexpected death, Professor Noriuchi became the head of the medical university and began to implement this policy.
Persuading terminally ill patients to leave the hospital did indeed improve the hospital's operating performance, and the cure rate and mortality rate on paper looked much better.
However, not all late-stage cancer patients are discouraged from seeking treatment. Those with money and influence can still prolong their lives for a while with the help of the expert team at the affiliated hospital of the medical university.
Time passed second by second, and the hands of the wall clock reached midnight.
With a soft tick, the time reached midnight.
"Crackling and popping."
The fluorescent lights at the nurses' station and in the corridor suddenly made a strange noise, and then flickered on and off.
"What's going on? Is the power going to trip?"
"Don't say things like that. That's the kind of thing we hate to hear in the duty room!"
Nurse Asano glared at the intern nurse. This kind of thing happens all over the world. As soon as someone on duty says that nothing has happened today, an accident will immediately occur.
Before the words were even finished, the lights in the nurses' station and the corridor went out at the same time, plunging everything into darkness.
"The power really tripped! What a hassle!"
Nurse Asano quickly turned on her phone's flashlight and shone it around. She wasn't too panicked, since the hospital's electrical system had backup power in case of emergency. Although the power outage was sudden, it wouldn't cause any major crisis.
The hospital has electricians on standby 24 hours a day. Once a power outage occurs, the electricians will be able to detect it immediately and rush to repair it.
However, according to regulations, after a power outage, the on-duty nurses must patrol each ward to ensure that the ventilators and electrocardiogram monitoring equipment are functioning properly.
Nurse Asano led the intern nurse out of the duty station, greeted Dr. Satomi, and prepared to start her rounds from room 1301, opposite which was the elevator door.
"Clang—"
There are four elevators in the elevator room. The sign outside the second elevator in the middle started flashing, and the sound of a traction machine turning could be heard, indicating that an elevator was moving from downstairs to this location.
"Wait, didn't the power trip? Why is this surgical elevator still coming up? And it's already midnight, shouldn't surgical elevators be locked?"
This hospital building has four elevators: one that stops on a single floor, one that stops on two floors, and one that stops on all floors. The one currently in operation is the operating room elevator, which is not allowed to be used by patients and their families. It is only used by hospital staff in case of emergencies or other sudden situations.
Nurse Asano sensed that something was amiss.
Moreover, as far as she knew, the power supply to the four elevators was connected, and normally, either all four would lose power at the same time or all four would be in normal use.
Currently, the signs for the other three elevators are dark red, indicating that they are malfunctioning. Only the sign for the operating room elevator is functioning normally, with the green floor numbers constantly changing.
Seventh floor...
Nurse Asano stared blankly at the sign, feeling her mouth getting dry.
Ten, eleven, twelve...
The final number was thirteen!
With a loud bang, the elevator doors suddenly opened, and the light coming from inside illuminated the entire dark corridor.
A refined middle-aged man stepped out of the elevator. He was wearing a doctor's white coat, a suit jacket underneath, and shiny black leather shoes.
The middle-aged man was quite handsome, with a nice mustache, but his face was as white as a corpse and expressionless.
When Nurse Asano saw the refined man's face, she felt a chill run down her spine, because she recognized him.
But she couldn't believe that someone who had already died had reappeared in the hospital!
"Kuro... Kurokawa-sensei!"
All I heard was Dr. Satomi beside me calling out that name with an excited and incredulous expression.
Is it really Professor Kurokawa?!
Upon hearing this, Nurse Asano's legs went weak and she collapsed to the ground.
The intern nurse quickly helped her up, barely managing to support her.
"Asano-nee, why are you so scared? Who exactly is this gloomy, handsome doctor?" the intern nurse asked curiously.
Nurse Asano's mouth trembled as if she wanted to say something, but her teeth chattered uncontrollably, and she couldn't utter a single word.
It's understandable that the intern nurses, being new, wouldn't recognize him, but how could those who have worked at the affiliated hospital of the medical university for many years not recognize the famous Professor Kurokawa!
Professor Kurokawa had passed away in a car accident a year ago. At that time, all the staff of the hospital's oncology department attended Professor Kurokawa's farewell ceremony, and Nurse Asano even paid her respects to Professor Kurokawa's remains.
The indescribable fear of a dead person suddenly coming back to life gripped Nurse Asano's heart.
"Professor Kurokawa! Teacher Kurokawa! I miss you so much..." Dr. Satomi choked up.
Dr. Satomi was initially shocked. As a doctor, he didn't believe in supernatural things, but in his most vulnerable and confused state, seeing his mentor again brought tears to his eyes, and he even forgot his fear for a moment.
"Teacher, is there anything you're still worried about? Is there something important you need to tell me after you've come back at this time? I'll definitely take care of it for you!"
Dr. Satomi wiped his eyes and said.
Professor Kurokawa's face was deathly pale, and his entire body exuded a terrifying and sinister aura, like a walking corpse that had crawled out of the morgue. However, Dr. Satomi had seen many corpses and had acted openly and honestly with a clear conscience, so he bravely stepped forward.
But the closer he got to Professor Kurokawa, the more he felt the bone-chilling cold, and Dr. Satomi involuntarily stopped in his tracks.
Dr. Satomi raised his head slightly and met Kurokawa-sensei's gaze.
Professor Kurokawa's face was as familiar as ever, and his signature mustache was still meticulously groomed, but a strange change had occurred.
His eyes were pure white, without even pupils, and his cheeks were covered with bulging blue veins, making him look extremely ferocious and terrifying.
"Kurokawa...sensei..."
Dr. Satomi then realized that he was no longer facing his highly respected mentor, but a visitor from another world. Who knew if his mentor was still as gentle and refined after death as he was in life?
Fear is the oldest and strongest human emotion. The instinctive fear of foreign objects suppressed Dr. Satomi's admiration for Professor Kurokawa.
Where is the patient?
Professor Kurokawa asked in a deep voice.
Hearing that familiar, deep voice, most of the fear that had filled him was dispelled, and tears welled up in Dr. Satomi's eyes again.
Even after his death, Professor Kurokawa never forgot his duty. The first thing he said when he returned to the world of the living from the Sanzu River was to ask where the patient was!
No mistake, Professor Kurokawa is still the same dedicated and compassionate doctor.
"Teacher, I have a patient now, Ms. Ebina, who has late-stage stomach cancer. I would like to consult you..."
"Prepare for surgery!"
Professor Kurokawa said coldly, then he stepped directly past Dr. Satomi and walked to room 1301 as if he had a premonition, opening the door.
"Surgery? There's a power outage right now. We don't have a medical team or an operating room. How can we perform surgery?"
Dr. Satomi gritted his teeth and followed her; he had to take responsibility for Ms. Ebina.
Meanwhile, the intern nurse in the corridor, supporting Nurse Asano, was completely bewildered, having no idea what was going on.
Looking down at Nurse Asano, I saw that her face was deathly pale and her whole body was trembling with extreme fear.
"What exactly is going on?"
The electrical system in the ward had activated its power storage function, and the main light in the bedside room was off, but several nightlights were still on, casting a dim light on Ms. Ebina's face.
Ms. Ebina was still awake. She lay in her hospital bed, her eyes slightly red and swollen, and she was making soft sobbing sounds.
Upon noticing someone enter, Ms. Ebina quickly wiped her eyes and hid the pillowcase, still stained with tears, under the covers.
When Ms. Ebina first saw a pale-faced, expressionless stranger enter, she was startled, but then she saw Dr. Satomi follow him in and felt a little relieved.
"Dr. Satomi, who is this doctor? What brings you here so late?" Ms. Ebina asked with a forced smile, her voice still hoarse.
Dr. Satomi was at a loss for words; he couldn't very well introduce it as the ghost of his mentor.
"The patient's condition is critical; surgery is urgently needed!"
Professor Kurokawa glanced at Miss Ebina and walked straight toward the hospital bed.
"Dr. Satomi, what exactly is going on?"
At this point, Ms. Ebina had no choice but to seek help from Dr. Satomi, whom she knew.
Professor Kurokawa pointed a finger at Ms. Ebina, and Ms. Ebina's eyes rolled back, and she collapsed limply onto the hospital bed.
Professor Kurokawa approached the bedside, his eerie and cold white eyes fixed intently on Ms. Ebina's stomach.
He laid Miss Ebina face up, then took off her blue and white hospital gown, revealing her delicate skin.
"Teacher, what are you doing?"
Dr. Satomi felt that performing surgery in this way was far too frivolous and couldn't help but step forward to stop him.
However, when Professor Kurokawa swept his eyes over them with those ghostly white eyes, they were so frightened that they couldn't move, just like a frog being stared at by a poisonous snake.
Professor Kurokawa raised his right hand expressionlessly. His right hand flashed blue light in the dimly lit ward, and then he suddenly plunged it downwards, plunging it into Ms. Ebina's abdomen, causing blood to splatter everywhere!
"Begin the surgery."
