Chapter 1: Wife Dies at the Start?
Zhang San followed the group of foreigners to a funeral in a daze. He was familiar with the people there, not just with him, but with the owner of his body. This unfamiliar body contained a soul from a different time and space.
"Stephen, don't be sad. Your sister passed away peacefully. Our whole family is grateful to you."
The lean, handsome man in front of me—yes, that's the original owner's brother-in-law, Alan Smith.
Zhang San could only nod expressionlessly. He didn't know what to say, afraid that he would give himself away if he spoke. He had just traveled from March 2, 2024 last night, and was still in a daze.
As a top-tier working professional embodying the "Five Stresses, Four Beauties, and Three Loves," Zhang San is an Android system developer who seamlessly switches between 996 and 007 work schedules. At thirty, he's under immense pressure. No house, no car—that's fine. He's had several relationships, only to realize he's someone else's fish in someone else's pond, haha…
When he was called out of his room, he realized that he was in a foreign land. Having never been abroad, he was quite shocked by the foreigners with all sorts of hair, deep-set eyes, and high noses.
Then he suddenly ran into the room, and his actions left the people outside stunned for a long time; they looked at each other, not understanding what this relative was doing.
"He's probably too sad. He and Linda were deeply in love," Allen explained to his family and friends.
Zhang San ran into the room and searched everywhere for a mirror. He finally found one in the bathroom, and thankfully, he still had a Chinese face. He then tidied himself up before coming out.
People outside came up to him one by one to hug him and say comforting words. He wondered if they had misunderstood something. After getting in the car, they went to a church. After the ceremony, those people also expressed their comfort to him.
Allen took him home and then said to him, "Stephen, get some rest. Your sister wouldn't want to see you like this. She asked me to apologize to you before she left. She shouldn't have hidden her illness from you."
Zhang San walked blankly into the small villa and began to examine it. Inside were photos of him and... well, Linda. This place was both familiar and unfamiliar to him. As he became more and more familiar with the environment, Zhang San found that more and more memories flooded his mind.
"Heh...so it turns out I'm like a kept man!"
Six months ago, Zhang San was studying at a relatively unknown university in Beijing. As an orphan, getting into university was no small feat for him. Before graduation, he heard that working as a tour guide at the Forbidden City could earn him foreign exchange—a real lucrative job where some people could earn a year's wages in a single day. He went for the job, but he was too shy. Only Linda saw his pitiful state and, perhaps out of sympathy or shared his plight, found him a job as a tour guide.
Linda met Zhang San, a tourist, and she took a liking to him. He was a bit shy and introverted but worked hard to earn money. During the time Zhang San was her tour guide, the two developed feelings for each other.
The main reason was that Linda fell in love with Zhang San. As the saying goes, it's easy for a woman to pursue a man, and Zhang San thus completed a transnational marriage. Later, he learned from his brother-in-law that Linda wanted to change Zhang San's life. She believed that Zhang San was living on the other side of the ocean, in a very backward place, and she wanted to give him a better life.
Zhang San was an orphan, which made him very pitiful, and he was also very hardworking; perhaps Linda's maternal instincts were overflowing, which led her from pity to love.
Their relationship progressed very smoothly, and at Linda's suggestion, they quickly decided to get married. Although they came from different countries and had different cultural backgrounds, they married very quickly, almost unbelievably so, and Zhang San immigrated to the United States.
The new Zhang San already knows that Linda's family did not oppose their marriage. Linda has a terminal illness. When she went to mainland China, she saw a movie that made her curious about the East and thought it was very mysterious.
Sometimes, fate is predetermined, and there's a reason for that. This encounter changed the course of their lives. Recalling the past, Zhang San felt a little dizzy and then fell asleep.
The next day, Zhang San was awakened by a loud noise. Upon waking, he suddenly remembered that he was in America and felt that something was wrong. Thinking it was a thief, he immediately grabbed a stick and rushed out. Then he saw his brother-in-law and... two policemen.
"Oh, Stephen, I thought you might want to follow in your sister's footsteps."
After seeing the police off, Allen complained a bit; while Zhang San, upon learning the truth, was both amused and exasperated. The two of them were currently repairing the door...
"Allen, thank you for your concern, but I'm actually fine." Zhang San still looked haggard from yesterday, but he was also a little angry, which made Allen, who was fixing the door with him, very happy.
"Stephen, you must live on for your sister, otherwise she won't be happy in heaven."
Zhang San didn't say anything, just nodded, and continued repairing the door. The two worked together very well and quickly fixed the door. Then they painted it so that the cracks were no longer visible, and then reinstalled the door.
Alan asked a very serious question: "Stephen, are you going to stay in this small town forever?"
Zhang San thought for a moment and then asked, "What are your thoughts?"
"I've had enough of this place. I want to go to Los Angeles and try my luck there. I don't see a good future for you here. You can come with me to Los Angeles, Hollywood, you know Hollywood! You can't let your sister's departure hold you back."
This guy didn't seem sad about his sister's death. If Zhang San didn't know that Allen was Linda's younger brother, he would have felt that this guy had some other purpose. However, what happened next made Zhang San look at this guy in a different light.
"My sister has been in poor health since she was a child. Later, she was diagnosed with leukemia, which made her live in pain. Your presence made her able to happily pass away. We are very gratified."
"Don't feel guilty."
"Hmm, I think I'll be able to get over this soon." Zhang San thought for a moment and said, "Then let's go to Los Angeles. Maybe your dream will come true there."
"Ah, Stephen, that's great! With you by my side, my parents won't worry so much about me. Hollywood beauties, I, Uncle Allen, am coming! Haha..."
Looking at the somewhat excited Allen in front of him, Zhang San didn't know what to say. In fact, he didn't know if going to Los Angeles with this guy was the right thing to do, and he didn't even know where he was right now.
However, it's better than staying in this place; going to another place is a very wise decision.
