Chapter 17 The Popular NTOS and Making Money
Major software companies were the first to receive the internal version of the NTOS system software. They immediately conducted internal testing and found that the software was very easy to use and much better than the original MSOS.
Not only did the professional software engineers feel good about it, but those who got the free trial version also received high praise.
This time, NTOS became famous worldwide, and those companies that had conflicts with Microsoft jumped out to highly praise NTOS while vehemently criticizing Microsoft.
MS's stock price has fallen from a high of $0.7 to $0.3, and it's still falling, heading towards $0.2 per share.
"Ha, Stephen, we've struck it rich!"
Lawrence's smile was barely concealed; he looked like he was about to jump up. Zhang San had already pushed him away twice; he didn't like hugging, sticking to, or lifting a grown man up.
They've already made two waves of money. Before other investment banks could even react, they had already made their profits from the price surge and then started shorting. Through this process of pushing up and down, they've achieved financial freedom.
"Calm down, Lawrence. I feel we should close our positions. Otherwise, it wouldn't be good if MS Company reacted and suspended trading."
"Yes, yes, close the position immediately."
On Zhang San's advice, Lawrence took advantage of the sharp drop to start buying MS Company's stock. He sold some shares to drive down the price while buying them back, causing MS Company's stock price to plummet to $0.23.
After three days of effort, they finally closed out their short positions at a cost of $200 million. MS's market capitalization had fallen from a high of $5.2 billion to $1.3 billion, and the stock price was close to $0.18 per share, which can be said to have hit rock bottom.
MS may have succumbed to the pressure and announced a trading halt, claiming that there was a major event.
What is the MS company's board of directors doing? They are looking for certain individuals to buy their NTOS licenses. With these licenses, they can stabilize the stock price.
Allen has already reached agreements with major manufacturers to sell them copies. A copy costs only $38 for the standard version, while the professional version is sold to the public for $88. This price is much cheaper than that of MS.
At the same time, major manufacturers also obtained another license, which is NTOFFICE, but this is much more expensive, costing $88. It can be customized and can use the other company's name for the OFFICE, such as HP-OFFICE.
This is very appealing; they decided to completely abandon MS because the other was too outdated.
The board members of MS Company are now dejected. They haven't received any news from the other party and have been searching for a long time, as if they have disappeared. In fact, they are all in Hong Kong to prevent the other party from finding these people and getting a breakthrough from them to buy an NTOS license, which would make the stock price rise.
But instead of what they expected, they received another message: Allen Software had reached an agreement with other computer manufacturers at a very low price, and they had also made a commitment to continue using the current bundled price as a percentage of the retail price. Of course, there was no secret agreement, and there was no verbal recording to prove it.
"Why are two directors missing today?"
Despite their anger, the meeting had to continue. However, the CEO noticed that two board members were missing. These two were representatives from two mid-sized investment banks on Wall Street. Their absence meant what? They had sold all their shares.
"They've already sold all their shares, that's it."
A director standing nearby shrugged, expressing his helplessness; since that was the case, the CEO could only say, "Then let's investigate their patent and see if there are any loopholes that we can exploit later."
This idea of self-rescue piqued the interest of the remaining board members.
"Good, let's examine these patents and see what loopholes they have."
His words were met with a response from the crowd, and then they began to pick up the thick NT Corporation patent documents about NTOS. Half an hour later, someone started to curse, the content of which had a strong sense of back-and-forth movement and expressed a kind of worship.
One person speaks up, and others follow suit. What is this thing? All sorts of patents completely shut down any loopholes they could exploit.
"Can anyone tell me, is it really necessary for FedEx to apply for a patent for this design?"
Others share the same thought, but they don't know how to express it.
"Stop looking, it's useless. If we dare to copy it, we will definitely lose the lawsuit, and... there's no time to lose, our stock price is about to hit rock bottom."
"Our MSOS is the best..."
No one spoke. MSOS used to be the best, but now it's not good anymore. It's too damn hard to use. They all feel it's not easy to use, and it's not as convenient as the WYSIWYG interface of the other party.
While they were still discussing this patent issue, another piece of news made them very upset.
The NTOS development company and INT Corporation reached an agreement to become strategic partners and cooperate on the stability of software and hardware.
Upon receiving the news, an angry roar erupted from the MS company's board of directors.
"This is betrayal, thank you with a generous gift~ Wang Defa~"
They were initially somewhat relieved that their ally, the chip giant INT, had not yet partnered with them, and that they still had a chance. But now they discovered that it was all a lie; they had lost their ally, and that the other party had betrayed them.
This made them very upset. They might not have cared about being abandoned by the major PC manufacturers, since as long as the CPU manufacturers were still on their side, those major manufacturers would eventually come back. However, INT's departure meant that they were now completely abandoned by everyone.
This was truly a sad story. Silence had fallen over the meeting room when someone uttered a sentence that brightened everyone's eyes.
"Let's resume trading and stop suspending it. Let's sell our shares and recover as much of our losses as possible."
The proposal was approved by all of them, except for the one in the middle who reluctantly approved it.
It wasn't that he didn't want to, but that he couldn't. He wanted to get out of this quagmire; he wanted to get ashore.
