Reborn in America, I'm serious about making money.

Chapter 3 She should give you a red envelope

The two were hired smoothly, earning $4.5 an hour and two days off a week. Blockbuster's job was troublesome; every day they had to register customers who borrowed and returned videotapes, or buy videotapes.

Videotapes are expensive these days, ranging from over sixty dollars to nearly one hundred dollars for new releases; this explains why Blockbuster can open so many rental chains, as renting such expensive films is more cost-effective.

Zhang San and Allen are still living in the store's warehouse. The store manager tells them to find a place to live as soon as possible. In addition to the store manager, there is a 24-year-old woman named Jessica who exudes the charm of a mature woman. However, she became interested in Allen on the first day they met.

When Jessica heard that the two were still looking for a place to live, she said, "Why don't you move in with me and share? My place is very big."

Upon hearing this, Allen immediately looked at Zhang San, who, in turn, said, "I'll come visit you on Saturday."

So, on Saturday, Zhang San and Allen went to an old-fashioned building nearby. Downstairs sat a fat, white man. He was probably too fat, but he looked very friendly.

What Zhang San didn't know was that he had seen too many fat people, and he really didn't know why there were so many fat people.

"Hey Jessica, you found two... um, and some Asians too, do you think they can satisfy you? Or I can come to you tonight, don't let my weight fool you, I'm really good."

"Get out of here, Sangeese." After saying that, she led the two upstairs. She lived on the third floor, which was also the top floor. After entering, Zhang San found that there was only one living room and two bedrooms.

"Um, is someone going to sleep in the living room?"

"No," she said to Allen, "Allen, do you want to come with me?"

Damn it! Zhang San felt this woman was too direct. He looked at Allen and saw that the other looked eager to try, so he gave up on saying anything and decided to leave it to him. Zhang San felt that he might have used up all his luck with women because of his past life.

"Alan, if you want to share a room with me, then you'll only have to pay half the rent, which is one hundred and fifty dollars." Seeing that Alan didn't answer, she continued, "If someone sleeps in the living room, then it'll be one hundred dollars each for you."

"Of course, why not?"

Allen immediately agreed. In Zhang San's opinion, youth is great, and energy is abundant.

"Then it's settled."

And so, the three of them began their strange cohabitation... no, their shared living arrangement. But for Zhang San, it wasn't a good night. He was awakened by a scream, and he almost cursed. It was Jessica, that woman. When the two of them were having sex, it was like slaughtering a pig.

On the second morning of their shared apartment, Zhang San noticed that Allen seemed a little unsteady on his feet, as the soundproofing in the apartment was very poor.

"Allen, you two should keep it down tonight," Zhang San complained, then said mysteriously, "Allen, I think Jessica should give you a red envelope."

His strange remarks prompted Allen to ask, somewhat puzzled, "Why?"

"Oh, let's talk about that later."

He couldn't very well tell him that on the other side of the ocean, technicians were given red envelopes (cash gifts) for eating young chicken; otherwise, the person inside might kick him out.

Why didn't Zhang San spend the $35,000 to rent a better place? Because in this unfamiliar place, having money gives one a sense of security.

Everything was peaceful. In the following days, Zhang San was familiarizing himself with his surroundings. As a transmigrator who had been reborn, working as a waiter in this Blockbuster store made him feel ashamed of his transmigrated status.

It's another weekend, and this apartment is completely lacking in amenities—no TV, no VCR, practically nothing.

"Hi Jessica, what do you do on weekends?"

Zhang San asked his question. What he really wanted to ask was, "Don't you watch TV or anything?"

"No, I usually stay home reading novels or going to the movies. Stephen, can you still cook your 'Chinese food'?"

"Of course, as long as we split the bill, everything is negotiable."

"You greedy bastard, I've already bought the groceries and put them in the fridge."

Allen also wanted to eat Zhang San's cooking, but he didn't say anything and just waited to eat.

After lunch, Zhang San wanted to find something to do; he couldn't just stay idle like this any longer. As he went out, he saw the person across the hall carrying something back home.

"Hey Stephen, can you do me a favor?" John asked Zhang San. "I have a lot of stuff."

This is the college graduate who lives across the hall. He just graduated from school this year and works in sales at a company. I heard he's quite capable.

He saw a lot of large items inside: computers, televisions, printers, and other things too—a lot…

"Hey buddy, where did you get all this stuff?"

"There's a junkyard where I found this," John continued, somewhat complaining. "My student loans are too high, so I have to live frugally to pay them off as soon as possible."

Zhang San was a little confused by his words. Weren't loans tax-deductible? But that wasn't his concern, so he asked, "Wow, there's such a place? Can you tell me where it is?"

Perhaps Zhang San helped him move his things and gained his favor, so he gave him the address. But that place was easy to find.

He returned to the room and saw that Alan and Jessica were already inseparable.

"Allen, don't you think something's missing here?"

Looking at the empty living room, there was only a sofa and no coffee table; in the bedroom, there was only a bed and nothing else, but there was a refrigerator and cooking utensils in the kitchen.

That refrigerator was Jessica's only possession, along with the kitchenware.

"But those are very expensive."

"John from across the street told me there was an appliance storage area nearby, and we should go try our luck."

Jessica perked up and said, "I know that place, and I can borrow a pickup truck."

And so, the three of them hit it off immediately, each taking on a task, and set off for the appliance storage site. Why was there an appliance storage site there? Naturally, it was because it was a remote place, far from the city center; otherwise, the three of them wouldn't be living in such a miserable place.

This place is truly an appliance graveyard; you can find anything here. The three of them, like scavengers, began searching around. Zhang San spotted an old television, though he didn't know what brand it was. He started examining it, only to find it was too small and unsure of its condition, and there were no testers available.

However, he was delighted to see several computers and started disassembling them on the spot, as he was quite knowledgeable about them.

For example, there is a gold version of the Intel 4004, which is plated with gold. If you have one here, you can remove it.

He discovered that the computers had the same configuration, so he called Allen over and they moved the computer towers to the truck. Then he looked at the monitors, picked out a decent one, and put it on the pickup truck as well.

"Hey everyone, look what I found!"

Following the sound, they saw Jessica standing next to a large object. The two of them rushed over. It was a color TV from last year, but the casing was broken. Everything else looked fine, and some of the wires were missing, as they had been chewed up by something.

He cut a wire from the side, and he and Allen carried the color TV into the car.
